What about button or fabric boutonnière?
There are a bunch on Esty
What about doing a succulent boutonierre? They don't like water, so that may solve your problem!

Ummmm what else? Build something out of lego or connex if you're fun light hearted people? Old school toys? I'm doing wooden toy boutonierres for our ring bearers and my nephews.
Feathers?
Ribbon and fabric scraps?
I googled "non-floral boutonierre" and LOTS came up!
@futuremrsawesome: I love those black and white buttons! We are doing black and white! so cool
@bakerella: LOVE the feather idea!
I made boutonierres out of key chains. I did the swords from final fantasy for the groom and groomsmen and then a personalized one for my dad (Train), my uncle (motorcycle), grandfather (tractor) and for my future step father in-law (computer chip).
They weren't that difficult to make but it was hard to find the right sized objects. check out: http://rosenowfloral.com/frittsrosenow/gallery_scifichic/slideshow/gallery.html.
oooh! the third bout above was my inspiration for my DIY bouts!
here's the ones i made a couple weeks ago!
My fiance was recently in a wedding where the Groom was a mechanic. For their boutineers they used spark plugs with some greenery around it. It turned out very cute!

So I am DIYing my flowers, but I don't want to make boutonnieres. I'm afraid they'll take too long, die and turn brown (I'm doing white flowers).
I have thought of colorful pocket squares as a way to show some love to the boys, but I'm not convinced.
You bees always have great ideas.....so share some....pics appreciated.
