So my fiance and I met while I spent a year living in New York. I had informed him after a couple months of dating that I’d planned to move back home after a year, and I figured it would have been a casual dating fling because he wouldn’t want to leave NY…well I was wrong haha.
anyway, he moved here now, and we’re about 7 weeks out from the wedding. Since neither he nor I have never lived alone, we have nothing for our house – thank God for registries – however he has nothing now and he’s living in an apartment here, just moved in three weeks ago. We’ve mostly been eating dinner at my parents house to save money, and since we have no cookware.
anyway… I was wondering if it’s really true that we can’t use our shower gifts til we’re married? and what’s the reason behind that anyway? We kind of need to and waiting another 7 weeks of not being able to cook would be pretty difficult.

It is just an old wives tale that you can’t use things before the wedding. Basically, the reason for it is in case the wedding is cancelled, then you can return everyone’s unused gifts to them.

well… my thinking is, he just moved 1300 miles to be with me – to “no mans land” and a place where he knows no one except my family… pretty sure we’ll go through with the wedding 😉
but do people really hold to that still?

I personally think it’s a little tacky to go ahead and start using your wedding gifts before you’re married. And yes, it’s in case the wedding is canceled. I don’t know, call me old fashioned and traditional. However, I do think there are certain circumstances and exceptions and I don’t see a problem with yall since you aren’t too far from the wedding and literally have nothing and need them. I don’t think anyone would mind if they knew.

We used some of our stuff before the wedding. Not everything because we wanted to keep some stuff boxed since we were moving and it would be safer that way.

well we are doing this, but only because we will be moving right before or right after the wedding. so i feel like they will be just ine in my extra bedroom & at my parents house for an extra month
although its hard looking at al those pretty things and not being sad that i cant use them til may!!

My shower is on Saturday, and I’m super excited… but yeah I don’t know what to do… I mean we can make it another two months, haha, but it’s silly cause the stuff he needs nows is stuff on the registry, so I don’t wanna buy it now, you know?

Well maybe it’s tacky, but we have been using our wedding shower gifts for a week or so now… Because we live in a little condo we don’t have a lot of extra space for all of the boxes… so we immediately unpacked everything and put it to use… and come on now… this wedding is happening… no question in our minds…

if someone sends u a gift, use it! It’ll be a good way to get a head start on your thank you notes anyway.

There was a post like this recently. I will be using my gifts for sure!

haha I’m actually surprised at the number of you who’ve said you’re using them before the wedding. Makes me feel a little better – and yes get the shower notes out of the way 🙂

When I first moved in with my now husband, he had a cheap cookware set that he had barely used (I do mean BARELY) and so I just started using it cause we had to eat!
When I had my bridal showers (Yes, I had 2) I got a complete cookware set. It was so much nicer and well made. I started using it right away and found out I loved it! I’ve still got the old set but they are boxed up!
