Becaues of conversations I knew my MIL was buying the crib and my mom the dresser so I didnt have to wait for the shower. They just purchased what I wanted when I was ready.

As you discuss the nursery with your family they will let you know if they want to purchase it for you, but I wouldnt necessarily plan on them wanting to buy you the furniture.  I wouldnt hold off on buying it though because many showers are close to your due date.

@hoogirl05:  We’ve pretty much had it in our minds that we’ll be buying all the big stuff. My brother is giving us his crib, but we bought the changing table and comfy chair. I don’t think we’ll be buying any more furniture. My shower is only 6 weeks before my due date, so I wouldn’t feel comfortable waiting until after then to order, have it delivered, and set it up. But, if you know you have family or friends who want to buy you big ticket items, I think it’s okay to ask for the furniture ahead of time.

My SIL waited until the last minute, and really regretted it because putting all the furniture together after the baby arrived and everyone was frazzled and sleep deprived was no fun! My coworker just gave birth 3 months early and had not started buying stuff – hadn’t even had her shower yet! And it’s been awful for them to get everything together with all the time they are spending at the hospital with their little one. I expect since i’ve witnessed some “worst case scenarios” i’ll likely put things together on the early side….just in case.

I’m in the same boat as you, OP. We have a pack n play with a bassinet attachment and we’re keeping that in our room when the baby comes. We were originally going to buy our crib early but the one we want sold out. So it took us a while to research another one we like. So now we decided to either wait until a good sale comes and/or wait until our shower (in case we get gift cards). Whichever comes first.

We’re moving when the baby is about 5-6 months old so we are waiting to buy baby furniture until after we move. He will be living in a pack and play in our bedroom until then. That was set up in Aug. and I’m due in Nov.

Put it on your registry!! A lot of places (like Target) will give you the 10% off coupon code to use on registry items not purchased.  So, my answer would be to wait until after the shower (when the code is valid).  Just schedule your baby showers early enough and save yourself some money, girl! 🙂

We were lucky, our parents bought us the crib and changing table so we registered for the ones we wanted and they purchased them for us.  They are put together now, I am jsut about 31 wks.  I was pushing DH to put them together b/c I am a “planner” and wanted to have it all set up just in case….

Crazy, that is our exact situation too (with the exception of the dates).  We don’t want to buy and assemble furniture LO will maybe use for a couple months and then have to move all that heavy stuff.  Plus, we want to keep our guest room as a guest room as long as we can.

DH and I purchased the crib and mattress at about 23 weeks because we got an awesome deal. We will be moving in two weeks so even though like you we plan on keeping the baby in our room for at least the first two months, we will be setting those up right away. We will likely wait to buy the other furniture (dresser and glider) until after our shower at which time I will be 30 weeks (unless we find another crazy deal beforehand)

@hoogirl05target actually 🙂 I signed up early online for the text/emails alerts for baby sales. They often have deals where if you buy a crib you get a free changing table or a mattress, etc.

I wouldn’t wait to buy furniture, gernally you don’t register for the big ticket items…you get those yourself or mom or grandma usually makes it known they want to buy it for you….and trust me they will. My mom already has dibs on the rocker and ottoman =) And I would want everything set up as much as possible before baby arrives, even if she is’t going to sleep in the crib it helps get you into the mommy mindset mode.
