Hi ladies--
Been struggling with the dress search. Never wanted to be a "princess" type of bride, and a lot of the lace slim dresses I've seen seem a little...old. Stumbled across this, and can't stop looking at it:

What do you guys think? What's the pros and cons of not going through a traditional bridal boutique? Thanks :)
It is a beautiful dress and I see nothing wrong with skipping the bridal salon. However, the site says the dress is not available, do you know if it will be?
That dress is very lovely, and the lace work is wonderful! I think it looks plenty bridal, and accesorized correctly could look even more so. You don't HAVE to go through a professional salon, but it's nice to be able to see a gown on you before you put the money down to purchase it. There's always that slim "What if I hate it?" factor.
@tksjewelry: Read some of the discussion boards on the site, and looks like they are getting new shipments soon. They seem to be able to track down the larger sizes (6-12) and I'm an 8, so we'll see....
Have also found some other vendors online that sell.
Thanks for your input, my first post :)
holy smokes i think it's beautiful!
You could also look at the designers Ivy and Aster, J. Crew, Amy Michaelson, and BCBG (website) for similar styles to this one.
@mvanderhoff: Oh, that's good. I like the idea of Norstoms as they have a great return policy. I think you should go for it. The back is to DIE FOR!
@tksjewelry: GAH! I KNOW. The back blew me away. Love the model's hair there too--I just think it's so womanly. Vintage-y, but elegant.
@Olive12: Thanks! Excited to be getting such a positive reaction on this. Sent my mom a picture too, can't wait to hea her take.
That dress is beautiful! I love the back of it. I don't see anything wrong with not buying a dress from a bridal salon. A lot of women DON'T get their dress from a bridal store and instead get it from Nordstrom, Macy's, JCrew, etc. or from somewhere online. As long as you find a good, reputable seamstress if you need alterations, I think you'll be fine.
@Mrs. Fireworks: Thanks, that's comforting to hear. I mentioned to my fiance, and he was like are you SURE you don't want to go through a "professional"--but my point was, the shop would be ordering a dress in the mail too, the only difference is where it goes! Store, or my home!
Was also thinking solid seamstress, and maybe a steaming/dry clean first.
i think its beautiful and honestly i think threre will be no problems not going through a boutique. nordstroms has a great return policy. it looks very wedding-y to me and i would not bat an eyelasy to see it in a bridal magazine. i LOVE the back and the collar part. love it! if it came in my size i thing i would strongly consider getting it!
It's amazing, the lace wrap around the waist is incredible! I went looking at Nordstrom too, trying to find an unwedding dress- dress. I found the one below, but, for my body shape, ended up going with something a little more traditional and a-line.
Nordstrom is fantastic.
Oh wow. That dress is STUNNING. If that's what you want, go for it!
I think that looks beautiful! Great find and I love the lace!
I think that dress is gorgeous and it's better than some stuff that I've came across in actual bridal stores!
its a beautiful dress and i would love to see a picture of it on a real person!
I think if you find a dress that makes you happy and feel beautiful then there is no reason why you would have to go through a normal bridal salon. I didn't go through a salon, I ordered a dress online and am reconstructing it. I felt no need to have that 'dress' moment with my mother or anything like that.
You can always go try on dresses of similar styles to make sure the fit will look good on you.
that dress is amazing! i think it is an incredible choice.
that said, if you do choose it and are interested in selling your dress post-wedding, let me know- i will totally buy it!
I love it!!!
And there's nothing wrong with not going to a botique. And I would never have known you didn't get this one at one.
I'd say the only con would be alterations, which you can get done at a bridal salon if you want to I'm sure.
Its so beautiful! I'm sure by skipping the bridal store you will be saving yourself from a few headaches :) Go for it!
DO IT! I ordered a few dresses from nordstrom's to try on... none of them worked, so they are were returned with NO issues!
Also, Nordstrom's alteration department charges significantly less than a bridal shop... I'm talking, I had an evening gown altered there (shortened and waist taken in with hips let out) for $40.
That dress is BEAUTIFUL! I ordered mine from The Limited and I love it... while sometimes I wish I tried on the "big princess" dresses... it's just not me, and I'd rather flaunt my figure!
i think it looks very bridal! plus, nordstrom's usually has excellent customer service, from my experience and what I've heard (my mil swears by it!), so that's a huge plus.
The dress is very beautiful and if you like it when you try it on, score! There's nothing to say which kind of dress is perfect, and the only reason bridal shops exist is because of the mass-marketing and target sales of dress making over the past few decades. In the 70s and even 80s (and definitely before then), people made their own dresses so they could have what they wanted, or work with material that was available to them. Today, it's a huge industry. If you can skip the bridal boutiques, you're not missing out on much! Celebrate the wedding with how YOU want to look!!
I also browsed Nordstrom for a wedding dress and I found some really good dresses for reasonable prices! Since getting engaged in December I've been looking at a lot of different wedding websites and sources, and just today discovered Simply Bridal, based out of LA. I was looking at their selection of dresses and came across this style that is very similar to the Tadashi dress sold at Nordstrom. The color is different and the back is lace...I'm not sure if the Tadashi gown is beaded or just lace appliques, sort of hard to tell in pictures/didn't mention in the item description. But here is the link, if you want to check it out! They're also having CRAZY promo sales right now!!

Good Luck and happy shopping! The style you chose is beautiful, either way! :)
I think it's gorgeous! My friend, who is getting married in March, got her dress from Nordstrom and she loves it!!!! Her 'backup dress' option is also from Nordstrom. They make very nice stuff!
