I had the douche bag at the bank tell me that my copy wasn’t valid because it didn’t take up the whole page like normal copies. Sorry, we got married in a county that is made up of mostly agriculture. Apparently their copier isn’t high def. Now change my damn name!

I made an appointment.  Took time off work.  Went to my appointment.

ALL SYSTEMS WERE DOWN STATEWIDE.

Next appointment available was a few weeks later.

When I finally got my driver’s license, they managed to take the photo before I smiled and I’m stuck with a half smile/half stoner face

I had no problems at the Social Security office. In and out in 15 minutes. She was just caught off guard cause I have a Calfornia marriage certificate and not a Texas one(which is were we live).

Not to change my DL was a totally different story. I had to wait over 3 hours for me to talk to them. I even had to pay for a new card. And of course they questioned the marriage certificate.

My only take is that they are so used to seeing their own state marriage certificate that they cannot seem to accept other states as being different.

I hope the next time you go, you will be able to get your name changed.

I got my new license no problem, and while I was there I decided to update the registration on my car. So I PAID FOR THE NEW REGISTRATION to be updated with my new name, and she printed it out and gave it to me along with everything else. Not til I got to the car did I realize that she had just printed out an exact copy of the registration I already had, complete with my maiden name. It was only like $7 for the new copy but still — I PAID FOR YOU TO DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. I was quite annoyed, and just drove around with my maiden name on my registration for the next year despite having no ID to back it up whatsoever. Because eff the DMV.

@iarebridezilla:  They didn’t make you mail it in!? I’m pretty sure they told me that I had to mail that stupid thing in, in which case, I would have NO registration on hand! MEH

And yeah SS office was a cake walk. I even asked that stupid bank teller, why the hell changing my identity with the government was easier than changing my bank account lol

ETA: nevermind I just looked it up and you can walk in with your registration. Now I remember why I was annoyed. WTF wants to go to the DMV twice. Still haven’t changed it and just renewed my tabs.

I haven’t been able to change mine yet, because they want the official marriage certificate, not the keepsake one we get on the day and it takes 2.5 weeks to get the official one.

I am actually hoping that VicRoads (our version of the DMV) will go fairly smoothly. They let you change your name for free. Passport office? Same thing. My Working with Children check is going to cost me like $30 just to change my name! Literally everywhere else is doing it for free so I really don’t get it.

@viola47:  It’s an ID card you need to have in my state if your job or volunteer work has anything to do with kids – basically proof that you’ve been through police checks and you don’t have anything sus on your record that means you shouldn’t be working with children. I’m studying to be a primary teacher, so I need to carry mine with me on teaching placements and will need one to get registered as a teacher with the Victorian Institute of Teaching. Which is why that one’s kind of urgent, because I finish my course this semester and need to get my registration done soon, and I can’t do that if all my documents aren’t in the same name. :/
