I think I have picked my dress, and it is not a traditional wedding dress, and not even white-which was not what I was expecting. But somehow, this dress seems to fit everything I am looking for. I am having an art deco theme wedding, and it perfectly fits my venue, and the 30's look I was going for. I didn't want anything with a train, and when I saw this dress I loved it on sight. So this is my non-traditional, but perfect for me, dress:
I am getting married for the 1st time and not wearing a traditional dress. Mine is considered a wedding 'alternative' dress. It's ivory, has crystal beading, lacks a train, and has absolutely no puff. It is something I can likely wear again if I want.
I think that for some people (myself included), the traditional wedding dresses just doesn't fit our personalities! I ended up with a satin dress from BCBG - no train, no puff, no bussle, not strapless - and I love it! I say go for whatever suits your personality and budget!
@SandyThePoet: Wow that is a gorgeous dress!
Beautiful dress - SandyThePoet!
I wanted to post pics but I couldn't find any on the internet. I can take pics of them hanging on their hangers when I get home from work. I'd love to see pics of your dresses!
And... what do you think about various colors? I bought the ivory dress first knowing I absolutely didn't want white. But... now I'm thinking I love the gold even more. (I didn't plan on gold. I just found it in my size on a clearance rack. lol!)
I found both of my dresses online.
First the ivory (which has gold detail but actually looks more ivory than gold in reality) then the gold.

@SandyThePoet: That was a dress I was considering when I first started looking! My ERing is an antique from the 20's, so I was looking at vintage and vintage style dresses from that era a lot. That site has so many cute options. I wound up going a more traditional route with an actual bridal dress with a 50's vibe in the end.
@2ndtime: I ordered Alfred Angelo 7016 in Ivory. After tax and rush shipping it was $194. :)
Have you checked the department store websites? I like them because you can always take the dresses back if they don't work. I ended up getting married in a dress that I bought for $90 from Macys. It was going to be my TTD dress because I had a traditional wedding dress that I bought from a local bridal salon, Curvaceous Couture. It was beautiful, but was ruined by my seamstress, Diana Adams from marylandseamstress.com. I have a review on the site--the whole experience was pretty tramautic. Despite the troubles with my wedding dress, the TTD dress that I bought was beautiful and ended up looking wonderful at my wedding! I'm sure you'll find someone beautiful that you will really love!

Nope, not wearing a traditional dress. Found one I loved, though, lol.
Mine was one from a chinese wedding store that was listed as wedding/evening gown/prom (i think) and has a VERY small train (puddle train?) and is definitely NOT weddingly! LOL!
@2ndtime: emmmmm.... I guess. I'm not sure exactly how it's gonna look when I get it in, so yeah. But no telling anyone!!!! LOL!

I bought the ivory sheath dress with bolero jacket last summer off the clearance rack at Dillard's for $38 (marked down from $168). I bought the gold cocktail dress from Nordstrom Rack last Sunday for $75 (marked down from $300).
Wow! Very sexy! I like it! Do you think you would wear it again? Or... would you box it and save it like many women do with their wedding dresses.
@2ndtime: Thanks!!
box it up? are you KIDDING ME?!?! lol. Definitely gonna be wearing it again... and again... and again... lol. It'll probably be the new "go to" for fancy dresses.
IF it looks as good when I get it as it does in the photo. I have my doubts, since it took badgering them and opening an eBay complaint just to get it sent!!!
I hope it all works out and you get to wear the dress again and again and again.
I'm already thinking I can wear the gold dress I've showed you guys during my honeymoon.
@2ndtime: I'm sure you could wear both many times!
We get invites to fancy-ish parties/events off and on, so it's gonna be fun wearing the dress again, especially since the people who will be at the wedding, will more often than not, be at the events!
Plus, my FI and I occassionally will have a "day out" where we go to Richmond and have fun walking around the mall, eating at a nice restaurant, going to the movies, etc, all dressed up.
I love this thread! I'm not planning on doing the traditional wedding dress either. I have a silver art deco style dress, or a vintage lace gown I got on ebay.
I probably won't. I'm going to go and try a ton of dresses on to get a feel for what style/shape looks best but since I want a grey dress I'll probably end up ordering a formal dress online.
@Gingersnap: Smart thinking! I do that too. (Try things on in stores then order online if the price is cheaper.)
@SandyThePoet: My wedding dress was by Nataya too! Now I am hooked on her dresses and I have three of them!

Is anyone out there wearing something other than a traditional wedding dress?
We have both been married before and we're getting married in our home with family and close friends in attendance. I bought a couple of dresses, one ivory sheath dress with a bolero jacket and one gold cocktail dress. I'm a clearance rack shopper and got two great deals. I'm not sure which one I'm going to actually wear. Neither is a wedding dress and both can be worn for other occasions. Is there anyone else out there who loves dresses but isn't doing the traditional wedding dress thing?
