Hi, Baltimore here! Just got engaged earlier this month, not planning on having the wedding til 2010, and you are SO right...I'm having the hardest time finding a location. I want something different/interesting, but inexpensive since we're paying for the whole thing.
Our venue is Thorpe Wood - located in Cunningham Falls State Park - DEEP in the Catoctin Mountains! I LOVE IT!!!! it's in Thurmont, not Baltimore but we live in Frederick!
.
Thorpe Wood is AMAZING! It's a Green facility and in the mountains. There are about 5-6 outdoor locations for the ceremony and the "lodge" for the reception is AMAZING as well. The staff is great and will do anything you ask. The biggest plus of all is that the rental fee thing is CHEAP!!
I just got engaged a week ago! We are getting married in October 2009 though, so we're really stepping up our venue search. We're having a really hard time finding a site that's affordable and has everything we want, but hopefully something will turn up!
Hello!! I'm thrilled to see other b-more brides too! We are getting married in May at the beautiful Evergreen Mansion, which is next to Loyola College. It was a little pricer than we wanted, but there's a decent discount for those affiliated with Johns Hopkins. It was my dream to get married in a garden, and the Carriage House is a perfect size and style for our wedding. We looked at a lot of places though, and some I would have loved if our guest list was going to be under 150. We considered the Maryland Zoo, American Visionary Arts Musem, Fredrick Douglass/Issac Meyers Maritime Park and Chase Court. For those still searching, I can offer the venues I thought that were cool but too small for us: the Elm in Hampden (my friend got married there) or the Corradetti Glass Studio in Woodberry. If anyone wants any dish on our visits feel free to pm me.
Yay for the Elm! I used to live in Hampden- really I lived in Woodberry, but no one ever knows where that is (except for maybe you cherrytomato1!)...
Congrats Erisque!
and cherrytomato1 here is a gorgeous Evergreen house wedding that I droll over from time to time:

Yay Baltimore brides! Our wedding is at Oxon Hill Manor, in Oxon Hill, Maryland....probably closer to D.C. than Baltimore but we live in Laurel. Nevermind your venue who is doing your hair/make-up!?
no ide, any suggestions? I was thinking up do's for i do's or Nicole Palermo; what about you guys?
Hi fellow Baltimore brides. My wedding is in September 2009 and we are planning an outdoor ceremony and reception at Waverly Mansion. Since it is owned by Parks and Rec, the site fee was reasonable. The only downside is that the extra rental fees of table/chairs/linens/etc. can add up... something to keep in mind. My friend recently married at Brookside Gardens and it was a beautiful option without the hefty pricetag.
Hey fellow Bmore Brides!!
Well technically I live in Pasadena, about 20 mins outside Bmore, but who's counting?? I'm getting married October this year and STILL have not found the right venue :(
I love Celebrations at the Bay, but at $125 pp plus rental fee, its just too expensive. Any help from other budget friendly brides would be great!!
Hello Bmore ladies :-D
This is my first post on here, and i'm excited to find positive brides... the "knotties" were getting me. Not all of them, just some.
Anyways, the first place I looked at in the city was the American Visionary Art Museum, it is a beautful place, but didn't work for our season and for the ceremony you can't really have a lot of people and they have to stand.
The perfect place I settled on, while I wanted one in the city, was Celebrations at the Bay in Pasadena. Its on the water and is lovely. The owners are MAGNIFICENT (though we'll see how I feel after my wedding, 1/31/08.) They really listened to us, and worked with out budget, even though the price still ended up a little high. They definitely don't have that "you do things our way" vibe. I feel its going to be worth it.
I thought it wouldn't be a plus that they do the catering there, like it would hinder my choices, but their food is excellent, and we still got the style of food we wanted. I'm really excited, only a couple of weeks to go!
Other places I looked at and liked in Baltimore: Chase Court.
Mrs Sl82be: There's another place, right down the street from where I'm getting marrried that is a little less expensive I think, Kurtz Beach. A friend got married there and it was a very nice wedding.
There is also a beautiful!, but way to expensive place in PG called the Newton White Mansion. I didn't even go see it b/c it has a $5000 rental fee. Probably not even worth mentioning lol... but oh well.
Baltimore has a lot to offer wedding-site wise.
I'm a Baltimore bride! Well sort of, I'm from Columbia.
I'm newly engaged, so we're just looking into venues and I'm finding it a bit overwhelming. I'm disappointed to hear Newton White is so expensive. I loved the way it looked online and I was trying to make an appointment to go see it soon. I'd love to get married at a mansion or historic building but my guest list is reaching 200+ and most mansions can't handle that many people.
Anyone heard anything about the Mansion at Valley Country Club?
Harford County bride here. I live in Arlington, VA and am getting married at Liriodendron in Bel Air. Depending on when you're getting married, the location fee runs from about $800-$2,000. They also rent Chivar chairs for cheaper than most places too!
Sadly, I think the max number it can accomodate is 125, though.
Federal Hill Bride! (Literally. That's where we got engaged :-D. On Sunday. So I don't have a venue yet.) Has anybody looked at pricing for either the zoo or the aquarium? I suspect they will be expensive...
Congrats, edb! We live in Federal Hill =) I looked briefly at the aquarium as a venue, but didn't get pricing. You have to use a specific caterer and the website also mentions something about a preferred wine, and events need to end by 11pm - so it just seemed like a ton of restrictions. Good luck with your search!
@MissLucky - I'm planning on having my reception at Valley Country Club in May 2010. I've visited twice, and it seems like the most affordable place that I could find that wasn't a reception hall or a place like Martin's. I'm not sure what the max number is for VCC, but I know that on Saturday nights the min. is 150, so you might be ok. I wanted to hold the ceremony there but I wasn't impressed with the view - basically a big white fence and a swimming pool - for the ceremony. So the ceremony will be at my church.
I also looked at Waverly Mansion in HoCo and Vandiver Inn in Havre de Grace in person, as well as a million other places online. I'd be happy to give more info if anyone is interested!
Thanks for the info LT1982! I visited the mansion last week. It seems nice and can hold plenty of people. I'm going to try to cut down the guest list, which would make it more comfortable (and affordable).
edb - Congratulations! That's where I got engaged too.
edb - I looked briefly at the aquarium, but there were lots of restrictions and it didn't get very good reviews on WeddingWire (evidently a lot of exhibits are dark if you have your wedding in the evening, so you can't see a lot of the animals), so I crossed it off the list. I do have info on the Science Center though, if you're interested in that.
We just booked our venue! We're getting married at the lovely Cloisters Castle in Lutherville. So, now I am officially a Baltimore bride!
Hello all! edb, my finance and I considered the zoo. The price wasn't too bad, in 2008 it was around $2300 and i <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic">think that may have even included the ceremony site and tables and chairs for the reception. You should look for yourself if you're interested, but we were a little concerned about the layout...its almost a square doughnut so not everyone is together all the time. Also, from someone who got married there, it sounds like a DOC is a good idea. There's also no A/C, so it would be better for a spring of fall wedding. Good luck!
I was married in Oct 2007 at The Grand Lodge in Hunt Valley, MD, just north of the city. We had over 240 guests and were having a kosher wedding, so that eliminated the majority of venues in Baltimore. We didn't want to do the standard hotel wedding, we wanted something unique. The Grand Lodge was stunning. Lot's of outdoor areas to do photos, and the ceremony room is breathtaking.

