I've been reading the Weddingbee boards for a while now, and I always notice that girls with non-diamond rings seem to get a lot of flack from family, friends, and acquaintances about their rings being different, cheap, or weird.
Well, I knew that I loved rings with colored stones way before engagement was even a subject of discussion with my FI, and when we got serious, I knew I wanted something other than a diamond! (Well.....maybe some little ones.)
I loooovvvveee my aquamarine, and I bet all you non-diamond-ring ladies think yours are pretty fab too. Let's see 'em!
damn that is amazing! I didn't even have an engagement ring, so that is different, lol. We were super broke and he couldn't buy one, but no worries. Definitely shows I'm not a golddigger! lol
Your ring is gorgeous! I opted for a non-diamond engagement ring as well. I think engagement rings should be as unique as the couple. < alt="Non-Diamond Engagement Rings : wedding rings " / p>

You two have SUCH beautiful rings! I don't have a good picture of mine, but the center stone is a Montana sapphire, mined less than ten miles from the house we bought together. We lucked out when we bought it - based on appearances only, I decided that I liked Montana sapphires more than Yogo sapphires, without even knowing the price difference between the two. It turns out that Yogos are more rare than diamonds, and I unintentionally saved my FI a bunch of money!
I think it is the best of the best! Would not change my tanzanite for a diamond.
Your rings are all so gorgeous! I'm in the market for a non-diamond engagement ring, so I would love to know where all of your rings came from. Would you mind giving the source (the jeweler or other vendor) of your rings? Thank you!
MariCML--mine is a standard setting from the engagement ring designer Simon G, and I guess he does gemstone stuff a lot, because the jeweler didn't bat an eye at our request to swap out the diamond. If you google "Simon G gemstone ring" you should see some pictures of my ring with different gemstones in it, as well as some of his other settings.
I just looooove colored-stone rings. The pictures here are so pretty!!
Loving that aquamarine, Mine is all diamonds but if I had to choose I would have had an aquamarine in mine. But FI chose it with all diamonds so I can't fault him for that since I didn't really make it known that I wanted a colored stone
I loooooooooooove non-diamond engagement rings. When my fiancee (now husband) and I first started talking about getting married, I had NO IDEA that anyone ever did anything other than diamond. When I started reading Weddingbee, I realized lots of people did it! Had I known, I probably would have talked up a different stone, because I think they are so beautiful and unique, even though I love my diamond solitaire. Plus you can get a bigger ring with more bling (hehehe)!
Everyone's rings look and sound beautiful! I have a sapphire center stone (bad picture of it ahead!):
I love non-diamond engagment rings!! Honestly I would have killed for a big beautiful pearl ring! A girl I work with has a beautiful green stone (light green....not an emerald....amythst (sp?) maybe) surrounded by diamonds. I don't understand the flack you all get. I'm hoping to get a wedding band with tanzanite in it (I love your ring daniela). Not to knock my ring...cause it's flawless and gorgeous....but I wouldn't have been upset if it looked like any of yours!
Here's mine. One is my actual ring and the other is the one it's based on. The side stones are iolites, and they just don't take flash that well, although they are beautiful in natural light, which is why I include the pic of the other ring.
Here's mine next to a friend's that got engaged a few weeks later. Obv mine is the one on the right! It's aquamarine (I think 1.3 carat) with 10 small diamonds, and past the diamonds there's an awesome filigree design. FI picked it out "himself" (I gave him a LOT of pics to go on) but it was a custom design and I LOVE IT!! I've never gotten anything but positive comments though. And I love that it allows me to have blue details in my dress and jewelry that totally coordinate!
Mine was from Bela Dora, a big estate dealer based in Beverly Hills. They have rings online but it's best to call them.
At work so can't add as an attachment, but here's a link:

I love having a colored stone and something..big :)
Hooray for beautiful coloured stones! I wouldn't say I get flack so much as a certain amount of confusion. North Americans are so conditioned to think engagement = big fat diamond, that when they are presented with an alternative, they don't know what to think. The most common response is: "Is that your birthstone?" which makes me laugh because my birthstone is actually a diamond!
Anyway, here's my gorgeous pigeon's blood ruby ring (with diamonds). My FH had it custom-made by a jeweller in Toronto, because he couldn't find exactly what he wanted. All I had specified was a ruby and white gold ... he came up with everything else. I think he did quite well, don't you? ;-)
I never thought of aquamarine, but I did look at sapphires first because money IS definitely an issue and I wanted my ring as soon as possible. We did end up going with diamonds because I just felt like blue sapphires (which I normally love) were too dark for me and didn't match with EVERYTHING, so it wasn't something I wanted to wear everyday. If aquamarine had really crossed onto my radar, I'd probably have one right now instead of a diamond. ;) But I do looooove my ring, so no complaints! :)
So many of these colorful e-rings are sooo beautiful. Yay for thinking outside the box a bit!
Ooo that aquamarine is gorgeous! Can i post mine here? it's not my e-ring but i got it for my 21st and it's so pretty i love it. Very unique. I wear it on my left hand when mine's in for a cleaning.
I don't think it's right to get flack for being untraditional. Pshaw it's so stupid. That's family for ya, right? =]
and i love love love the halo look around centered stones. Completely enamored by it!
And I agree with ejs4y8... I really, really love diamond halos around colored stones... it's the only way I would have done it!
I'm glad there's a post about this. :)
My fiance sometimes feels self conscious about my engagement ring because it wasn't expensive and it's not big and it's just one emerald.
But I love my ring. My ring is a Claddagh ring which is an irish ring, and it was made and shipped from Dublin Ireland. You wear it facing out on your right ring finger if you're single, you wear it facing you on your right ring finger if you're taken, facing out on your left ring finger if you're engaged, then facing in on your left ring finger if you're married. The meaning of the claddagh is love, loyalty and friendship. The heart, the crown, and the hands.
I love anything Irish/Celtic, both our families ancestors are irish, and he proposed a week after St. Patricks Day and we'll be married March 20th 2010. Ever since I was a little girl I've wanted a Claddagh with a real emerald in it since it's my birthstone. And then one day I was watching Ladder 49, not all that great of a movie but Joquin's character proposed with a claddagh and from then on that's what I've wanted and that's what he did for me. YAY! lol!
Ok I'm shutting up and showing the pics now. lol!

