Well that makes sense!! I wish I could look forward to that - Cam's sub-contracted so he'll OWE money come tax season! But it totally makes sense - most people use their tax return to buy big things ... and why not an engagement ring?
yeah i think that makes sense...tax returns are awesome, and i think guys like to squirrel it away, or use it towards buying big things, and i hope in your case, it's a sparly! i think my BF can afford to shell out for my ring in the nexxt month or two, given the budget i gave him.... if i get a ring after my 30th (which is in mid March), i might be very very sad!!!
yeppers that's why i am thinking valentine's day is a big proposal day lol!!!
i actually pay more tax every month than i have to so come tax time i have a extra nice return to splurge on.
I think tax season is often overlooked for proposals. We come out of the holidays and start dreaming of Valentines, warmer weather and paid vacation. A fat tax return isn't always counted on and it gives some the nice financial boost needed for the e-ring. I like to file and forget so the money feels like a windfall, but it might be best that this season remain overlooked. I can imagine asking if the bf filed his taxes yet and trying to estimate when a proposal might happen based on his file date--and don't let the gov't be slow on that return and I'm sitting around dreaming of a ring.
I thought I was getting a tax return proposal last year.... but the return wasn't as much as we had hoped and so I had to wait (some more) until August!
Hehe no... but I did get a salary bonus proposal! He got his in Sept, and we got engaged Sept 19th. Poor boy, he worked hard all year and then had to spend all his reward to get me! He doesn't seem to mind, thankfully :P
We are both super cheap, and don't really spend that much (our biggest expense is at the grocery store when we go "crazy" and buy lots of produce haha) so with a little extra help from returns some bling will hopefully come into my life! Plus, he bought his first house and gets the $8,000 back for that... I'm thinking home improvement/honeymoon fund?!?
Miss Velveteen- I think a bonus proposal is just as great!
Eloping- that is very smart!
I'm in the same position! My bf and I chatted last night and he said depending on what his return is he will start ring shopping. He said hopefully we'll be engaged sometime between summer and the end of this year. Our 4 yr anniversary is in July and we have a tentative trip to VA this summer too...maybe then!? YAY for tax returns!
I am actually slightly hoping to have a tax return proposal. lol... Once he gets the money (he usually gets a good amount) it'll be easy to buy something nice... say a ring. lol...
I was wondering about this a few days ago..BF should be getting at least around $1000 back. It would be wonderful it he could put that towards the ring account we agreed he should open, but he desperately needs a new laptop so I'm positive that is where most of it will go..the other half will probably end up going to bills :((
We have my 2 wedding bands on lay-a-way at the jewelry store where my engagement ring was purchased! I can not wait until my fiance gets his return so we can go get my rings! I can not wait to see what they will look like all together!
<raises hand>
Me, I did! There were several other factors contributing to when he proposed, but that is exactly how he payed off the ring. One plus to owning a house- really good tax return!
This year it will be a tax return honeymoon! Just last night we were talking about how lucky I am this year and last year to benefit from the returns.
I had a tax return proposal! I remember being so pissed off, too, because he told me he had all that money in his savings account. I asked him what he was going to do with it, and he said, "Save it." I was furious! And then he didn't save it at all :) Tricky boy. Frankly, I didn't care when the damn proposal came - holiday season, V-day, birthday, any day, whatever. But tax returns are a nice windfall to go from!
I just saw a commercial where the folks are talking about how they want/need items before the return shows up, so they go to this tax place and get their refund sooner. One line was "what if I need a big screen before the big game?" with this poor guy hitting his tiny screen to try and get the picture to stop shaking. Dunno why HR Block doesn't jump on the tax-rebate proposal thing in their advertisements.
haha so coincidentally this convo came up tonight between me and BF. He asked me what I was going to do with my return, I just said idk because honestly idk lol..probably use it to get some dental work done
.I suggested he get a laptop with his..and he agreed..when I asked what he was going to do with the rest he said he was going to save it..good boy! Hopefully the remainder will be making its way into his NEW savings account ;)
Haha we had one of those!! The fella and I were both students and he had to wait til he got his tax return to propose so he could afford a ring. In the end we got a gorgeous ring that we could afford - what we could afford then and what we can afford are two totally different things seeing as I've graduated but I love my "student" ring and wouldn't change it for anything!!
