I am so happy I finally decided to stop thinking I was a bad-a and took out all of my "weird" piercings. I know that a lot of people loved them, and I loved all the compliments I got...but DANNNNG, I lost a lot of sleep from all of that metal! I had a LOT...but as of yesterday, all are gone, save for my regular ol' ear piercings and my bellybutton (cause FI loves that one ;) )

YIPPEE!! Maybe I'll post some pics so you can all see how crazy they looked.

I had 3 holes on the lobes of each of my ears.  I haven't worn earrings in the last 2 holes for years now but they are still visible.  I don't know if the holes ever completely heal up.

That's a lot of earrings, girl! I can barely manage to remember to put on one pair:-]] Take care of those holes so they heal up nicely! It's going to be a big change for you, I'm sure. You'll be reaching for those earrings for a while!

Oh girl, that's not bad! I was expecting you to have eyebrow rings, and lip rings and all sorts of things after reading your post! LOL Wink

I got my eyebrow pierced in my senior year of high school ('99) and took it out about 5 years ago. You can still see the hole!! At least you girls with holes still showing in yours ears can hide those pretty well! LOL

Funny too, because sometimes people that I've known for years finally notice the hole and it really freaks them out. Especially at my very corporate job! haha

Wow lady! I have a belly one, but the idea of taking it out makes me feel like i'll have  "wound" in my belly. Guess that one will stay until I'm preggers! is there anything special to do to help heal those holes?

I got rid of my nose and cartilage, but kept my reg ears and that little inner part that sticks out from your head into your ear? Your second pic has one right above it. But, it is so weird when you take them out!!!! Glad I did now though, and don't think i'd ever put them back!

I let my 2nd and 3rd holes in my ears close up a few years ago when I graduated college.  There just didn't seem to be a point anymore.

Word to the wise for women (like myself) who have belly button piercings.  Unless you let your piercing eventually grow/fall out, you WILL have a scar no matter what.   My friend took hers out years ago and still has a scar.

I'm leaving mine in until it falls out eventually.  But I have tattoos and such so that's not so strange for me ;o)

    Rosiegirl: That's called your tragus.

Firemanslady: I totally know what you mean....when I finally took out my 'crazy' piercings a few years ago I felt like I was finally letting go of the rebellious 18 year old who got them all....it was a relief, but for the longest time I felt kind of sad about it because they had been such a part of who I was for a long time.

The funniest part:  my husband (fiance at the time) had loved the nipple piercings, but when I took them out he was like 'normal nipples are so much better' hahaha.  If he had told me that from the get go I would have taken those pain in the @ss things out LONG before I did!!

Yeah those piercings aren't that bad but congrats on de-metaling yourself. ;)

I have taken out my nose ring, tongue ring, and belly button ring in the last 4 years or so.

And hotchild is right, the longer you have your belly ring in, the less it's going to heal/close up. I had mine in for about 8 years and I took it out about 2 years ago but the hole as never closed up. :P

I still have my crazy side ear piercing, lol. They're teeny tiny 1/6 carat diamonds though....i'm still feeling a lil rebellious

@Hotchild, how long does it take for a naval piercing to naturally grow its way out? Mine's definitely grown crooked over the years

@EJS: I think it's different for individual people.  Mine is starting to look really thin...so maybe a couple more years...?  I've had it in for 6 already.

Hm, interesting. I've had mine for 4 years....I definitely wasn't planning on keeping it after i had a baby or anything (you know, those stretcher plastic inserts). I just figured it'd be a thing of my past to remind me of my "i'm gonna do it!" stage =]

@hotchild: Mine was in for 8 and that's why I took it out, it was getting so thin I was afraid that the next time it got caught on a sweater or something, it wouldn't be there anymore.

@hcritton, ew, that made me shiver a little uncomfortably at the idea of it tearing out.

@EJS: Yeah, it's good for looking cute in a bikini and that's about it.  I still like it and everything, but I'm definitely getting a little old to care about it.  I can't even tell you what color ring is in it right now ;oP  I moved on from [temporary] piercings to [permanent] tattoos - smart!

@hcritton: Yeah, I'm hoping it eventually just "falls out" through my skin.  I've been told that can happen and then you have no scar.  Let's hope I don't run out of patience before then!

@ejs: Yeah I thought I'd take it out on my own terms :P

@hotchild: so you leave it in long enough for the skin to thin until it "falls out"? I have never heard of that before.

@hcritton: That's the plan.  One of my friends did it with her eyebrow ring, and voila, no scar!

