I like celebrating fall. Halloween was exciting as a child, but now that I'm 23, I haven't celebrated it in forever. I know a ton of people who always do so they can dress up sexy and drink all night. Not my thing. Anyways, I do plan to take my childen out trick-or-treating once they come around. I have noticed though - at least in my areas - that not many children go out anymore. If that's the case, I will create fun activities for my children to do on Halloween night and have them invite friends over.
We LOVE halloween. We try to go all out every year and attend/host halloween parties! Love it!
We celebrate it...just so happens to fall around my brother in law's bday so we always celebrate his bday with a Halloween themed dress up party...I now celebrate Halloween more as an adult then I did as a kid and I LOVE IT!
@VickyAurea: we certainly celebrate here, partially because we have a child and that would be cruel not to ;) but mostly because it is just fun. I love fall, it is my favorite, and I am a fatty I love halloween candy :)
I live "somewhere else" (Canada, lol) and I like to give out candy to the kids and decorate the house a little even though we don't have kids yet. I'd just feel bad turning out the lights and pretending we're not home!
Oh, and then there's the adult Hallowe'en parties....haha, those are fun, too.
My parents weren't fans of it, we went to "fall parties" instead, that was essentially halloween but without the label haha. now that I'm grown, I don't think much of it. I think adult halloween parties could be fun, but I've never been to one. It can be a taboo subject among Christians, which most of my friends are. Especially when a couple has kids - haha it's quite interesting! And unnecessarily dramatic, "that family is a pagan, they trick-or-treat!" lol
Who knows what I'll do when I have kids... I'll cross that bridge when I get there, but as of now, I just don't see the big deal. I like Thanksgiving! That's my favorite.
I always go to a Halloween party but I am not a huge fan of dressing up. I have a couple times when the people throwing the party wouldn't let it go but for the most part I will go to the party and drink but I won't dress up.
Oh, also, Hallowe'en here is not about dressing up sexy. You dress up scary. (think of Mean Girls)
I've always enjoyed getting dressed up. Halloween is just another reason to do so :) And I can't wait til I have kids that I can dress up too!
I don't really do Halloween at the moment, but they do a big parade for Samhuinn in Edinburgh (the original Halloween before Christians and then commercialism highjacked it). Lots of nudity, dancing and general misbhaviour.
I love Halloween but I have found lately it sneaks up on me and I don't have the time to embrace or enjoy it. This year I haven't decorated yet and probably won't dress up...oh well, next year.
When I was living in Scotland I was amazed at the overall difference in feeling and fall related activites versus the US. It was very clear that Halloween in the UK was more of a child/prankster celebrated activity and adults really didn't bother. It was a major bummer for me being used to something different. :)
I love halloween, I don't dress up every year, but when we do we go all out. And scary costumes only, none of this bumblebee, nurse, princess whatever crap lol.
I'm a Halloween FREAK! It's my favourite holiday over all others! There hasn't been a year that's gone by since I was a toddler that I haven't dressed up or celebrated in one way or another.
My FI thinks it's adorable how excited I get and now we've built our own Halloween traditions - we have a horror movie marathon the Saturday before Halloween (or on the day, if it actually falls on a Sat) and we eat those fun-sized candies/chocolates and I make a Halloween inspired meal (ok, so sometimes this just consists of calling things halloween-y names, lol) and usually decorate as well.
This year will be the first year that we've celebrated together and owned our own home so I'm looking forward to decorating the front of the house and giving out candies to the kiddies on Halloween (I will be in costume - OF COURSE!) One day, I plan on our house being THE house that kids want to go to because of the yard being completely done up but finances won't allow it right away.
We have picked our wedding date as October 28, 2012 and I will be wearing zombie high heels under my dress - I LOVE Halloween! : )
I have never been very into Halloween. When i was a kid I loved getting candy. In college I loved going out. That is the end of it. I guess I do not really get it. However, I do love fall and would love to celebrate it. Maybe when I have kids I will feel differently, but for now, I am not that into it. I also am not into anything "scary."
If I didn't have nieces and nephews I probably would pay little to no attention to Halloween, it's kinda fun I guess but not exactly my favorite holiday.
We love Halloween , we are from Canada .. but I decorate our house and give out full chocolate bars ! This will be our second year owning a home so it is still very exciting and new to decorate , ask me in 5 years I will probably be watching TV with the lights off and rig my door bell to electrocute people.
Lots of people have mentioned "celebrating fall" and "fall parties". Definitely nothing like that goes on here in the UK.
When I was living in the UK I was in a university town, so Hallowe'en was celebrated because it was just one more excuse to get dressed up and have a party, lol.
Here in Vancouver, there's tons of stuff to do around Hallowe'en whether you're an adult or a kid, so we celebrate it for pretty much the entire last half of October because that's the only way you get to see and do all the fun things available!
On the schedule for DH and I this year:
Fright Nights at our local amusement park - haunted houses galore, ride the wooden roller coaster and other thrill rides in the dark, costumed performers walking around everywhere
A murder mystery party
Parade of Lost Souls - a large gathering of people in costume plus hired actors/dancers/circus performers for a walk around the city
And we're also driving down to Seattle for a day to catch a performance of Evil Dead: The Musical.
Trick-or-treating is still reasonably big here, but definitely more concentrated in certain neighborhoods. I hate living in an apartment building because we don't get any kids coming to our door, and I love seeing the kiddos running around in costume! I hope by the time DH and I have kids that trick-or-treating still exists. Hallowe'en was my favorite night of the year as a kid.
