So, my wedding is about 3 weeks away and I just had my 2nd dress fitting today. I don't really like how the dress looks on me, my hips just stick out too much. I'm not fat or even chubby by any means, it's just my shape. I wasn't able to try on dresses before buying because my mom is in Indiana and I'm in NYC and didn't have anyone to go dress shopping with. Plus, I paniced because I was trying to hold off on the dress shopping until I could go with my mom, but that was before I realized how long it could take for a dress to come in. Sooo, I did online shopping with her and found a dress we both liked that I THOUGHT would look good on me, but when I finally tried it on (after I paid for it), my hips just don't look right in it (didn't buy it online, went to a shop but they didn't have a sample for me to try). It's a little disappointing, but I don't have the money for another dress, or the time. I still think the dress itself is BEAUTIFUL, just not that great on me. Not in love with your dress, but have to wear it anyway? : wedding Icon SadAnyone else in a similar situation?

Any way for you to sell this dress and order one from Jcrew or similar online store?  They might be returnable so if you don't like it you can return it?

Aw honey!! {{{HUGS!!!}}}  I had the same thing happen, so I went on ebay and got a hell of a deal on a dress.  When I tried it on I LOVED IT, and I used the money I put down on the other dress to buy a veil and tailoring services.

So sorry, but maybe you'll end up loving it in pictures?  That happened to my SIL.  She hated her dress, but then she saw herself on camera and she fell in love with it.

It's not like completely horrible, but it's definitely not as flattering as another dress could be. I've looked into J.Crew, and I wasn't a huge fan of those dresses, not to mention the majority of them cost more than my dress :p I am looking around to see if I can find anything used or if there is anything on clearance at an online store or something, but with 3 weeks left to go, I am really strapped for cash. I could try to sell my dress, but there's no guarantee! I was wearing a waist slimmer thing when I tried on the dress but I think I'll try it without it next time (got it in the first place because I was a 1/2 inch bigger in my measurements than the measurements for the dress size and we didn't order a size up). I think it's making my waist skinnier, but not my hips so much, so they appear to stick out more... We'll see! My mom didn't like her wedding dress either (an aunt of hers custom made it) so it would be a not-so-great tradition if I don't like mine on me either :p

Here's pics of me in it. I was taking them myself in the mirror, so it's not great, but you get the gist. The dress is Sottero and Midgely style VSM4047, beautiful, but not meant for my proportions apparently :p These pics dont make it seem to stick out quite as much as when I tried it on today. The only altering being done is to make it shorte. IIIIII dunno.

pics too big I guess, so here's the links

    http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h119/gotchyagood14/IMG_4050.jpg?t=1241134106

camera kinda in the way here, but if it weren't, it shows how it actually looks on me a bit better http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h119/gotchyagood14/IMG_4049.jpg?t=1241134130

Maybe my waist is too short and it's not my hips even? I'm not sure, it's just not quite right lol

Hmmmm, is the problem maybe that with the dropped waist it looks like your torso is too short?  Or that you are not used to looking "curvy"?  I actually really like it on you; I think you look great.  But since you don't feel comfortable with it...  I would try it without the slimming garments.  That might help.  I don't really have any other suggestions, I guess.  It is a really beautiful dress, and I think you look great it in.

I agree, I actually think it is lovely!

Does your waist slimmer end at or just below your waist, above the fullest part of your hips?  If so, that may definitely be the problem.  Go without, or look for some sort of undergarment that extends to a lower point along your hip line, preferably something that does not have stretchy sides, because that will help smooth the line more, I think.

    Good luck, and congratulations!!

Wow!  I think you look fantastic!  I love that dress!  And I think you look stunning it but it's all about how YOU feel in it.

I also have a pear shape with a well-defined waist and it was amazing how the right bra could take me from looking bottom heavy to balanced and curvy!

Caitlanc, could I ask what your suggestion for a bra is? I'd actually prefer to wear one, because a. for coverage when I'm changing into the dress on the wedding day, and b to add a little oomph so as to impress the FI a bit Not in love with your dress, but have to wear it anyway? : wedding Icon Wink In  those pics I didn't have one on. Today I had a strapless when I tried it, but it seemed to make me look too "squishy" on top (a result of the bra being slightly too small and the top of the dress fitting perfectly without a bra). Maybe if the corset wasn't tied as tight either, idk. Either way, the bra was just a strapless that I had around, not one I bought for the wedding, and not one I particularly liked in the first place! Just hadn't really found anything any better though.

Did I mention these last 30 days are the most stressful? lol) Thanks again! I don't know what I'd have done if I hadn't found this website. I only wish I had found it sooner!

I think you look gorgeous!  If you want, try adding some cup inserts to your bra to bring the girls up and to help balance proportion.  But overall, it fits you like a glove!

I think the others are right -- you do look lovely.  And slender.  However, I have a similar shape to you -- curvy, meaning a small waist, NOT meaning plus size, so I know how you're feeling.  I often put something on and while others are thinking "wow, tiny waist," I'm thinking "HELLO hips!"  You really, really do look lovely, BUT if you don't feel 100% amazing in the dress, my rec is to see if the seamstress can make it slight more a-line.  That'll still show off your waist, bust and shoulders, but will probably take away the feeling you have that your hips jut out.  The only issue of course, is that alterations like that aren't always cheap, and aren't always possible depending on where the seams run and how much extra fabric there is.

Anyway, just thought I'd offer that up, even though, as others have said, you look amazing.  It's a very romantic dress and absolutely gorgeous!

I haven't read each post, but considering I did one my one day of dress shopping yesterday, the information I am about to offer might just be ignorant.

What about a sample from a store?

They often have discontinued dresses for like half the cost. I tried some on and they were marked down to like $300. I know the tailoring can be expensive, but I am hopeful you can find something. More optimisim-my dress fit perfect off the rack, no fitting costs. So, there is hope.

