As long as you got an official marriage certificate from the state, then you are legally married.

I was married in the Catholic church. I received a copy of my church marriage certificate (not a legal document) and the priest sent a copy of that as proof to the town. I then had to go to the town I was married in, pay $15 and receieve a copy of my state marriage certificate.

It’s probably just a New Jersey thing that they force you to go pick it up yourself…

Sounds like what you got in the mail was your state marriage certificate. 🙂

@JemmyGee:  I would definitely look into this.  I know in Franklin County in Ohio if you get your marriage license, have it signed by your officient, and it doesn’t get sent in it can actually be a misdemeanor!

Just go to your county clerk office and ask.  Unnerving, for sure, but the most straightforward way of finding out without a doubt is to ask your county clerk.

You should contact your county’s office of vital records. They will be able to tell you if your marrige license was filed.

@peasantsong:  +1 that is a great solution. If they say you are, then yay! If they say you’re not then you can take it from there

My ex-husband and I sent in our completed marriage license and never got the ceritificate from the county. When it was time to get divorced, we looked into whether we actually had to or not since our marriage apparently–which we verified–was never filed. We were told that if the ceremony was performed, we were legally wed, whether the paperwork was in order or not. We had to go, in person, to the court house in the county we married in (5 hours away) and pay for a new license, send it to the minister who married us, have him fill it out ex post facto, mail it in, and wait to get the certificate before we could proceed with our divorce.

So, yes, you are legally married, but you need to fix the paperwork error. You can probably just mail in the one you have. Also, be sure that is the original. I know my minister made us copies that he enclosed with the keepsake certificate before sending the actual one in.

@MrsSaltWaterTaffy:  She’d still legally be married even if the paper trail wasn’t there.

@JemmyGee:  Glad you have this sorted out now. That would be freaky. On the bright side if you weren’t legally married you could just go to the courthouse and do it quickly and easily.
