First, the story of how it didn’t happen.
Our first date was at a zoo. So, since I had a 4-day weekend from work he took off some time so we could have a long weekend together. The original plan was to go to DC, but since the government had shut down we decided on a “staycation” that included a trip to the zoo where we had our first date. Our mutual best friend lives in the same city as the zoo, so we packed up our puppies and made a full day of it.
The zoo was lovely. It was a cool overcast day so the animals were quite active. My boyfriend and I were taking a break on some bleachers overlooking an American prairie exhibit. We were happy and just a little tired and we shared a really peaceful moment overlooking this rolling vista. He had been carrying the ring around and decided it was a great moment, but as he was about to speak up a pair of bison started . . . ah . . . fornicating. He decided it was not, afterall, a romantic moment. Haha!
Our friend convinced us to stay the night (I suspect she just wanted more time with the puppies) and after a delicious breakfast we loaded up our car and prepared to leave. It was a cool damp morning so we let the car run a while to warm up while we laughed at the pups’ attempts to get their beds arranged juuuuusst right in the crates.
We’ve discussed marriage for years, so when he asked me,
“Would you really like to get married?” My response was
“Of course. . . “
I know I was about to elaborate on that statement, but that is when he pulled a ring out of his pocket. He said something, but neither of us can remember what it was. Even low key proposals go by in a blur!
Needless to say, I said “yes.” And, I am proud to report that I only cried a little. I was always a little uncomfortable with the whole “going down on the knee tradition.” I had always planned to help him to his feet before I responded to his proposal. I mean, we’re a TEAM. But in the end we were sitting next to each other, holding hands, and facing in the same direction. Exactly how it should be.
I had no idea he even had a ring, so I was totally surprised. We are still in the process of sharing the news with loved ones. But, I knew all of you ladies (and gents) would want the details!
