I posted about this recently… I bought a custom bolero (more of a jacket actually) from an ebay China seller. It is supposed to look like this:
But when I got it, the size is way off and all wrong and the sleeves are WAY too short. I paid $42 for it, and have not seen anything else like it anywhere (it’s a copy of a very pricey Aire Barcelona one)… aside from one OTHER knockoff site that had it for $90.
So, I’ve written the seller and have been given the following options.
- 1.) send it back for a full refund (not sure if they’re going to refund me MY return shipping cost though I believe they should)
- 2.) choose another bolero, keep the one I have (not that it benefits me), and pay nothing extra. This doesn’t seem like a good option though because I don’t trust them to make the next one fit, PLUS this bolero was more than most of the others they are selling so unless I got a refundAND a new one I’d just be overpaying for whatever I picked.
- 3) do nothing (don’t return bolero) and get a partial refund of $20
- 4) choose something else they have for sale instead of another jacket, like a petticoat. I’ve been planning on buying a new petticoat anyway. This is priced at $38 (bolero was $42)
I was at first going to just ask for a full refund and return the bolero. I don’t THINK a seamstress could make it fit… but maybe I should check first?
I am not confident in this seller now, not enough to ask for a re-do, and the other boleros they sell aren’t what I want anyway.
I am considering possibly using the “credit” for a petticoat. I don’t know if the one I am considering is that full or not though.
English is an issue in communicating with this seller so whatever I do I think I should keep it as simple as possible. So WWYD?
Here’s a pic of the petticoat I was considering. They also sell hooped versions but I really didn’t want one of those. Not even sure if this is an option with them but I asked and got a “maybe”, they want to know specifically which petticoat I would want before answering me.

Wow…. that bolero is not particularly complicated (construction-wise) so I dont blame you for not trusting them. I dont think I would try to order another jacket from them.
Is it too small?

@zippylef: Yeah the sleeves are too small at the ends, they end too high (above elbow instead of below), and the whole thing is too small across the shoulders… but fits in the bust, armseye, and bottom edge. Actually a little big on bottom and curls under in back as a result!!
I emaiiled them about a month before I ordered when I was researching, and specifically asked if they used a stretchy lace and they said yes. Well, the fabric WAS like what is pictured and the top layer was somewhat stretchy but the thing is they lined it with non-stretchy tulle so it made the stretch factor moot!
I was thinking a petticoat is less hard to screw up… ? I could just return it and be done with them, I don’t know. It’s a pain to mail stuff to China. 😉

File a dispute with PayPal saying that the item was received not as described. If this seller is not performing up to expectations, the longer you wait, the slimmer the chances that you will get your money back. Also, don’t leave feedback, until after you get your money back.

@MsInterpret: Well… if its an issue of the sleeves and shoulders and not the whole thing, a seamstress MAY be able to salvage something of the situation. Maybe take out the non-stretchy underlayer and replace it (or not replace it)? I think it would be worth a try to see what they say. In the meantime, I would either do as noritake said and dispute the charge or exchange for the petticoat. I agree that a petticoat is much harder to screw up.
With that fabric, I dont think it would be possible to lengthen the sleeves though, without it being super obvious.

@noritake22: True, I will do that.
@zippylef: Yeah I am just so bummed. I just tried it on again and it is the sleeves for the most part. The top shoulder tightness might be fixable but those sleeves are ridiculous and I GAVE them my bicep and armseye and all that in their measurement request form. Grrr.
I just wanted this bolero so badly. I wouldn’t mind if the sleeves were shorter. I wanted them either really short or below the elbow. I asked for it to be made like the pic, below the elbow. The way they made it, it comes right ABOVE the elbow and shuts off all circulation, lol. Plus it is covered in ugly cheap faux pearls on each of the flowers (which I could remove but still). Overall the construction’s just shoddy when you look close BUT if this had fit properly it would look okay, once the ugly faux pearls were off.
And yes, I think taking out the underlayer would help a LOT but I think in order to make the sleeves fit a seamstress would have to take off the lace trim on the edge of the sleeves too, since that’s also what is tight. And maybe the same with the top if it couldn’t be let out any.
I emailed them to see if they could make an extra full petticoat instead… so they’ve been quick about answering and hopefully that will help me decide.

Personally I would file a dispute. If you were to return it and get your money back you would not be refunded the return shipping costs so you would be out that money. Good luck!!

I am an avid ebay buyer and no the sellers will not refund the return shipping they claim that it is the buyers responsibility. If you decide to ship it back make sure it is insured since it goes to customs and many items get “lost.”
The bolero looks beautiful, whatever decision you make will be the correct one .

Thanks y’all. The return shipping thing makes me mad. When I was a seller (used to be a power seller and sold full time) I only took returns when I made an error in the description, BUT I always paid for the return shipping since it was my screwup. Just logical to me.
Anyway I am getting frustrated still trying to tell the seller what I want. I specifically mentioned their “hoopless” petticoat and tehy are sending me pics of a hooped one asking if it is okay. I wish I could send a message in Chinese!! I don’t trust the online translator things though.

Well, I have an update. After emailing back and forth with the seller about a possible petticoat, I asked if they had anything poufier than what’s in their ebay store but NO hoops and they sent me a pic of this:
So, I decided to take another chance and told them to go ahead and send me this in lieu of a refund or a jacket re-do.
They said they’d have it out today. So please, cross fingers for me that this works out! If so, it saves me a lot on what I’d planned to spend on a petticoat AND saves me from having to shop for one and all that.

i ordered one of ebay (i buy a lot from ebay and rarely get screwed) it was supposed to be dark ivory and look like an alfred angelo boloro…well what i got was banana yellow!!! and instead of fine lace it looked like my grandmother crocheted it…when i messaged them all they did was say sorry and refud it no questions asked and they didn’t want it back…
If you do decide to send it back aske them to reimburse your shipping b/c it was their fault they messed up threaten to take it up with paypal and leave bad feed back.
i hope it works out.

@jadebinkx: Thanks.. yeah… I’ve been buying on ebay for YEARS and selling too, never had problems. Well one, but out of all the transactions, one is no biggie.
I also bought a corset and it came yesterday from Hong Kong… gorgeous but way too small despite following their size chart. The annoying thing is, the return shipping would cost me almost as much as just buying another in a larger size!! So that’s what I did. Then I’ll just sell the too-small one.
I have generally not been a fan of buying from Hong Kong or China because my son does that and always has problems, but I gave in to stuff that is SOOO cheap. I’m learning a bit about “if it looks too good to be true”, I guess.
