Well, that's not entirely true, but the fitting is saturday morning and I have period bloat in addition to not being at my goal weight and I'm just generally pissed off about the whole thing and life in general. I don't have undergarments yet because I need to see how low the dress dips in the back before I buy anything so I'm just going to have to use some crap I have laying around that won't be strong enough to get the job done.

Seriously though, minimal food, lots of water. My mom told me to "starve myself" - great parenting, right?

What food should I eat that is essentially not food?

Don't starve yourself. Just eat sensibly. Fruits and veggies. Whole grains. Stay away from anything with a lot of salt or caffiene.

I would mostly avoid salty food, obviously. Maybe raw veggies?

Lol at your mom's comment though. Sounds like something my mom would suggest!!

Well, don't starve yourself obviously:)  But here's my best advice:

    (1) take midol - I find it really helps with period-related water rentention

    (2) no soda; only water and LOTS of it

    (3) no salty foods

    (4) for this short term purpose, i'd go for low carb - eat only lean proteins and veggies (remember, no salt)

I think not eating is probably a bad idea. Chances are if you're feeling a bit cranky right now, you're not going to be in any better of a mood once you're hangry! Besides, you're going to want to eat at the wedding, so I would get the fitting done true to your body. Just eat healthy for the next few days and it'll be fine! If this is your first fitting, you'll have another for any further adjustments correct?

Oh and for the record so I'm not misconstrued, I don't plan on actually starving/not eating. I just need to eat foods that aren't food.

Celery. Lots and lots of celery.

And everyone says you don't actually get to eat at your own wedding, though, right? I'm not too keen on that. In fact that might be my first real meal from now until then.

Speed up your metabolism by eating small meals every 3 hours that have lots of fiber (veggies and fruit) and lean protein. Go low low carb for these few days too and lay low on the salt.

    Good luck!

oh...I agree with grape. I love frozen grape. Takes longer to eat (nibble on them since they are so cold) and fills you up cause they take so long to eat :)

don't do anything extreme-- you'll just bounce back. try not to eat like crap, drink water, wear spanx, and remember that it's better to have to take something in more than have to let it out.

Things to eat (and I advise this for only a short period of time - everything in moderation):

Proteins - grilled chicken, tuna (NOT tuna salad)
Veggies & Fruit with high water content - salad (NO dressing), carrots, celery, grapes

    Things to avoid:

Bread, crackers, salt, soda, coffee, bananas (they actually can make you bloat a bit), starches (potatoes)

@camrie: LOL so cut out all the good stuff. I can't cut out coffee. I think I'd rather be a fat bride than go without coffee. Come to think of it, I wouldn't even make it to the wedding because I would kill my FI before we got to that point. I am not human until I've had coffee. Diet coke I can manage to cut out I think. Thanks for the tip re: bananas - didn't know that one.

Camrie is exactly right ! All of those foods are perfect. Melon has high water content as well.

You'll be okay with a little coffee, just drink tons of water before and after.

@camrie:why no coffee?  Is it because the caffeine gives you cravings?

@Kittyachi: water, water and more water.  A co-worker and I once tried the model diet (tuna and pineapple - I'm sure if you lived on that you wouldn't bloat - but it was too gross.  Stick with anti-inflamatory type foods (all veggies - raw as possible).  NO WHEAT.  Also - avocados are anti-inflamatory and satiating.

Hah I did this too...I was just a couple pounds off from where I wanted to be..and just by not eating a big dinner the night before, working out and only eating a tiny bit the morning of, I managed to fluctuate a couple pounds downward by the time my fitting came that afternoon. Not entirely a bad idea!

@SanDiegoAli: Seconded. I also want to point out that a friend of mine recently threw up and passed out at her fitting.  She's not a dieter, but had totally lost her appetite a couple days earlier.  What scared her that the women at the salon said passing out and being sick were common because so many brides don't eat before the fitting - they were used to it.

Avoiding salt won't hurt, though, and will keep you from retaining more water.

@Kittyachi - Love your sense of humor!

Watermelon is great.  I also drink a ton of ice tea.  I like that caffeine is a diuretic and I feel like it helps with bloating while also getting a lot of water in you.  And have protein with your celery!  Cottage cheese, hummus, natural peanut butter...

My dress came in surprisingly yesterday and they had a fitting spot available and I had just had a bowl of pasta for lunch.  I know it probably didn't change a thing, but I think you just feel more your best when you eat super healthy.

You are going to make a BEAUTIFUL bride!! You really have nothing to worry about I am sure!