I love all of your rings.
If my ring wasn't an heirloom I think I would have gone with a colored stone too!
I love the story behind the claddagh :) My mom, aunt, and I bought some when we were in Ireland, and it's one of my most treasured possessions.
I already said it but I looooove looking at your rings. And I love the Claddagh! My family is Irish but my husband's is Italian, so I thought it might look silly to have a VERY Italian last name and an Irish wedding ring :)
These are all such beautiful rings! Thanks for sharing! I would have LOVED a yellow sapphire engagement ring if my FI hadn't already had another ring in store for me.
Gosh, those are some beautiful rings! I never would have imagined a ruby in that type of setting but it's stunning.
I have an old big fat heirloom diamond from grandma. I'm not going to lie, it's FABULOUS!! My fiance brought it to my favorite designer and he had it reset into a very different type of setting and it's gorgeous. He had the option of adding sapphire side stones but chose diamonds and it's fantastic.
However, if we couldn't start with grandma's sparkly, the colored stones would have been the way to go.
I'm sorry that some girls catch flack about the non-diamond ring. I haven't gotten any about mine. Probably because it is mine and his birthstone and we met on his birthday so that just means sooo much more to us. Plus the ring is really way too pretty to not like it.
I also did a little research online and Princess Di had a Sapphire ring! So if it was good enough for Royalty it is good enough for any of us.
Here is my e-ring! Aquamarine Legacy. Love it so much I have to make myself take it off at night to go to bed :)
carrie.a.s.b- Your ring is amazing.
My co-worker picked out a pearl and its amazing.
Here's mine! It's a lab created green saphire thats a little over 1 carat. White gold. My wedding band is an eternity band, diamonds, 1 carat. The FI did a great job designing the ring... I love it! It's really unique that the wedding band goes in the middle of the ering!

On my hand with the wedding band
AAAHHH! Staceyrp, the Legacy is what started it all for me. I had been zeroing in on aquamarines for a while, but wasn't sure what style I really loved....then we decided to just browse in Tiffany's after brunch one day. I tried one of those suckers on, SWOONED, and said, find me something as close to this as you possibly can. Done.

Ok.. you asked where we got them... I actually looked alot for a tanzanite white gold and diamond ring online, because I live in Honduras and coloured stone rings are not too popular in here yet... I found the one I loved on overstock.com for about 180 $ (I know, such a bargain) only to find out they don´t accept international credit card payments, I was so down! but then I looked around some more and found the exact ring on amazon, where my fianceé also got his wedding band so we even saved on shipping!
Honestly, I´m glad I don´t walk around with an expensive ring, what if I lost it?
My ring came from www.divadiamonds.net.
Everyone's rings are beautiful!!
I love all these rings! I really wanted to incorporate another stone into my ring (either as the center stone or surrounding ones) but FI's family felt very strongly that "engagements were for diamonds"....oh well, guess that's what 1-year anniversaries are for! Right-hand ring, here I come :)
I have a ruby, orange garnet & diamond ring. the rubies & 1 diamond are family stones. I need to figure out how to take a picture of my ring.
carrie.a.s.b- I spent several hours online looking at rings. I knew what I wanted but never found it. Then we went to Tiffanys and I just couldn't leave the ring. But I did. Later that afternoon he went back over there and got it for me. We were on vacation in Hawaii. I didn't get the ring for 3 more weeks which was torture. LOL Your ring is very similiar so your FI did a great job.
Mine's a sapphire and I LOVE it! I've gotten many compliments on it.
I love this thread! I also have a sapphire, and the only person I caught flack from was my sister (who also doesn't understand why I don't want a wedding band chock full o' stones). When she saw it in person she was quickly converted.
It's a late-20s/early 30s setting that we found it at a local jewelry store, missing a center stone, which made it super easy to add the sapphire. If you're in DC/Baltimore, and want the name of the store, let me know!
Argh! For some reason weddingbee boards never work with my computer! My ring is here: http://mildlycrazy.wordpress.com/2009/02/28/the-bling/
OMG I love the non-diamond engagement ring. I have been engaged three times. The first time was a gorgeous emerald cut sapphire, second time a three stone diamond (2.16 carats) GORGEOUS!! and the last time I didn't make it to get the ring LMAO. Fourth times a charm... I have asked the one made for me for a gorgeous blue topaz stone. My birthday is in two days, so we'll see if I get what I REALLY want as a gift....
I was originally planning on a diamond but when Mr. Stormy and I went ring shopping together we quickly realize that a diamond just wasn't 'us'. I don't have any photos of it, yet (my computer and camera have a somewhat 'rocky' relationship with each other;) but it is a pear shaped sky blue topaz in a white gold band with ten side stones. While I know that some people are rather surprised by our choice, I definately love the fact that it is distinct.
These rings are absolutely gorgeous! Love them~
