So a few of the wedding venues that we are looking at (mostly historic mansions) do not allow red wine. Apparently this is a common thing. Was this a deal breaker for anyone? and what did you guys use as a substitute? Personally, its not a deal breaker for me because I am not big on alcohol but my FI says red wine and dinner is a staple for his family. Suggestions?

I’ve never heard of this, but then I live in Australia where party = alcohol everywhere you go. What is their reason? It would be a deal breaker for me, there would be too many people disappointed that white wine was their only alcoholic option and I want my guests to have a really good time and feel looked after. I wouldn’t have a dinner at my home without having red wine on offer, so it would be the same at my wedding.

Yup, we can’t have red wine at our venue either, oddly enough we’re in MD and our venue is a historic mansion. We haven’t considered a substitute drink yet. One of the people working at the venue said sometimes people have red wine anyway and forefit the security deposit though. good luck!

We’re in the same situation. We’re just offering everything but that (and any red drinks, like cosmos), and figuring that people will just pick something else to drink. We’re also offering a few types of white wine to compensate.
Our venue doesn’t actually allow any kind of red sauce, so if you want Italian food, you might look elsewhere!

the reason they give is that red wine stains. period. 🙁

Some places will let you do red wine if it is served at a table, but not let you get it from the bar. If they allow cranberry juice at the bar, it might be worth pushing if it’s that big of a deal to your fiance. Otherwise, just serve white wine, beer, champagne, etc.

If my venue had this "no red wine" rule, it would have saved me the expense of having to re-print the photo we had matted and used as a guest book (everyone signed the matting). One of our guests spilled red wine on the photo and we had to replace it. I guess it’s just a good thing it didn’t get on the matting that everyone had signed.