That being said... I am sure all us ladies will feel/already feel something along those lines, or else its just you and me girl! Mine isn't until March next year and I am already freaking out about my shape, HA!

ANYWHO, the low carb route is great for cutting down anything on the tummy super fast, but just a warning, it can make you super duper cranky because the lack of sugar slows your seratonin release... but if you can hack it... it works fast. Also some cardio in the morning is AWESOME because it gets your metabolism blasting a little more all day long, even if its just 15 minutes. Water, water, water, no eating after 7:30, get your 5-7 servings of plant (I have no idea wether its a fruit or a vegetable by definition so I just call 'em plants) and you should be GOLDEN!

No worries though, you really will be beaming the day of and I am sure your dress will be awesome on you! Congratulations!

@oracle: Well black coffee is fine with a tiny bit cream and sugar. But most people have "coffee" and they're actually drinking some caramel, sugary, whipped cream monstrosity. :)

@Kittyachi: Yeah sorry, guess it IS all the good stuff. But my thinking is - what's giving up the good stuff for a couple weeks to be able to enjoy all the amazing food I'll have around my wedding? I'd never eat like that all the time (I love a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger).

Eh, veggies will make you gassy, especially raw ones. Stick to smaller portions, lots of agua, take some potassium if you feel desperate (helps flush water weight)

Oatmeal is good...chicken, brown rice, spinach (no broccoli! or beans).....yeah. Life's gonna suck =P. You could also do some protein shakes maybe. almonds, too....

@xoxokristin, LOL. My mom's the same way =P

I just started going to a nutritionist and she has me drinking a mix of 29 oz water with 3 oz pure cranberry juice (not the Ocean Spray stuff that has apple or grape juice mixed in) every day. I thought it was a load of BS but did it anyway. Well let me tell you, I have lost 5 lbs of water weight in a week & a half and all my clothes fit so much better - I was horribly bloated before. So if you're still desperate you might give that a shot.

I just need to say I totally love this thread and all the tricks and tips we have! I'm gonna repeat the LOTS OF WATER and go totally carb free (uhhh I would rather eat bread and butter than anything else!)

PS my mom told me yesterday when my dress wouldn't zip that it was because I was so sweaty (she told me like 5 times... awesome Mom, 'cause love being the sweaty girl) and I'll be down 10 lbs when she comes back from vacay in 10 days! OH REALLY!?!?! hahaha thanks for the wishful thinking

Whenever I need to slim down fast, I cut out all salt from my diet (which means actually cooking food yourself), eat tons of veggies, fruit and lean protien, drink a lot of water and eat smaller portions, esp at night.

DO NOT eat diet food. It will make you fat. I know, it's silly right? No diet coke, no diet bars/shakes. They may be low fat but they're loaded with sugar and carbs, you'll be starving 30 mins after eating a 'meal'.

Also, if I need to slim down pronto for some kind of emergency, I cut out carbs. But this only lasts for about 24 hours, I don't recommend it for any longer than that, it's a recipe for disaster.

You can actually cut up celery and put it in sugar free jello and it makes a decent snack.  Not great, but good when you really need something sweet.

Oh, and I HIGHLY recommend that you DO NOT focus on eating food that isn't food. A diet of cucumber and celery will make you a hungry, nasty person and most likely it'll end up in a binge of cupcakes or something. Grill yourself some chicken and steam a cutup zucchini. Filling, delicious and slimming.

Well considering I'm pretty much always cranky, I don't think anyone would notice the difference :)

Currently eating a delicious apple and drinking my umpteenth bottle of water. Took some period meds so the bloat has subsided somewhat. Did not cut out coffee but also I drink my coffee totally black - nothing added at all - so that's not as bad I don't think.

At least I LIKE fruits and veggies. I really do. Otherwise this whole thing would be totally hopeless.

anyone up for a dieting thread? I mean, we have a couple of fitness threads, but we have so many tips, and it sounds like we are all trying to eat healthfully/slim down at some point... I could use some accountability and motivation... I ate two atkins sweet things today and feel like a fatty mcfatterson.

@Habibah14: Yes! I could not believe it - I had been retaining water like crazy since last fall. I looked like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. I think I had been drinking the cranberry for 3 or 4 days when I noticed a difference. I'm still horrifically out of shape, but I don't look like a float in the Macy's parade anymore :)

@KikiD: My mom used to make jello with celery and carrot cut up in little pieces - best in green Jello. I think it started in the 50's. She used a mold, etc. So retro, but it's really good!
