So I have had a bit of a cold all week and it got worse overnight -really stuffed up, dry cough, generally not feeling well.  I don't have a fever.  Do you guys know if there is anything cleared for an otherwise healthy women to take? I will call my doctor on Monday but I would really like to feel a bit better this weekend too!

A steam humidifier at night will really help a lot. That's what I use when I get sick and it makes a big difference.

My "ok" list from my doctor has Robatussin on it as well as Tylenol.

For a stuffy nose, I usually take Mucinex D.

I had some severe asthma and colds during my 2nd tri.  I used a neti pot and nasal saline rinses to clear out the mucus.  I drank a lot of honey/lemon tea as well and took my pulmicort faithfully.

Here is one of the nice lists of medications that can be used and in what trimester:

    http://www.obfocus.com/high-risk/meds1.htm

I've always stayed away from cough suppressants because of a study in New England Journal of Medicine several years ago showing that they are no better than placebo at reducing cough, but can have negative side effects.  We encourage all parents not to use OTC cough suppressants for their children, so I wouldn't want my fetus to be exposed either.

Tylenol is always ok, but doesn't seem to work at all for me!

My OB said that benadryl is perfectly fine and safe and currently I use it nightly to reduce my horrible itching from the Lanolin allergy.  It works well to dry up congestion too.

Please remember this isn't medical advice.  I'm glad that you are talking to your doctor as soon as you can, but remember that you can call their office on weekends too and the on-call doc will call you back and advise you.

Thank you all so much.  I have gone back and forth on bothering the on call doc this weekend - I will do that if I still feel badly tomorrow.  I almost downed some dayquil at 2 AM but thought better about it luckily!

just talked to the pharmacist and he thinks its safest to just use tylenol and saline so that is my plan! that and lots of rest, tea and a humidifier that is :)

I second the Neti pot. It was a lifesaver for me when I had a head cold in February. My neti pot, tylenol and peppermint tea got me through it! I hope you feel better soon!

I LOVE my neti pot! I use it daily for my allergies. Works just as good as allergy meds and it's cheap, natural and works instantly. Great for allergies and colds! :)

Hope you're feeling better!  I personally try to stay away from medication as much as I can (I'm not prego, but would do the same if I was) because I just worry about what it does to my body.  One of my favorite things when I'm ill is making some lemon tea with a squeeze of honey...yum! :)

thanks :) Apparently this was not something tea & honey were going to help  - had a sinus infection and two days of antibiotics have made a WORLD of difference!  While I also prefer to not overmedicate, my docs said it was good I came in because an infection is not good for the baby!
