Hi bee’s!!!!!!! I just found out yesterday I was selected to start my schools nursing program in the fall! I’ve been on the waitlist two years and expected to wait three so i’m super excited to be in early!
I have some questions about things they’ve told us we need and also am taking suggestions on things you think i’ll need to make the start of my schooling/career better.
First, we have to wear all white all leather shoes – absolutely no colors (they are very strict about our uniforms) They have to be whole shoes, no clogs, or straps for backs. Tennis shoes are okay as long as they are white and leather. Any suggestions on comfortable brands?
Second, I have to get a stethoscope. I had a cheap one a long time ago but would like to get a decent one for school. Nothing super expensive, but something that will last through school and into the very beginning of my career.
We also have a list of smaller things (penlight, pocket notebook, etc) but those i’m not worried about.
Any other suggestions or products you recommend let me know! THANKS!

I had a pair of nurse mates that I loved, otherwise I stick with New Balance shoes because I have really wide feet. Dansko’s are the popluar shoes right now, but I haven’t given because they are expensive and when I need new shoes I wear my old shoes for yard work shoes.
As far as stethoscopes go I have always stuck with Littman. They are the gold standard and come in a variety of prices. Good luck!

Danskos come in white. They are expensive but worth it- I’ve had my work pair for 2 years now.
As for stethoscopes, Litmann Classic 2 SE is the gold standard for cheaper stethoscopes. You can have your bell engraved… I highly recommend it. My stethoscope has been reunited with me so many times because my name is on it!

OK, so they’re not inexpensive by any means, but a Littmann‘s stethescope will last you FOREVER, and they’re the best ones in the business. You need a good stethescope to assess patients properly.
For shoes, if you have a Mark’s Work Wearhouse or similar in your area (the type of place that sells clothes for professions; i.e. they have coveralls, steel-toed boots, scrubs, nursing shoes, and business casual wear), they will have loads of brands to choose from for comfortable nursing shoes. : )
ETA: Apparently Littmann does have some cheaper stethescopes (under $100), so I would definitely reccomend them!

I wear easy spirit white shoes, extremely comfy and light 🙂

Though I’m not in nursing school, I second the Littmann and Daskos. I have the Cardiology III, and we were able to get it engraved with my name for free, something which has proven invaluable. As for the Danskos, they’re really comfortable after your feet form them, which is rather a painful process. I nearly cried everytime I put them on for the first six months I had mine, but now I’m so much less tired after wearing them as opposed to athletic shoes.

Another wide footed nurse, here and I only wear New Balance walkers. NurseMates were not comfortable for me. After 1 pr, I never bought another.
When I buy my New Balance, I get 2 pair, and alternate them. Thry need to dry out completely from sweaty feet. Makes them last much longer.
And, I also second the Littman stethoscope. Mine last for yrs.
The only thing I would caution is get a lightweight stethoscope (as a matter of fact, I have the Littman Lightweight). That thing hanging around your neck all day gets to be a pain (literally).
Congrats & good luck!

Wow! Thank you everyone! we’re headed to a nurse store this morning to check stuff out!!! I’m so excited! Thanks for all your help!

@kybride– my Littman lightweight ALWAYS slips off my neck… do you have this problem?

@bump: I bought a pair of easy spirit’s on clearance at macy’s yesterday! I wore them to work today and they’re too narrow, but i called the store and they come in a wide so i’m having them shipped home. I really like how light they are!

@mmr66: I have new balance tennis shoes and while they worked for a good 6 months, they didn’t work any longer than that and they KILL my feet. So, definitely don’t go that route. It may be the type of new balance I got but from what I hear its better to go with shoes from the nursing store.
I also suggest a littman stethoscope! That’s actually one of only 2 models my school lets you buy. The other is an MDF. I don’t have any experience with that brand, but the Littman is awesome!
Congrats on getting into nursing school!

Littman for a stethoscope all day. And I liked new balance when I was a staff/floor nurse. Make sure your school doesn’t require non permeable shoes because some shoes are permeable.

@paigers91: Thank You!
@mrs.folks: I asked, they have to be all leather and all white those are the only requirements!
I have decided on the Littman Lightweight Classic II S.E. stethoscope. I think my parents are going to purchase it for my birthday (june 23) if not i’ll buy it after then!
Thanks everyone for your suggestions! Keep ’em coming!
