Is it weird that I am not so excited about my trial? I paid $175 and I don’t see myself as beautiful and gorgeous as other brides say they see themselves after a trial ….. My MUA took high def picture at job done and sent them to me but I am not so satisfied by what I saw, I am very critical though and I like things done my way.
I am a little pain in the neck, I usually do my own hair and make up and I know exactly what I like and how I want it to be done (especially for make up) – I didn’t go crazy with the results, it was OK, not stunning though. Besides she kept on pulling my hair and I didn’t feel comfortable telling her how I felt about the look … I felt like she was getting offended that I didn’t like her work or didn’t let her do it her way.
Should I try someone else?
What bugs me is that she came highly recommended, she had 20+ reviews all 5++ and everybody seemed super happy with her and everybody seemed to love her so much …….. and why I didn’t feel that way?
I was thinking of doing at least my own make up on my wedding but I don’t think its gonna be a good idea, I’ll be too preoccupied with other things to be able to concentrate on my make up …. I really don’t know what to do, should I try at least someone else? I feel like I am already spending so much money on these trials!!! 🙁
Were you happy with your trial right away?

I think we need to see some pictures!

🙂 pictures won’t help because you are gonna see me for the first time and it might look nice to you but I don’t see myself pretty as I don’t feel that is ME.
But overall, she put airbrush foundation that was 1 or 2 shades lighter than the rest of my body (no good), the up do was almost what I wanted (not exactly though), about the make up, I asked for black smokey eye and that’s what I got but I don’t like the result as it’s too dramatic, so I might go with dark brown instead.
I am dark, have olive skin, hopefully I’ll be tan for the wedding.
The overall work was not horrible, I just didn’t see myself looking so hot, I have looked better with my own make up.

After my first trial, I felt gross. I couldn’t wait for the hair to come down and to get home to take off the makeup. The hair wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t for me–but the makeup, oh the makeup! It made me look older and tired and it was done in a way that didn’t take my facial structure or features into account. It sucked, especially since I spent $150 for nothing.. I then did another hair trial (and would have done more if I hadn’t liked the results) and decided to do my own makeup.
You should be happy with the hair/makeup–it’s the first thing that gets done and if you’re not happy with it, it sets a bad tone for the rest of the day. Remember, everyone will be looking at you and you need to feel like your best!

Don’t be down – – Did you go to your appt w/ inspiration pictures? Sometimes if you don’t have pictures and you’re trying to guide your artist by verbally explaining your vision it doesn’t always come to fruition exactly the way you see it in your mind. Lets see some inspiration pix of hair + make up you like…I def think you should feel comfortable sharing what you do and don’t like. Maybe you can let her know what you’re crazy about and what you’d like to try again!?!?!?

Hi Jackie, actually, I had some pictures with me…. problem is that they see something different from what I see.
For example I showed a picture of a soft wavy updo and what did she do? She teased all my hair up creating a huge bubble (which I hate hate hate) and then she kept on saying that that’s what the picture looks like …. well, I didn’t see any puffiness in the picture at all.
The same happened another time with a make up artist. I showed her a picture of Rihanna’s make up, I specified I hates eye liner – in picture looked like a smokey eye but apparently there was no smokey at all only eye liner ….. and that’s what she did …. I kept on telling her I want more of a smokey eye look, but she was too squared to understand that she can change the look from the picture and adapt it to my needs – it is pretty annoying, so I decided that I will never show a picture again also because sometimes what you see on someone else might not look as good on you (at least that’s how I fee) .. so I am just going to explain what I like/want with my own words hoping it will work out better.

Hi, I read your post and can relate. My first make up trial did not go the way I hoped as well. Here are a few suggestions I am doing: 1. Look at some local photographers blogs and see if you see brides with makeup you do like and try to get the name of that artist.
2. Ask friends or even strangers whom make up you like. I have gotten a good deal of referrals that way. Ladies that wear makeup everyday usually have good advice concerning.
3. Ask your photographer for some referrals. They work with MUA all the time. Mine referred me to some.
4. Lastly let them know before they begin how you feel, and your bad experiences. They should be willing to take their time and change or add anything you don’t like while they are doing it. Good luck!

I didn’t like any of my makeup trials, the hair would come out pretty good, but the makeup always looked funny. I ended up doing my own, even lost my deposit, after the MUA tried two times to do it normal….she just made all her brides look exactly the same and it was too much makeup on me so I did it myself and didn’t need the stress on my day, of worrying about how I would end up looking. I did research on YOU TUBE and was very pleased with my makeup job! If in doubt and you are running out of funds like I was, do it yourself!

If you really prefer the way you do your make-up, it’s not against the bridal rules to do it yourself. I am, because I can’t stand the way other people try to do it!

@ LadyJenn: It’s funny…I was just looking at your wedding photos on another post and considering using one as “inspiration” pic for my MUA. You did a beautiful job — I definitely assumed it was professionally done — and you were a stunning bride!

Oh wow thank you! I’m telling you start looking up you tube videos for wedding makeup…I got so many tips that way, and Kandee is the best! Even some younger girls on you tube totally are gorgeous and show you exactly how to get their look, it was so fun watching. I actually would take my laptop into the bathroom to practice doing what they suggested, especially with the eye makeup!

Give your MUA a ring and tell her what you feel. Maybe she’ll give you a free makeover given you will book with her or give you a discounted rate in the end?

I’m the same way…when pros do my make up, I hate it everytime! it’s almost like they are trying to make me look like a clown or something! i’m a simple girl, i don’t need and inch of makeup!
I’ll be doing my own.

I JUST got back from my hair/makeup trial. It looks really good in the pictures but in real life, my skin looks worse with makeup than without. I have really great skin naturally, no wrinkles, no pimples, just clear skin. But the foundation made me look like I have bumps and wrinkles!
I’m at a lost because in the pics, my skin looks flawless. Anyone else have this problem?