@linguo42: make sure you sit in the first 6 rows so you get splattered with blood!
I would LOVE to celebrate it {Aussie, right here} but it's just not as big a deal here as it is elsewhere. When we have kids, we might do a fun dress up at home/family party thing, but going out trick or treating just isn't something that's done here. :(
I didn't celebrate as a child - I wasn't allowed to go trick or treating.
FI and I get candy to give out to any trick or treaters that come to our house, but last year we got none and the year before that only 2. It's not really celebrated that much here in NZ.
There are other things organised by community groups such as saints and angel parties for the kids. October is late spring in NZ so not the right season at all!
I loved Halloween as a kid, I liked dressing up and getting candy. It doesn't hurt that I won a really nice trip to Disney when I was 4 through our local radio station that does a special Halloween giveaway program (they start at 5pm, the main point is to keep young kids from being out at night- one of the most disgusting murders locally happened about 40 years ago on Halloween. stupid creepers taking advantage of the holiday).
Anyway, I'm not really into partying so I don't really do anything for it now... I love candy corn though, so I'm all over that tradition, haha. I'm sure I'll get into it again when I have kids.
I LOVE halloween! Have been known to go overboard in the past! We always go to parties friends and family host. Miss my university Halloween parties, they were epic!
It is a bit controversial for me since converting to Catholicism, but there's plenty of thinking these days that Halloween doesn't have to be wrong to partake in.
Halloween used to be my crazy party night. Now I've replaced that with Trick or Treating with my daughter. One of these days I'd love to take the family to Salem for the festivities, I live pretty close.
@Mollytov: We were in the second row :) Didn't get splattered much, though. The Seattle one was a lot tamer blood-wise than when it was playing in Vancouver, and only the people sitting front row stage left really got soaked. I take it you saw it when it was here?
@FutureMrsMaher: I was raised Catholic, my mother teaches at a Catholic school, I went to Catholic school for many many years and we always celebrated Halloween? Wan't aware of any rules against it?
We pretty much live for Halloween in our house... it's the only holiday I like besides Thanksgiving =D
I have a huge birthday Halloween party then I fill the rest of the week with parties and bar crawls so I can get a bunch of different costumes in. We always watch scary movies and do the usual pumpkin patch visit along with the corn maze! We watch a lot of scary movies and usually try and find a zombie walk. We carve our pumpkins, make pumpkin rolls, decorate... it's just the best time of year for us. =D
My FSIL and FBIL have to live in one of the most active suburbs for trick or treating. The last two years, my FI and I have had a blast, handing out candy at their house while they take their kids out trick or treating, door to door. I love the way this neighborhood does it. Everyone, for several blocks, sets up out in their driveway with chairs, usually a firepit to stay warm or an outdoor space heater. The kids, hundreds of them, just come up to you in the driveway and get their candy. The first time we did this, and my FSIL was putting together these HUGE bowls of candy beforehand I thought she was crazy. No way could they go through all of it. I was wrong. We emptied out every last piece of candy, which was probably about 40 bags of the funsize candy bars. It really was like a constant parade of kids with parents, not to mention pets, dressed up in costumes too. It has a great block party atmosphere and the best time. I can't wait to do it again this year!
@KatyElle: Agreed. I went to Catholic school from Pre-K to 8th grades. Everyone celebrated it in my school. My grandmother who is very religious allowed it in her house - just as long no "evil" (IE: Oujia board) was involved. It's mostly about getting candy and dressing up as a child. What other people do in their own time is on them.
I love Halloween mostly for the classic scary movies. Oh, and I used to have a tradition where I'd watch The Rocky Horror Picture Show every Halloween night growing up.
I put yes! (from the UK) - but it hasn't always been that way. I have never been trick or treating as a child, but I go to lots of adult halloween themed parties now I don't live with my parents (they didn't like halloween at all, they said it was such an American thing!)
So yes, I am going to putting on my scary outfit (normal clothes, hehe) this weekend! Spooky!!!
Hallowe'en party tonight for me! And probably for loads of you, too, since it's a Saturday night. Happy Hallowe'en, bees! :D
I was thrilled to see how many girls were dressed up 'scary' instead of the handful who chose 'sexy' this weekend in Belfast!
Happy Hallowe'en! :)
FI and I are going to have one pumpkin and one turnip carved every year to show our blend of culture!
@hana.schmitt: Perfect. I love carved turnips. They feel so much more homely to me. I actually saw some really good carved turnip lanterns the other day and thought it'd make a lovely autumn wedding theme - so now I need a friend to get married in October one year so I can be in charge of vegetable-related decor.

It's obviously big over in America but here un the UK most people dismiss Hallowe'en as a thing for little kids and as an American thing (not realising it actually originated as a pagan tradition over here, with carved turnips and the like.... it's just pumpkins that are American).
Anyway, that being said (the US bees have got me saying that phrase!), who will be celebrating Hallowe'en this year? Responses welcome from bees across the world, but in particular I want to know about the UK bees and if Hallowe'en means anything to them or not.
I do feel like we miss out on a lot of the festive "fall" vibe that the US bees goes on about, with their pumpkin pie, pumpkin ale, pumpkin latte, pumpkin everything, there could be pumpkin eyeshadow for all I know! And with Hallowe'en not being a big deal to most people here, and Thanksgiving not existing, well...... I'm just frankly quite jealous, bees!