Oh I so wanted to have my wedding at the Grand Lodge, but they were already booked for September 2010! I was completely thrown for a loop since I thought I had plenty of time to find a place.
I am a Baltimore Bride!!!! Thank you to whom ever posted the Grand Lodge photos, they are beautiful. I had never thought about this place. Does anyone know where I can find the contact info.
Dearest Baltimore Brides,
Thank you for all your suggestions and keep them coming!!! I am moving to Baltimore in a month and the wedding is in four. Can't wait but we still need a place to eat and dance:) Our ceremony is at Loyola College and all but 1 of our guests lives out of town. We are looking for a brunch/lunch reception for 150 on a small but honest budget. Air conditioning is a must. Someone tried to book me without mentioning that small detail.
If anyone needs gown ideas or has questions..that is what I do. I worked for a designer for three years and now I am in Atlanta working a boutique. I also rework gowns so if you are in love with your mother or grandmother's dress and need suggestions, I would love to help.
I know this thread is pretty old but I'm a Baltimore bride who just started reading WeddingBee, and I love all the great ideas! Miss D'Orsay - I live in Woodberry too! And we're using Rev. Laura for our officiant (saw your post on that the other day) :) Even though my fiance and I live in Baltimore city, we're getting married on the Eastern Shore -- we really wanted to be on the water, and it's so beautiful out there we couldn't resist. Anyone have any bakery suggestions for cakes?
I'm not a bride, but I'm a bridesmaid in a wedding next summer in the Baltimore area! The reception is at the Sheraton in Columbia, and apparently they offer pretty good wedding packages. My friend is looking for somewhere to hold the rehearsal dinner...any suggestions in that area?
@Miss Calculator: If you're looking for something close to the Sheraton, maybe Clyde's (http://www.clydes.com/main/RestaurantsDetail.cfm?Restaurant=Clydes_of_Columbia&Section=Main) or Sushi Sono (http://www.sushisonomd.com/)? I'd personally avoid That's Amore - I haven't had great experiences there, and according to the reviews on yelp.com, I'm not the only one.
I'm not a Baltimore Bride, but my parents grew up there, and I just want to say - GO Os and yummy yummy crabcakes :)
I am a MD native.........my best friend got married in Baltimore at the Peabody Library (in Mt. Vernon part of town) and it was the most gorgeous wedding I have ever attended. There are great places outside for pictures (a cool fountain and grass area) and the inside is beyond breathtaking. I'm a B'More Bride who's getting married in Ocean City on May 15th, 2010. For what I wanted...Baltimore just proved too expensive...so I'm getting married with my toes in the sand and the waves crashing behind me!!
I've been to two weddings in Baltimore on the recent past...the first was on the Black Eyed Susan in the Inner Harbor...which was different than any wedding I've been to, and they had the after party right in Fells at Slainte. http://www.baltimorepaddlewheel.com/weddings.html
The second had their reception at the Glass Pavillion on JHU's campus...which was actually really neat...and I never knew was there. Here's contact info:

I'm a DC/MD bride getting married 10.10.10 at Musket Ridge Golf Club near Frederick/Hagerstown.
Just sayin' hi!
I'm not getting married in Baltimore but I'm moving there right after the wedding - hi all!
I'm a Baltimore bride too! My fiance and I live in Federal Hill and we're having our wedding at the B&O restaurant/Hotel Monaco that just opened on Charles St. I HIGHLY recommend this venue to anyone still looking! They have some great incentive packages at the moment and have been super easy to work with so far!
I'm just fully reading this (old) thread for the first time. I'm so glad to hear that I'm not the only one to have trouble with the elusive venue search. Thanks for all the input!

I know this because you commented! Go crabcakes and orioles! and the Domino Sugar Factory, and the Natty Boh sign in Canton..and and and...
So I'm curious, because honestly, the venue was the hardest thing for me to find and what ultimately took my saucy city wedding to the suburbs.
Where/what is your venue?
