Long Island is a very expensive place to live regardless of where you are looking. I would look in Garden City, Garden City Park, parts of Westbury, Bethpage, Levittown, Hicksville, Carle Place, Wantagh, Seaford, Massapequa, Bellmore. There are not very many apartments, but there may be houses available for rent. The area right around Hofstra is not great (Hempstead; Uniondale). Will you be working? If you are working in the city, take into account local train stations.
@speechie: Ditto this question about where will you be working? Syosset and Great Neck also have a decent amount of apartments and a great commute but they are super expensive areas. Try looking in Huntington.
Fi will not be working while in law school and I will work somewhere full time (hopefully) near where I live and going to school part time. A lot of what I have seen has been small houses for rent which would be fine. I did find some decent places in Garden City, but I will check out the rest of the places. Thanks for the help ladies!
I used to live in Long Beach. There are SO many apartments there, not a bad ride to Hofstra and the beach is great!
Try Rockville Centre, Garden City, Mineola (only certain parts), Manhasset, Great Neck, Old Westbury, Avalon Apartments are nice too (in a few different towns on LI)
Check MLSLI.com, they have a rental search, Really I'd try to stay in Nassau because of the rush hour commutes. In addition to some of the other girls wonderful ideas, try Lynbrook, Malverne, Westbury, New Hyde Park, Franklin Square, East Meadow.
Good Luck!

My FH and I will be relocating to Long Island shortly after the wedding from Cincinnati so he can go to Law School at Hofstra in hempstead. What's a good neighborhood near there for some broke grad students to rent an apartment?
