So, truth be told, I am the girl that picked the “good enough” dress because I had only a 7-month engagement and $500. And while I like my dress, I can’t say it’s everything I’ve ever dreamed of. I felt pressured to buy a dress right away so it could come in, have time for alterations, etc.
So, I bought this pretty dress. I added a halter strap and cut off the train. Total with alterations was $485.
I was looking for a particular dress that fit for a thread on WB awhile ago when I saw this. It’s currently $400 and is full-lace, like I really wanted but couldn’t find.
The wedding is June 2. I know I can’t get my money back out of an altered dress on resale. Is it time to just give it up and wear the dress I have, or should I look into the lace dress I want?

Also any comments as to why you voted as you did would be great. 🙂

I really like the second dress… do you like it BETTER, or just as much? Or just differently? IF you can afford to spend the $$ and you like the second dress better and you think you will be happier wearing that one, then go for it. Dont do it if it’s going to put a financial strain on the day, your first dress is also lovely.

I am not a fan of the halter straps on your dress. I think it would look great without it even thou you just added it…sorry jmo
I think it would look nice with a beaded sash added too it!

After re-reading, you haven;t tried it on or anything? Do you think you could find it, try it on and have it in time for the wedding? You might just be adding un-necesairy stress 😛

@capergrrl I like #2 a little better. It is much closer than dress 1 to what I had in mind. I’m so torn because it seems like a waste to buy another dress when I already have one that’s perfectly fine.

@risingsun: I think if you can afford to get the other dress (with the alterations and all that) and you don’t mind losing the money you spent on the first dress, you should go for it. I would have a hard time giving up the money I had already spent, but that’s just me.

I think your original dress is beautiful and really compliments your figure! I also love the second dress but keep in mind that alterations will add up quickly. Have you tried on the second dress to see how many alterations you would need? If you have the money and the alterations would be limited (maybe just the hem) then maybe it would be worth it to you to switch.

@weddingbound: I second this. A beaded sash would really add some umph to your dress; were the straps added for support or because you just prefer the halter neckline? My thought is to try and tuck in the straps during the ceremony and then wear them during the reception, if wardrobe malfunction while dancing is the concern.
I think with the time you have left, and the fact that you haven’t tried this new dress on, you should stick with your current dress. Maybe scour CL or local sample sales, if you really want to change dresses, so that you can try them on.

I got a second dress very similar to the one you posted that you want to get, so I think it is beautiful! However, I love the first dress on you too. I got a second one because I felt extremely uncomfortable in the first one. If you feel like you would regret NOT getting the second one and you can afford it, get it! You can consign or sell the first one and try to get money back for it! If you choose to keep the first, it looks beautiful on you so don’t worry!! Good luck

Thank you all for the feedback so far!
Halter strap questions: I’m just not comfortable in strapless. Plus I don’t know if I have a long chest or what, but I felt like there was this long distance between my shoulders and the dress that was accentuated in a strapless? Anyway, having a strapless dress isn’t an option I want for me.
I do love beaded sashes, but this dress has a corset back (which I really like, and is something dress 2 does not have).
I should have anticipated this question — but no, I have not tried on dress 2. I tried on similar shapes that look fine but as we all know, every dress is different. So yes, I could get it on and hate it. Should I call DB and see if they have one in so I can see it in person?

@weddingbound: Agree with this.
I voted for the second dress.

I like dress 2 better. But would you even be able to get it on time for your wedding if you chose to go with it?

@weddingbound: I absolutely agree with you.
@risingsun: I just read your response to the PPs. I know you don’t want strapless but the one on your dress doesn’t look like it’s placed right. Adding a necklace would help breakup the skin between neck and bust. At this point I don’t think you have much of a choice but to keep what you have. I would call DB and ask if they have 2 but if they do not have it in store it will not come in in time for your wedding. They will quote you 2-3 months for arrival.

If you have the money to get the dress you really want, I say go for it. This is your time to shine! 🙂