@hcritton: yeah! belly button rings are surface piercings. EVENTUALLY they will ALL reject. even if you have them for years and years. That's what happened to my anti-tragus (see 2nd picture, looks like a 3rd lobe piercing with the other end of it coming out the top!) and owie, did it hurt! Eventually decided it had totally rejected after a week of riding roller coasters. x(

I know my piercings aren't THAT crazy, but I do live in a super conservative family and always had to take them out at family gatherings. I think that's why I felt so rebellious about them. Haha! But FI just told me how much prettier I look without all those "flagpoles" in my ears. Um, hello, Fireman, thanks for telling me that WHEN WE FIRST MET?! I would have taken them about forever ago!!! :)

And as far as healing up all of those holes go, they really aren't that bad. All of those piercings I got "strategically," if you will, because of my major in broadcast journalism. You can't tell I had any of them anymore, unless you like, look down in my ear. The rejected anti-tragus did kind of booger up my ear for a while, and I guess it's still a little different looking than the other side. And once a long time ago I stretched my cartilage, so it's not "perfect" like the other ear anymore, either. Oh well......! I had my fun. :)

I always wanted a second piercing (2 on each ear) but as a younger girl my dad would not let me! Now that I can, I still want to, but not so badly that I have to do it.  I don't think my dad would still like it though...lol

The night I had my interview for my first job in Korea, I took out my eye brow piercing.  I knew that they would make me take it out my first day of work, so I decided to do it before I got there.  It was so so so so so so so so sad.  I had had it for 6 years, and there were a lot of people who had never seen me without my piercing.  It felt like I was losing a big part of my identity, but now it's normal not to wear it.

I used to have a total of 9 holes in my ears, but now I wear only the bottom piercing (one earring in each ear).  The scars are definitely visible :(  It bumms me out and makes me wish I'd been a little bit smarter as an 18 year old.

I had 10 holes in my ears but now I just have 2 in each ear. I still have scars, too but they aren't too noticeable so I don't mind that much. Nobody can tell unless they look really closely at my ears. And I took my belly button ring out a few years ago and still have a scar. I had some other piercings but took them out, as well, and they didn't leave any scars.

haha that is kind of exciting! I took my belly button ring out a few months ago and it was kind of a big moment for me. (Actually wrote a blog post about it: http://fifteenminuteplan.wordpress.com/2009/08/17/milestone-moment/)

I used to have 2nd holes in my ears but I let those go years ago. I still have my nose piercing. Funny because when FI and I first started dating he was a little skeptical of it bc he is so conservative and I'm.... not so much. When I took out the belly button ring I asked FI if he thought it was time I lose the nose piercing as well-- considering that I have to take it in and out all the time for work whenever I go to court or meet with an older client, etc. He told me no way! he loves it and it isn't time yet. :) I think I want to leave it in until I get married because I'd love to have it in my wedding photos... and after that I may have to say goodbye-- but gosh that is going to be hard!

I've taken out all piercings besides my 1 piercing per ear...my navel ring hole is STILL not healed more than a year (maybe 2) later, though...ack...anyone have this issues?  I'm seriously wondering if I need to get it stitched closed, lol.

I'm in the process of taking them all out too.  I took the tongue ring out years and years ago.  I had like 10 holes in my ear but I got bored of those very quickly.  I still have two holes in one and 3 in the other but I never use them.  And I still have the belly ring but that's kinda phasing out too.  Especially considering we're going to try to get pregnant this time next year.  I don't think a big round belly and a piercing just trying to hold on is that attractive, at least on me!  And, there are a couple others (I was a wild child) that I'm phasing out as well.  Its tough though, its like we're growing up or something.... scaaaaaaary.

Hmm, I have an appt with my plastic surgeon in a couple weeks, maybe I should ask him about my belly button ring hole and if there's anything I can do to get it to close up.

I have a plastic surgeon for medical reasons, not cosmetic. Don't judge, LOL ;)

I have seven piercings total - 2 in each lobe, helix (upper ear cartilege), nose, and navel.  My nose is def my favorite piercing and I feel naked without it!  I've been thinking recently about getting another piercing but am not sure what it would be...

As for getting rid of piercings... My helix piercing hurt like hell when it was healing so I won't give that one up without a fight.  My navel... eh, I can take it or leave it - I loved it when I got it done but now I just forget it's there.  I never show it off because I've gained weight and am not comfortable showing my stomach anymore.  Sometimes I think about taking it out but I don't want to end up with just a hole like some of you ladies have talked about.
