@weddingbee098:  Why didn’t you get assigned the work?  Was it because you were on a big project that required all of your time or is it possible that you are being passed over on purpose?  I would likely discuss the issue with my supervisor before going to HR.

@weddingbee098:  talk to HR about how you want/need to be billable. If they can’t make that happen, then start looking elsewhere.

I am also a consultant so I get the billable vs. not argument. Right now, I am on a “budget” client and my hourly rate is $29 less per hour than my previous client. I get less bonus because of it, which I think is bull, but I’m not contributing as much to the pot either. It’s luck if the draw.

Not being billable is an issue I would take up with HR. I probably wouldn’t complain about getting less bonus.

Unfortunately that is how consulting works.  You have to suck up or be extremely attentive so you can build enough rapport that you get requested by clientele or assigned by management because they know you will provide excellent service (because you alreday know how to suck up to management.)  You can either fit into the company culture or you can find another job and hope their bonus structure is different.  It depends on your specific line of work.  I prefer to be salaried because I hate being chained to a desk to perform the minimum required billable hours and then still be expected to complete additional hours to prove that I am motivated and/or partnership material.  No Thanks.  Maybe consulting under this company’s corporate structure just isn’t for you.

Large companies have a pre-determined bonus structure. They aren’t going to change it for one person.

@weddingbee098:  The whole point of a predetermined bonus structure IS for transparency and fairness.

Complaining about the system will make you look bad and will further seperate you from the managing higher ups you need to be impressing. You catch more flies with honey. I would focus on the relationships and attitude you need to be a chosen for billable work. No one wants to pick a whiner. If you hate the structure that much than I would just start looking for other work!
