NWR: Does "getting in trouble" stress you out?

I have never liked getting in trouble. I usually just did what I needed to at home or in school because I didn’t see the point in wasting more time fighting things. Also, I’m a big geek and liked school and really tried, so I only once got in trouble at school (I was 5 and flipped a classmate off having no idea what it meant). Now, getting in “trouble” would really stress me out. I’m a teacher so I’m really conscious of how I act and what I say at work because I want to  maintain a solid boundary between me and my students (I’m a decade older than the Freshman I teach which is nice).

It doesn’t bother me if someone has a different opinion than I do. If I really screwed up at work and was disciplined for it, of course I would be upset.

If a family member expressed disappointment- too bad for them. I make the best decisions I can for myself and have to live  my own life.

If that professor said anying to me about using my phone ten minutes before class, I would  say “I’m sorry that my using my phone outside of class hours is so upsetting for you. I will go outside the classroom when I need to make calls before class in the future.”

Yup, or if I think someone is upset with me. Makes my heart race and I get really anxious

@howsweetitis:  Yep and mostly for work….I get stressed out with things that don’t really get me in trouble but hurt my ‘personal brand’ at work, like spacing out and forgetting about meetings, not meeting my personal productional goals.

One time I DID mess up at work and completely downloaded a file on my work computer that wasn’t supposed to be there.  I got a call from HR, they set up a ‘confidential’ meeting the next day…I was a nervous WRECK!  It wasn’t a huge deal but I’m usually very well behaved and don’t make many mistakes…so when I do I always stress about the ramifications!!

@howsweetitis:  I know! It can be difficult when this person is in a position of power over you. That’s why I try to find a way to respond that shows this is  a non- issue (outside of class hours) but lets them feel like they won.

It depends.

My online class instructor who clearly doesn’t know what she’s doing? I am not bothered in the slightest that she sounds obviously annoyed in her emails to me. I don’t respect her position as an instructor because she’s lousy at it.

The two mentor teachers I work with? I would probably burst into tears if they were upset with me. I respect them immensely, and I work hard at what I do. Their approval means a lot to me, so yes, I would be upset if they had an issue with me or my work.

So I guess it’s mostly dependent on whether or not I seek someone’s approval, and that is largely related to how much I respect them.

I have NEVER been able to handle criticism. EVER!
