Just wanted to introduce myself to the local ladies.  Living in the Harrisburg area and engaged since March of this year.  I am in the process of nailing down a wedding date and it is not going well.  At first we were going to do fall of 2011, now it has moved up to October 17 2009 (yes, 6 weeks away).

If we do the October 09 plan we need to be cheap and homemade.  None of his family members are in the state, mine is closer but still more than an hour away.  I've stunned myself by coming up with a plan and locating nice rental stuff for an outdoor ceremony reception in our pretty backyard.  Have a menu plan, drink list, even favor ideas.  I even found a good photographer who is open that day, and within our budget.  So everything is cool right?

His family said they could make it even with the short notice.  Now they are telling us we will have to book hotel rooms for all the family members who come in for us.  No freaking way.  Maybe I'm a selfish cow, but every single out of town wedding I have ever been to has required paying my own way.  Why now should I pay for their rooms?  They know we don't have a lot of money to do this, and I never thought I would need to spell it out for them.

We have a $1500 budget and the rooms will cost $500 total.  Does this seem reasonable?  Am I being an ass?

Welcome! No, you are not being an ass. Lodging is the guests' responsibility, unless for some reason you wanted to pay for it.

If you don't have the money, you don't have the money. Do you have friends that they can maybe stay with?

Maybe they just needs a bunch of rooms blocked, but not asking your to pay for them? I'm not sure how it works, but I think you can call a hotel to block off a set of rooms for your guests. It probably requires a deposit, which your guests will have to pay back...

I never got a real answer from them, but it doesn't matter because we've decided to postpone until May 2010 so I can have the nicer wedding I really wanted.

We have found a farmhouse we can rent for the weekend that was renovated to a B&B, sleeps 26 people, 2 kitchens so we can do our own catering, a game room and tons of acres of pretty forest and grassy areas.  It's a steal too, I'll post more info after I've booked.  Thanks for all the advice!
