I’m really looking to get off cheap this year as far christmas goes since we just got married and went on our Honeymoon so I’m trying to be as crafty as possible. Our niece will be around 5 months at Christmas so she doesn’t really need anything. We’ll still get her an outfit or two but I’d like to do something crafty as well. I already made her a name plaque for her room so that’s out. I found a DIY rockng horse that I love but she’s too little for something like that. Any ideas?

Bumpin’ this since I’m still drawing a blank.

Do you know how to knit/crochet or sew? I was thinking maybe a cute baby blanket or pillow with her name, etc?
Even those ones where you cut the fabric and tie the edges together are cute…

It sounds like the two outfits would be more than enough if you are trying to cut expenses, but how about a baby’s first Xmas ornament that you make. There are soooo many ways to make an ornament.

Our go to DIY present for First Christmas is a personalized clothing hook plaque for their bedroom. We buy a backer from Michaels (with 50% off coupon of course) and 2 hooks. Then we hand paint something on the plaque that matches their room theme. For my niece we did her name in themes of flowers. For nephew 1 we did a choo choo train with his name in it. Nephew 2 we did a road with cars with his name. His niece we did a ocean theme with octopus, seahorses, etc.
I might still have a pic of my nieces on photobucket, let me see….

How about a little rocking chair? or regular chair?

When I was still just a kid, I made a little stuffed pig for my baby godsister out of a bunch of old pink socks without their mates and some buttons. She latched onto that thing and played with it until it was completely beyond repair. Maybe you could make a slightly more advanced version. Something like this:

Thanks for the great ideas!!
So I’ve been thinking… I really want to make the rocking horse but I know she’s still too little to use it. She’ll obviously eventually grow into it but would it be a crappy xmas gift if it would just end up being displayed for however many months? We’ll still get her an outfit or two and probably a small toy or something but I love the rocking horse and I think that between Darling Husband and I, we could make it pretty kickass.
This is the horse I’m referring to but we would make it to match the name plaque that we made her when she was born…

I think its a great idea and its something she’ll grow into and have for her whole life. My kids have theirs (stored at my house) and I can’t wait for grandbabies to use them.
The rocking horse or a rocking chair or even a small set of table and chairs will get tons of use! Even a bookcase for her room is a good idea.
we did a simple one with a piece of wood and screw in legs, and just made easy stools. Painted and stencilled (several times) later and they used it for years.

@ItWasntMe: Oh, good! I was worried people would think it was stupid since it’s virtually useless to her for the next however many months.
That tutorial is cool. I’ll have to bookmark that for future reference.

The rocking horse is adorable! If you can crochet, I LOVE those little baby hats with the HUGE flowers on them. 🙂 You could probably even just sew one out of a cute fabric.

I would do the rocking horse! If you wait until next Christmas she will be 18 months sold and able to ride it for almost 6 months.

@UpstateCait: I love the rocking horse idea. Good luck! I wish I was as crafty as you!

@Nellular: Never crocheted in my life but it’s on my list of things to learn!
@julies1949: That’s what I’m thinking. I think we’re gonna do it.
@Rouquine: The craftiness is new so I’m still getting a hang of it.
