I'd go to see a hair dresser and have some layers put in. I have similar textured hair to you and my stylist did a great job. It tapers off my face (about chin length) to just below my shoulders then it tapers every so slightly (and not noticeably) shorter befor getting longer at the back (around there the collar bone is). When it's not down I've started wearing mine up on the side, modern/fashionable without being try hard.

I've been married about six months and my DH and I just moved across the country together. We moved from the midwest to NY so I feel like its time to update my look a little. Plus my hair is way too long and just feels heavy. All I do is put it in a ponytail and i'm getting tired of looking at it this way. I'm just having trouble finding a picture of what I want. Here's how my hair is now... Sorry terrible picture (I'm wearing a shirt i swear lol.) You get the idea of how long it is anyways.
The other one is an earlier picture that shows my natural hair texture pretty well. Its quite a bit shorter in this picture than it is now. 
So I'm thinking maybe going about collar bone length and I want some kind of side swept bang too. I rarely wear my hair straight and like low maintenance better. Anyone have any ideas of what I could do? I want to look modern, but not like I try too hard. Does that even make sense?
