I listen to show tunes. My hubby doesn't. He does listen to some of my stuff though, mostly the shows that are songs from bands (Mamma Mia and Jersey Boys).
Teddy likes everything but country and pop...he prefers to listen to bands under the radar...I actually hid my love for pop music for over a year in our relationship...i was slightly ashamed for my love of lady gaga...backstreet boys and justin timberlake along with many more...then one day i just said screw it...and I downloaded a whole bunch of pop songs...and now he is OK with listening to pop because he thinks its funny when I sing and dance along..lol
We both listen to classic rock, oldies, Mexican music (him more than me), pop (me more than him), 80's & lots of punk rock. FI loves the big hair bands from the 80's & I hate it! I like to listen to what I call "spa music" & FI hates it!
@CaraMia10: Your FI has great taste in music if he loves those 80's hair bands like me, lol!!!!!
We have VERY similar taste in music... except for one thing... He LOVES Elvis, and is trying to teach me about his appreciation of him :) hahaha! I have to say I can understand it a little better now, he sings "wise men say" and "love me tender" to me to show me how beautiful the songs are. He makes me melt every time. I even request them now, but I actually prefer him to the King singing them any day, he has an amazing voice (yes... shamelessly bragging!)
We have completly different tastes. I'm a country girl through and through and his preference is rap and hip hop. So much so that he requested we play that Eminem/Rhianna song at the wedding. That was a big fat VETO!
It has been fun, though, to learn about other types of music that I wouldn't normally listen to. Some of it isn't half bad. And I've got him appreciating the heck out of country music. Woo hoo!
@Texacali: He wanted to play "Love the Way You Lie"? At the wedding? I am speechless. Did he think about the implications of that at all? Lol...
We've got about a 50% overlap of music we like. I can't stand any of the emo he used to listen to in college (and still loves), and he thinks that most of the slow- to mid-tempo indie I listen to is dullsville. But there are plenty of artists that we both like.
For the most part, our tastes are polar opposites. He likes showtunes, motown and 80s punk which I don't like but don't make him change, while I mainly listen to country (which makes him cringe) and rock. Kings of Leon and Frank Sinatra are pretty much the only ones we both like.
My FI loves D&B, progressive house, (not techno which is different apparently) and alternative. I love country music - my favourite genre and he HATES it, while I'll listen to anything, except not a big fan of hard rock.

Although my guy thinks he's pretty well-rounded when it comes to music (he admits to liking some country), his preference is R&B and hip-hop. Gangsta rap crap, too. I agree with some of his old-school picks (Boys 2 Men, Bell Biv Devoe, New Edition), but I find a lot of today's rap too disgusting. (I'm an Eminem fan though!)
I'm such an 80's girl, and my favorite type of music comes from the Glam-Rock bands like Poison, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Guns N Roses, Def Leppard, etc. As I grew older I gravitated toward Grunge/Alternative bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains. I have become my father meaning I wondered why he always listens to his 60's music, his Golden Oldies.....now I realize I do the same with my "classic" rock. Oh God, I feel so old, but this crap on the radio now just isn't the same. *sigh*
So what kind of music do you guys like? And is it different from what your SO likes?
