A friend of a friend offered to pay me to do a project for her – enter all of her contacts (over 1000) into an excel spreadsheet. She said she’d pay me by the hour. But I’ve never done a side project like this and I have no idea what to charge her. I would rather under-charge than over-charge since she’s my friend, but I also don’t want to bust my ass for hours & only end up making $50. Does anyone have a clue what a normal per hour rate is for something like this? I’m thinking about $10/hour but I want to get some opinions. (Also keep in mind I live in NY – I think we tend to pay more here than down south or the mid-west.) Thanks in advance 🙂

I think $10/hour sounds reasonable.

Hmm.. I would say $10 would be a fair price here in the midwest! So, knowing nothing about NY other than that it is definitely more expensive than where I’m from, I’d say you’re entitled to more than that. It’s a tedious job that she obviously doesn’t want to do herself!
ETA: Do you know, roughly, how long it would take you? Maybe you could figure out how much you’d like to make from it and divide by how long it would take you to find a reasonable price?

@stargazer102706: I think $10 is more than fair:))) I was think more like $15 but I’m from Australia so money could be different!!!

I’m thinking I’d be expecting about $12.00/hour if I took a real job as a data entry clerk privately (I had this job right out of university but for gov’t/union so it was about $20/hr).
I think $10 sounds fair to a friend.

$10/hour sounds VERY generous. I know she’s a friend, but what if this takes you absolute aaaages?
I did freelance web design a few years back for a friend and I charged about $20/hour. Any less and it just wasn’t worth it to me.

Secretarial / Admin Entry Jobs in big city centres are paying in the $ 15 to $ 20 Range.
For a friend, I agree charging less seems fair… I say $ 10 at the low end… $ 12 to $ 15 at the high.

Thanks guys. I just don’t want to charge a lot of money for simply typing things up into an excel spreadsheet. If it was something difficult, something that actually required me to think, I’d probably charge closer to $15-20/hr. Plus I already spend most of my weeknights sitting on the couch, messing around on my laptop. So it’s not like entering names & numbers into excel will be a hardship or inconvenience for me. I think I’m going to go with $11/hr. Thanks to everyone who gave their input 🙂
