I had never had fondant until recently and have officially decided I do not want fondant on my wedding cake. I have been looking everywhere for butter cream frosted cake ideas and they are few and far between with little inspiration. My caterer doesn't even have any non-fondant cakes on their website!
Would any of you ladies and/or gentleman be willing to share pictures of your non-fondant cakes with me for inspiration? I am desperate!

Ours only had fondant decorations but the entire thing is butter cream. The girl who made our cake did a great job making it look smooth!
The last picture is of another cake she did that I saw and LOVED but it was covered in fondant so she made our cake similar but without the fondant.

I LOVEEE buttercream icing so it was a must have for my cake. I haven't tasted a fondant yet that I've liked.
i fell IN LOVE with this cake, its a Martha Stewart DIY cake but i bet you can take it into any cake maker and they can do it. you could decorate it with other fruit that match your colors, or you could do flowers instead of fruit, the possiblities are endless

this is the inspiration for our cake. Ours will be 3 layers with the swirly things on the top and bottom layer only and the center (smooth) layer will have a dark blue ribbon with a peacock feather. yay/yum :)

Many bakers can make buttercream icing so smooth that it looks like fondant! So don't worry so much about if your inspiration picture is fondant or not because you can achieve the same look with buttercream (without the icky fondant taste!).

Thank you so much for posting this! We're trying to keep costs down on our wedding cake, and one way of doing that is to use buttercream instead of fondant. Though I honestly didn't know that buttercream could look that smooth! FI and I love the taste of buttercream but the look of fondant...

I just noticed the top tier looks weird, but it's just the shadow from more poor photog skills :). This was all buttercream and yummy.
The majority of cakes online are actually buttercream. For ideas, do a Google image search for 'buttercream wedding cakes" and a ton of ideas should come up. Otherwise, www.cakecentral.com and www.flickr.com are great for inspiration.
We don't like the taste of fondant, but our bakery was still able to achieve the really smooth appearance of it in our cake using buttercream (it was delicious!):

@TaterTot26: I love that one! I have a few very similar ones that are in the running.
This is what I'm going for though. We're getting married outside and having a rustic/shabby chic theme going and I love the way this icing is done. Only I will have flowers instead of fruit even though I think the fruit looks gorgeous but just doesn't really go with our wedding decor.Plus I hate to so blatantly copy someone. lol But this is my inspiration since I am in the "I hate fondant" club. lol
These are the other ones I have on file similar to tatertot26's photo. I gotta have texture in my icing, I don't want all smooth. lol
@thelovecats: I love your inspiration photos! Especially the second and third ones... I wanted to have peach garden roses (I had them in my bouquet, too) on the cake, but my hubby wasn't down with flowers on the cake. (He figures if it's on the cake, it should be edible... go figure. :) )
But ours was beautiful - and I'm all about red raspberries.

ooh, so many good inspirations pics here. i love the look of textured buttercream with just a few simple flowers or fruit. i love that buttercream cakes are less than fondant since i conveniently like that look!

I didn't even realize this wasn't fondant as it is so smooth. Our cake will be buttercream and this is the inspiration picture I'll be taking to our baker when we visit (soon!).
I want it almost exactly like this, only with hot pink on the decoration instead of the green. And our topper instead of flowers.

These are awesome, thanks for this thread! I also do not want fondant. I might skip the white cake altogether and go with a chocolate ganache cake...drool...

Here's ours. We love it! It's buttercream and fresh flowers and black ribbon on the bottom of each layer.

Ours will be made of whipped cream frosting. It will look similar to this but probably with aqua ribbon and red flowers :-). Nothing too fancy, but love it!

my favourite cake...... it could be fondant on the cake itself but the decorations are obviously piped..... i don't like fondant either........