I actually purchased my dress yesterday, second dress I tried on, however, not one that was on sale. I would have loved the price that is for sure ! However, probably more important that you love your dress, of course all the while staying in your budget.

And from what you can see at the Hive, women are looking for dresses here, or craigslist or ebay.

One other thought, perhaps you think your hips "stick" out too much but in reality perhaps it just gives you more figure appeal than you are used to seeing on yourself, a part of your body you don't often attract attention to and your FH will be so happy to see you in a way he and you had ever before seen :)

Just saw the photos ...... YOU LOOK AMAZING!!!

If you are still worried, perhaps you take the side up a bit, the area where the material stretches across the hips is pretty low on the dress adding emphasis to that area. I actually think it loves lovely. But you could maybe, because of the raunching, have the length of that area shortened, giving you a fuller skirt.

Your soon to be husband is going to love seeing you walk down a aisle wearing this dress!

I actually think the dress looks really flattering on you!  I like the drop waist, shows off your figure and looks really pretty.  Although, if you're not happy with it, I think you could try mizunoheaven's suggestion of shortening the area with the ruching.

I think it's a great dress and you look great in it.

Having the right underwear will make a big difference! It did when I went for my second fitting. And this was just a bra change, no spanx.

Go to a good bra store. Linda's in the upper east side is good. I got my wedding dress in Brooklyn, at Kimera on Atlantic Ave. The store shares space with a bra fitter. It's in the basement of the store, I don't remember the name.

I think the dress is very very beautiful! And you look stunning in it! You really do! I would look into what the other ladies have suggested-- possibly a padded strapless bra might help even things out a little. And instead of the waist slimmer, have you thought about spanks or something similar? That might help even out the hip area a little.

I personally think you could wear it as you do in those pictures & you'll look beautiful!!!

Thanks everyone! I'm going to try to find a good push up bra or something, and try without the waist slimmer. The dress isn't very thin so I'm not afraid of lumps. I do have to shimmy into the dress a bit, but I'm guessing that the slimmer isn't taking THAT much off. If it is, then back on it goes, or on to spanx!

Yeah, I'd like to echo what everyone else said- I think you look BEAUTIFUL in your dress.  We have a similar build, and the truth is, I was surprised by what my body looked like in dresses when I started to try on wedding gowns, since I usually wear jeans.  I have a little waist like you, and curvy hips, but am small all over (a size 4).  You look like a KNOCKOUT in that dress because it highlights all your great features and your shape.  Also I think it's natural to feel stressed in the final month, and to second guess everything, but you honestly look beautiful, and your husband is going to be speechless when he sees you!

First off I want to say that you look absolutely gorgeous in the dress!

But, if you feel uncomfortable I would consider buying the spanx, the ones that slim the hips, and trying those. I think if you really want to wear a bra, you should. I had cups sewn into my strapless dress, and it's so comfortable, and it looks great! I do think the bustier/bra you posted above would work. And yoou could probably send it back if you try it on with the dress and it doesn't work!!! I would definately just try the spanx that slim the hips and I think you will be a lot more comfortable, not that you need to :)!

You look so lovely!  And you'll be such a gorgeous bride too..very pretty dress also!

I liken this situation to when I bought my last vehicle.  I got a 2007 Rav4 Sport edition (new bodystyle).  Last year I decided I hated it.  I wanted a new one.  Or at least the same thing in a different color.

And I've done the same thing with dresses too.  it's natural.  This is an important day.  You always second guess yourself b/c you're human.  I bet everybody on this entire board does too!  But let US tell you the truth in what we see..you look fabulous!  I don't see any hip issue.  And when your hair and makeup are done, heels on, proper undergarments, etc, you'll be a bombshell!

omg it looks fab on you! I guess i'm just not sure what it is you aren't loving about it! You could get a corset bustier type top to lift and support, but not squish if that's an issue.

Definitely some spanx if you feel your hips need some smoothing out. They make some long body kinds that hug your rib cage, waist, and hip. I like it b/c no matter how skinny you are, it just smoothes everything out nicely. And, it gives you something to sweat on. I'd rather sweat onto my undergarments than my dress or just down my legs

A friend of mine got married recently and lifted up her to dress to prove to us how warm she was under her lacy ballgown...her legs were bright red and completely dripping in sweat. Needles to say, I am 100% convinced in need capri undergarments!

I agree! Dress is beautiful, and it is beautiful on YOU :)

I initially looked at dresses with that style, but unfortunately, it never went well with my 4"11 figure =\

Also, I think alot of dresses are made so that it'll enhance curves. I went shopping and the lady said "these give you the hourglass figure, and that's what you want :)"

Your dress fits you great! It is a beautiful dress! I also have curvy hips and a smaller bust, I bought a wonderbra from macys and it gave me that extra umph without squishing my skin so it didn't overflow over my dress. You can return it too if it does not look good in your beautiful dress!

Thanks guys! I went and had my 3rd fitting today and I did NOT wear the waist slimmer thing and I really liked the dress much better (and I was waaaay more comfy!). Maybe it was just my mood that day or something, I don't know, but I felt much happier about it today. I also just wore my regular strappless bra and it gave me a bit on top (it's corset back and I think she just didn't tie it as tight this time because I didn't look too squished). I was also browsing through the catalogues a bit because there's only one woman working there and she was a bit busy today (I didn't mind, and I didn't have an exact appointment time anyway) and I noticed that quite a few of the models' hips "stuck out." I guess it really is just more of an hourglass thing and I'm not used to seeing my hips like that! I mean, I don't wear baggy stuff or sweats all the time, but it's generally jeans and maybe a flowy top or something. I'm looking forward to it now
