My fiance and I are really hoping to avoid a DJ that doesn’t rely on Jersey fist-pumping, light machines, and Meatloaf to make an impact. Anyone have any recommendations for a DJ that’s actually thoughtful about music choice and played songs everyone loved, but didn’t do cliches? (I could really do without hearing Shout or Living on a Prayer at my wedding.)
And, go! 🙂

Unfortunately I have nothing helpful to add but I commiserate because damn, have I seen some painful wedding DJs in the NY Metro area. Good luck to you!

MrsBuesleBee: Right?? Can’t believe this super-cheesy, over-the-top nonsense is something people still want and expect.

magazinegirl37: my DJ was awesome- he has hoted tons of KTU and z100 parties.
The one thing people loved about our wedding was our DJ. Our dance floor was packed the entire night. He played music within our taste. He will sit down with you and speak with you about the kind of music you want to played. He has a “no-cheesy” music policy (no YMCA, or electric side type stuff) LoL He was awesome.
Trio DJ Productions is the name of the company
Ask for Garry, he is the owner of the company. He has an office in Brooklyn and one in Staten Island.

magazinegirl37: i was looking for the same thing, so i did a lot of research, i did notice it was more expensive for a non cheesy dj! here’s what i found:
http://beattrainproductions.com/ – this who we ended up going with. I e-mailed them with our date/location, and they sent me the list of DJs available & pricing, you can listen to clips of each DJ on their website. my wedding isn’t until next year, but so far, so good.

Who did you end up booking? I am also looking for the non-cheesy DJ variety for my wedding in June 2016.

I hate cheesy DJ’s with a passion and absolutely loved ours. His name is David Nazario at A Perfect Blend Entertainment. He met with us multiple times to get down exactly the type of wedding and music we wanted and really held the wedding together when our caterer was a total disaster.

JTD Productions have great DJs in the NY & upstate area. Not sure if that works for you, but they definitely care about playing the kind of music you want: http://www.jtdproductions.com

Omg, I completely agree! I’m from NJ and if I never have to hear Living on a Prayer, Don’t Stop Believing, or any line dances, I’ll be freaking thrilled lol. And so many of the MCs are just so corny and over the top. We don’t need running commentary all night.
I recommend Off the Chart Entertainment.
I’ve booked this DJ for my wedding, and he was the DJ and my future BIL’s wedding. Out of all of weddings my fiance and I have been to in the past two years, this is the only wedding where we enjoyed the music. They also had nothing but positive feedback about the customer service. Our course our wedding isn’t here yet but so far he has been very receptive and even said in our initial conversation that a lot of the standard, corny wedding tropes he does not do unless the bride and groom insist on it. My future SIL said that she gave him an extensive play/do not play list and he followed it to a T. I feel like his prices are reasonable.
