I dye my hair red. Not a fire engine red, but a vibrant auburn color that, given my pale complexion, looks like it could be natural. It’s been this shade of red going on five years now. I don’t remember ever getting so many nosey comments or questions about it until recently.
Today I ran a bunch of errands and in every place I went to, at least two people stopped to ask me if it was my natural color or if it was dyed. Men are just as guilty of questioning it. Now, maybe I’m just extra grumpy today but it bugged the hell out of me. If you think it’s pretty, just compliment it. But I hate getting asked if it is real or “mine” <- this is in reference to the length. It’s long but healthy so people naturally assume it is fake. It gets my goat when people start to argue with me about it. I want to say “Shall I drop my pants right here so you believe it’s dyed? Or would you like to feel my hair up to see there are no extensions?” Ugh, people kill me!
There really is no purpose to this post. I’m just grumpy. I seriously don’t remember being questioned about it every time I left the house. I still live in the same area-a big, ethnically and racially diverse area. So it’s not like I’m living in an area where a pale red head stands out like a sore thumb. Sorry about the rant. My husbaget thinks the whole thing is profoundly entertaining.
for reference, my hair color. It’s about 6-8 inches longer now
Any other red heads, either natural or dyed, get the third degree from perfect strangers?

I think it’s very pretty and would never think to ask someone.
people are weird! I always get asked if my eyelashes are real since they are super long (they are real).

I dyed my hair an auburn red for eight years and the last year or so I had so many comments from people – some of them seemed weirdly bothered that I dyed it, though they were okay with it before I told them it wasn’t natural. Apparently being an unnatural redhead is just horrible?
And every time I went to have it touched up after my usual stylist quit, the salon workers would be like “Oh, of course red, everyone is doing red these days” and “oh, another redhead” and “yep, everyone’s buying into that trend right now” – uh yeah, me too, right now and for the last 8 years.
I recently went back to a blonde close to my natural darker blonde color just for something different, and now I’m getting comments about being a fake blonde. There’s no escaping it.

I have natural auburn hair and get asked quite often if it’s my real color. Sometimes people will just skip right past that question and start with, “What hair dye do you use?” I just take it as a compliment, but if it happened several times in one day, I think I’d be annoyed, too.

i’m a dyed redhead most of the time. it’s currently half my natural color (brown) and half sorta washed out reddish brown cause i got lazy and haven’t colored it in like, 8 months. i wish i could go light auburn, but i dye it myself at the moment and red is so hard to do at home. so i stick to medium auburn-ish colors. i have natural red tones in my hair, so everyone tells me i look best as a redhead.
i was the perfect “irish red”, like yours MrsPaulsBabyBallerina, one summer. it was amazing. someday, i’ll get to that color again. it’s a goal. cause i LOVED how it looked on me.

I dye my hair red and I get asked if it’s natural a lot too. It’s kind of a weird question to ask, but it doesn’t bother me too much. I’ve never had anyone argue with me though! That’s so odd, like why would you lie?

I’m a natural redhead, strawberry blonde, and I get asked “what’s your natural haircolor?” uhhh this? I usually get it highlighted, b/c I like it lighter. It’s already pretty light, but still very red, especially underneath and I haven’t had it done since like OCTOBER lol so whenever people ask me “what’s your natural haircolor?” I usually say this is it but I like it a little lighter and usually have it highlighted and they proceed to say “ohh but it’s so pretty you shouldn’t mess with it!” Didn’t you already think it was dyed 3 seconds ago when you asked me what my natural color was?

@MrsPaulsBabyBallerina: Every day. Literally, every day someone comments on my hair. Usually it’s just nice stuff, but probably two or three times a week it’s someone being nosy about whether it’s my natural hair color (sometimes people – cough SNOBBY COSMETOLOGY STUDENTS cough – absolutely insist it isn’t my natural color), who I got it from, my heritage, etc.
One really horrific thing to say to someone from a middle aged lady: “That hair color is really ….. interesting …. what’s the brand/number? What? That’s your NATURAL hair color? Wow. I’m sorry.” uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I get told I’m “pretty for a redhead” all the time. Probably once every few weeks. I’m always shocked and appalled when people say that … like how can you even think that’s a compliment?
Have you gotten “does the carpet match the drapes” yet?

I love your color! I would like to see a picture of it longer if you have one 🙂 I have blonde hair that I usually highlight and it’s curly and thick and generally very long and I’ve always gotten tons of comments/compliments/questions about it, but I can’t say I was ever particularly annoyed, just flattered. I think it’s just because you had a bad day!
@208bride: your hair color is gorgeous as well!
I’ve always wanted to try out red, but I’m too afraid to screw my hair up. From what I hear it’s hard to get back to blonde.

@208bride: your hair is stunning! And yeah, I’ve been asked if the carpet matches the drapes. WTF is wrong with people? In what world do you ask that type of question?
Glad to know I’m not the only one getting those questions. I was just a grump when I posted. Although, I am confused as to why only now am I getting the 3rd degree. Apparently redheads are like unicorns and rarely seen in nature.
@BlondeMissMolly: I don’t have any good pictures of it long on my iPad. I’ll see if I can find one when I get to my computer later.

I dye my hair a shocking red and I get people asking me if its real, its too funny because obviously this color does not exsist in nature LOL.

I used to dye my hair black (yes, I know, shut up!) and people would ask me if it was real quite frequently. Which was weird, because I have never, NEVER in my life seen a fair-skinned white person with light brown eyes and NATURALLY jet-black hair. So I always assumed people were just asking because they wanted to be jerks — they knew the answer was “no”. That’s like asking someone with blue hair if that’s their natural color. So stupid.

@MrsPaulsBabyBallerina: I love your color! As a natural redhead (identical to 208bride’s), yours looks completely real.
If my asking doesn’t piss you off- what brand and color do you use? I had a whole head of foils in light blonde, and I want to cover them up and get back to my natural looking red. Your color is one of the most natural dye jobs I’ve ever seen (I would have assumed natural if you hadn’t admitted to dying).
