I've hung paper lanterns outside for a couple of different parties now--unlit, during the daytime. And they look super!
I know that doesn't completely answer your question. But I've also noticed that Ikea, when they hang paper lanters in the store actually lights them remotely--ie, whether or not the light inside the lamp is on, there's a stronger light from overhead aimed at the lantern. My guess would be that depending on the venue, you might want to add some of those extra overhead lights (if possible) so that the lanterns don't kinda pile up and look dark...
Looking forward to hearing if others have actually done this!
World Market makes battery operated lanterns. I bought a package of three for a party.
How tall is the ceiling? You need to be careful that you don't have people running into them. I haven't ever seen them done like that, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't look good! Buy a few and take them to your venue to check it out.
I found a pack of 15 little LED lights that can be looped through lanterns to light them at Walmart for $10.
My neighbour did this in a hall for her wedding. It looked very nice even unlit. It made the hall very pretty and wasn't overwhelming. Go for it.
We were supposed to light the lanterns that we hung around our dance floor at the reception but we just didn't have the time to put them together. The lanterns looked great without them but I would've liked them lit just to create the mood I wanted.

So, I wanted to hang paper lanterns in our venue. It's a drop ceiling so it should be pretty easy but I am wanting to save $$ and not light them. Has anyone seen this done in something other than a tent? I have seen a lot of pics from weddings held in tents but the tent is so dramatic that the lanterns look great. Any help out there ladies??
