Colored tights are definitely in this year. I'm sure you can pick up a couple cheaper pairs at target to try it out. I am pretty into fashion but I always emulate my very good friend who is a professional fashion buyer for Anthropologie. She always says that if you like it, where it! Fashion has no rules...
Love colored tights! Check out H&M for cheap ones. Just got purple tights there the other day!
I just picked up chocolate brown tights at target for this past weekend. They were inexpensive and comfortable.
Ha, that's what I'm trying to avoid is the 80's look. I just have a lot of neutral colors in my winter wear and would love to give them a bit more of a pop but without my legs shouting look at me and my crazy tights!
Thanks for the info on where to buy them!
I love wearing colored tights! Like others have said, check out Target and H&M... and also Old Navy and The Gap. They're so inexpensive, you can buy a bunch of different colors to try! :)
So what do you wear them with? Do you keep it to neutrals or try and have the tights match something in your top? And then the shoes matching, it seems complicated.
@Bvig: So far I usually wear them with sweater dresses/skirts and boots. Then it's not too much crazy color. But it would work with pumps too I think.
I was just looking at sweater dresses, I need to go winter shopping this weekend. Right now I have a couple white/beige sweaters so would try it out with a shorter skirt but I like the sweater dress idea better. Less things to match.
I don't have any crazy colors, but I do have a pair of deep purple & deep blue (sorta navy) and I wear them to work with dresses that have purple or blue in them. I actually got this idea from an Office Max ad that we have in the office and the women looked so nice & it was a great look for work.
Sock dreams actually has tons of great stuff that you might like. I prefer the EG. Smiths Leg therapy ones. They are cotton so they don't get runs!
I'm totally gonna rock them with my black dress for the rehearsal =)
I like the look of colored tights, but I have bigger legs so I stick to the darker colors - purple, navy, grey, brown... I get mine at Forever 21 - they're cheaper so if they get a run or a pull it's all good - they're like $3.
Like almost anything, done right it can be a great look. I prefer to pair mine with black as a way to give a pop of color. Deep red also looks nice with creams and browns. I get mine at Target and Forever 21.
Does anyone wear tights with open-toed shoes? In that picture, the model has on open-toed shoes...and it doesn't look that bad, but it's the first thing I noticed! I've always thought this was a no-no. What do you think?
The key to wearing colored tights is to not go overboard on the color elsewhere. Wear neutral colors in your attire, and make it pop with colored accessories. I wear colored tights with black dresses and skirts. And I second others - I buy mine at Target and H&M.
I wore them for our engagement shoot on Sunday, actually! Sadly, the only picture I have from Sunday (so far) is a poopy one I took on my blackberry. Can't wait to see how it looks in photos.

The actual breakdown of the outfit can be found heeeeere: http://iloveyoumuch.com/wordpress/?p=557
It ended up looking super mod and fun, methinks.
Thanks fifty. I saw your your blog yesterday with the outfit shown in each piece and it started getting me thinking about how much I like it and maybe I can try to pull this off
I love colored tights and think they look really cute. Because they're trendy, I stick to buying them at cheaper places like Target or H&M.
Sweet. :) You're welcome. I think the best thing to do is just go for it. My next "scared to wear it" conquering will be tights + shorts. We'll see how that turns out. :p
@fifty: The Hue tights are long enough for you? Do you get tall sizes?
I only ask because I have a 34" inseam and anything but H&M (size L) are too short! And even those are a stretch ;o)
Hue tights end up being more hip-huggers on me. I buy them in the non-control top version (which I couldn't find a link to anywhere online... lol) and in a size 3 (up to 6' and 165-200lbs) and just jerk the heck out of them up. I have super long (37) legs, but they are a little on the chicken side I guess, so it usually evens out. They aren't quite as opaque on me as they are for most people, and towards the top you can start to see through them a little, but I think I'm the only one that notices. Sometimes I'll double-wear them so that they'll go more opaque. But the lack of control top plus a higher quality tight that stretches better/is softer will allow me to wear them. (I also have no butt, so I'm not sure if that plays a part in all of this).
I also have a few pairs of gap and oldnavy tights that I have yet to try on. We'll see how those guys work.
@missomally, again I think it depends on how you do it. The example picture isn't too great of a contrast, the colors are complementary, plus the shoes have a pretty small peep toe.
Something like this is more distracting to me:

but that even still works to a point.
i love colored tights, (and tights for winter in general). I usually pair them with nuetral skirts and dresses and try to avoid the matchy matchy look of having over accesories in that color.
Also I think it's ok to wear opaque tights with open toe shoes as long as the shoes are appropriate. I would wear with peep toe but not with a strapy sandals for example.
Hey, Scissors--thanks for the tip on the Hue tights. I bought some recently and they're awesome!
I love colored tights - they are quirky and sooooo fun to wear! I'm especially loving the graphic ones available...
It'd be great to wear these from Etsy shop Post - http://www.etsy.com/shop/post

Or these ones from Les Queues de Sardines... http://www.les-queues-de-sardines.com/collections.html

I keep seeing colored tights around. Maybe I'm behind the times but I've decided I really like them and want to try it out this fall and winter. Only problem is I have little fashion sense.
So how do you pull off colored tights?
Are there any guidelines to follow or inspiration pictures to help out?
And where can you buy good tights not for a crazy price?
