That's a really thoughtful idea... the only thing that comes to mind is Velveeta, but I'm not sure if that counts as real cheese?
A quick google search led me to Hickory Farms, which apparently has cheese that will keep unrefrigerated until opened. Maybe you could look into that? http://www.hickoryfarms.com/
Thanks jduck! Someone at work also mentioned Hickory Farms. She mentioned that they usually set up kiosks in the malls around the holidays, so hopefully I can get my hands on some.
Hey, they make cream cheese in the can, like cheese whiz style. What about that?! I don't kjnow about those laughing cows....i've always seen them in refrigerated cases =\
You could make puppy chow with the chex mix. Yum. And those powdered drink mixes (powerade makes some) are really popular, too.
Graham crackers taste nommy with cream cheese
Thanks for your input ejs! I will definitely have to look for the cream cheese that you talked about. I bet it would be great with graham crackers.
FI mentioned the powdered drink mixes too so I will pick up those this week.
We may try to make it to the Harry & David outlet and see what gift basket type stuff they have too.
I really appreciate the help :)
Hm. I would be worried about the cheese. You have no idea how long it will take to get to your loved ones. Not to mention the heat over in Iraq. I think it's a really sweet idea though!
I stand corrected!
Check this out.
So it seems vacuum sealing or wrapping in cheese cloth can help.
At our Trader Joe's, the Laughing Cow is kept on the (unrefrigerated) shelf with the crackers! :)
Cream cheese and graham crackers are delish! Also--canned frosting. Seriously. It was DH's "birthday cake" one year when they cut a bunch of mail funding overseas and you could only send non-perishables b/c items could sit in holding for a month! So chocolate canned frosting and grahams it was--he liked 'em, too!
Harry & David will also mail stuff to APO addresses. In fact, a LOT of companies do. And sometimes you get a discount if you call their customer service line and inquire about mailing to a dear loved one overseas.
Watch your chocolates--you have to be careful what you mail in what months over there. I've mailed chocolate (wrapped in a TON of plastic baggies) and figured if it melted, he could chill it down and break chunks off, lol. Just wrap it like an insane maniac.

FI and I are working on holiday packages to send to his friends who are in Iraq and Afghanistan. We want to include snacks and things that are reminders of the holidays. We're making Chex mix, snickerdoodle cookies, white chocolate cranberry popcorn (bought this), and other things.
I really want to include crackers with some sort of cheese. I have seen Laughing Cow cheese in gift baskets that aren't kept cold but am kind of nervous that it will go bad. Would it be considered perishable (you know how they ask you when you mail packages at the post office)?
Does anyone have any suggestions on a good product to use? Or should I nix the idea altogether. Thanks!
