I live in northern NJ, Passaic county, and I’m currently loving it! It’s more of a country-like area (dirt roads, state parks and wildlife!). Some areas are more city-like and more are suburban. My husband grew up around here so the choice was easy, but I’d probably start with what you like. Close to Hoboken, close to the beach? And then budget and school districts! If you meet with a realtor, they may be able to point you in the right direction!

We live in Bayonne right next to the bridge to SI. DH is also from Brooklyn and likes it here.

@fashionlove: I’m down in Monmouth County – grew up in Marlboro. You won’t regret moving to Monmouth County (if you do) – Marlboro, Manalapan, Freehold, Colts Neck are all great with great schools!! Summit, Madison, Millburn, Short Hills, and Livington are also beautiful areas with wonderful schools, but are also very expensive. Cranford is nice too!

@Hobokenbride2012: OMG I live like a 5 minute drive from the SI bridge >.<
I like Bayonne, but the parking in my neighborhood is horrendous.

@tmsing: I lived in Hoboken for 27 years so parking in Bayonne doesn’t even compare.