Hi! im new to posting here, although i have been stalking for quite a while :) but when i saw this thread i knew i had to post a response! My boyfriend and I have been tlaking about engagement for quite some time and have been ring shopping many times, even found the one i love and Im pretty sure is going to be the one he gets, we have even set a tentative date for the wedding next year. Over the Holidays i was out of town visiting his mother with him and on New Years Eve he told me " i know one thing that will happen to you in 2010, you will get engaged" of course this got me excited. the next day when he thought i was in the shower i overheard him talking to his mom about how as soon as he gets his tax return he will have enough money and will be buying my ring!!!! so naturally im very very excited. hes not so good at hiding things and keeps hinting that "february will be a really good month" for me. so fingers crossed for my tax return proposal! :)
omg Corgi - that's hilarious!! true that!
I got my ring right after he got his tax return. What's better to spend your return on? ;) hehe
Fingers Crossed for a Tax return Proposal!! I know he hinted that it should be before the end of March but His birthday is in March so im just wondering if he does get enough money if he will do it before of after his birthday!! really excited
It's definitely a finance thing. We've been in some tough financial straits lately (who hasn't?) and I'm still a full-time student (ah, grad school) only working part-time, so an engagement ring and the kind of wedding we would want (i.e. ANYTHING beyond a quick JP ceremony at city hall) is completely out of reach right now. BUT MNbf has a big job interview today, and if he got this new job, that would definitely impact his financial status in a big way. MNbf is very traditional in certain ways and I know that he would not propose without a ring, and he is not in any kind of position to buy one currently. And I can't help wondering (oh so selfishly, I feel awful) if maybe that's a bigger hindrance to being engaged than even I realized and maybe if he gets the job it might be coming 'round the bend. I really want him to get the job 97% because it would make him really happy and 3% because...I'm a waiting bee. :-)
So glad he doesn't know I'm on here -- so glad I can vent to you ladies.
You know, if I were to expect one, it would be after tax returns. He said a month or two ago "fiancee... after I'm done saving."
He said for working less than a year, he got a little less than 10k back, so he's hoping that trend will continue.
Then there's the mortgage and student loans, and the first time homebuyer thing. So he's said he's hoping for maybe around 18k back. I was super tempted to suggest "married and having a dependent = another deduction...", but I decided against it.
I have no clue how much he is saving, I hope it isn't some absurd amount.
Speaking of which, he asked me to go scrounge up any necessary tax papers. Thanks for reminding me!
I'll get a pretty good check back (1200 or so) but he'll end up owing so... yeah, that won't happen. But the CD he's using matures in... whoa, tomorrow. That's kinda weird! So yeah.
I was thinking about that after he pinky promised I would have a ring before October 1... I was thinking he may make the deadline farther so I don't expect it anytime soon. But we were first time home buyers this year so hopefully we'll be getting some good returns!
Ooo oooo OOO! I want one! I want a tax return proposal lol
My SO was incredibly antsy about filing his taxes. I thought that the same type of thing might be possible for me too! But I once told him that I wouldn't marry someone who's in any debt. So the money could be going towards paying off his truck. lol We'll see. I'd love to thank Uncle Sam for a nice big e-ring!

So, I was reading posts about Valentine's day proposals, and was wondering if anyone was expecting a tax season proposal? Crazy, I know, but I think that's what I am getting... My bf basically said he'd propose as soon as he has enough money to get a nice ring. He also said that after he gets his tax return he will have quite a bit of extra money in his checking account that will go towards a "big purchase". So, some may call it a springtime proposal, but really, I am thinking Uncle Sam is going to help my boy out and lead to a tax return proposal...
