I’m trying to brainstorm some ideas about altar decoartions that do not incorporate flowers. Our ceremony venue is a warehouse, with exposed wooden beams, so it’s kinda rustic. It’s a non-religious ceremony, so have a lot of flexibility.
Please describe and post any pictures/links! I can’t wait to hear your suggestions!

Maybe bundles of long birch or manzanita branches? You could tie them with ribbon or put them in large vases. I was going to post some pictures, but Google is down at the moment. I searched “birch bundle”.

Candles!! Either on a candelabra or on tall pedestals! You could used oversized candles on rustic wood pedestals.

…Wait, if it’s a non-religious ceremony do you have an altar? Or do you just mean the ceremony site? If it’s the latter, here are some ideas:
papel picado (mexican hanging paper cut-outs)
light bulbs & lanterns
(here’s a pic with all three!): http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_2fy2gotuh00/Sq5p-0_h25I/AAAAAAAACCw/StafiL1SrsA/s1600-h/wedding+lights.jpg
penant garlands or hanging cranes: http://sdweddinginsider.com/blog/?p=628
pom poms: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/86/241795209_7ccd831424_o.jpg
I like the feather garlands this lady does on etsy: http://www.etsy.com/listing/38925224/white-feathers-with-gold-and-silver
Chandeliers, if you can rent ’em: http://couturebowl.blogspot.com/2009/10/chandelier-ium.html
I had friends who just strung up white christmas lights and then underneath had sheer pieces of fabric in their wedding colors. It looked lovely.

some old doors:
this is outside but could be duplicated inside with the poles placed in a bucket or planter:
candles in mason jars if you have a surface to display them:

Thanks ladies! For clarification, when I said altar, I meant the place that the groom and I will stand during the ceremony.
Have any of you seen pictures of something that consist of hanging ribbons? I heard this idea from a friend, and I can’t seem to find a picture. Anything would help!

I’ve thought a lot about this because our ceremony space is kind of undefined. I’m attaching pics of the actual space with a pic of the draping we’re planning to do. We will not have the hanging candle chandelier (that was brought in by a florist) and instead of having two pillars on each side, we’ll just have on pillar on each side with a wreath of peacock feathers and a hurricane with a candle (pictured on the dining room table).
