I decided that for DH’s 35th birthday I’m throwing him a surprise birthday party. And not just any surprise party…an 80’s party (he’s huge into the 80’s)! I cannot tell you guys how excited I am for this. He’s never had a party party and I know he will just love it. I want to do it big and right, but I have no idea where to even start. I don’t want to go all cheesy and just buy whatever decorations they have at Party City. So help me out here. What are your big ideas for an 80’s theme?

Love theme parties! In Nov we just had a toga party for my 27th! Fun!
So for decor, think “The Max” on Saved by the Bell haha! I would get giant peices of bright colored posterboard, and cut out giant and random shapes and hang them on the walls or from the ceilings.
Bright colored table clothes, neon colored baloons, and you can get a bunch of those metallic 80s sunglasses from the dollar store and give them for everyone to wear!
Also, in college, whenever frat parties had themed parties, they would create a giant background/ painting on a sheet and everyone would take pics in front of it, so you could do the same and have a home made photobooth!

You’ve given me some great starting tips! I’m thinking of copying a bunch of pics of when DH was young (in the 80’s) and somehow making those into centerpieces.
I LOVE your idea of the photobooth! I’m thinking of hiring the photographer who shot our wedding to take pics of DH’s party too.
His birthday for another year but I definitely want a headstart because I want it done right.

I would try to see if I could find old cardboard cutouts (or have pictures turned into cardboard cutouts at like kinkos or something) of people whose looks were really famous in the 80’s and have them attend the party. Like Madonna and Michael Jackson.
I saw one where a girl had a pac-man themed cake. Maybe hire an 80’s cover band.

I’m a geek but I say, ask everyone to dress up like a character from an 80’s movie like Dirty Dancing???

Check out the Hostess with the Mostess blog. Such amazing ideas! Not sure if they’ve featured an 80’s themed party or not, but I’m sure you’ll find amazing ideas on their blog.

It would be so cool if you could rent old school video games (like pac man, donkey kong, etc) – assuming hubby was into that as a kid!
Are you going to have people come dressed up as 80’s?
I don’t think you need to go crazy on the decor – as much as you do on making sure people dress the part. Think – leg warmers, op shorts, tank tops, etc.
Is hubby into anything in particular? It would probably be pretty cheap to find posters of he favorite things from that time period – ie: sports, movies, music – that could tie in really well with the theme and then you could just put up basic balloons, etc.
Plus – it might be fun to put up pictures of him in the 80’s … or have people send you pictures of themselves from the 80’s and have them up for display – that would be hilarious to see!

@oracle: I’m going to have to dig a little and see what kinds of things he was into. I love your idea of having people give me pics of themselves in the 80’s. I bet I could make some kind of game out of it. I was also thinking of maybe playing a Brat Pack movie; not to watch, but just in the background to get that vibe.
@mwitter80: You reminded me of The Wedding Singer. But that would be a WAY cool idea…I’ll have to look into that!
@ItalianLady: I definitely want people dressing up, so I hope we won’t have any Debbie Downers. This could be so much fun for everyone involved.
@texasmeredith: I will check out the blog for sure. Thanks so much!
I am even more excited now. I know he’ll love it!
