Funny you should post this. I was talking with J the other night on how I would love to buy a Kindle. He told me I should just invest into an iPad then. I'm not sure if I could afford it though, plus I already have a MacBook and an iPhone. So, I'd love to hear some opinions as well.
@DesireeAnne: The kindle commercials really have me scared about the glare factor! Plus the iPad looks huge to use as a reader.
@daydreamwanderer: Yeah, I think that if I bought the iPad, then I should just sell back my MacBook and be done with it. There'd be no use in my opinion. So, I think I may go for the Kindle - but then again, I feel guilty for spending money! Hah.
I have a Kindle and I love it. I read so much more now than I used to! And it is quite handy.
My advice is that if you already have a device (iPhone, Blackberry, Android, etc.) that handles your email and mobile web access, go for the Kindle or other eReader (I have been checking out the color screens for a potential upgrade eventually). If you get the iPad and you already have a smartphone, it's kind of redundant, unless you have an especially big need - using it to take notes in class, for example.
Good luck making up your mind - I know it's so hard with so many cool choices!
@southerntransplant: I've thought about downloading Kindle app on my iPhone which would be handy for now, but my iPhone is only an 8GB. I would read so much more too if I had something handy like that. All of this reading talk is making me want to buy it now or indulge in a book. Unfortunately, I'm dry on money until Thursday.
I have a Kindle and i LOVE it. It is a lot smaller than the ipad, which is nice when you just want to carry around a book rather than something larger. I say if you just want something to read on go with an ereader. its light, easy to read and there are a ton of books available. ereaders are also considerably cheaper than an ipad. good luck!
I have a Kindle and I LOVE it. Not sure what glare you are talking about though...mine has none.
I voted other - I have a kindle (DH's wedding/birthday present to me!) and absolutely love it. I have no desire for an ipad though. It just isn't a technology that speaks to me at all. I love the kindle though. I commute on the bus to work, and I love having access to so many books, with a gadget that weighs next to nothing.
I voted other...I have a Kindle, an iPhone, and a MacBook Air, procured in that order over the past year.
I LOVE my Kindle! It inspires me to read more and I like having a device that functions as a mobile library. I love that it has a free connection to the Amazon bookstore and sends books over the AT&T network for free (if you are in a service area). I also love that you can try samples of a book for free before you buy.
I agree with @southerntransplant, the Kindle's screen makes it easy to read even outside in full sun.
I have the Kindle app on my iPhone, but only use it once in a while. And I chose the laptop over an iPad because I like a real keyboard.
Good luck and congrats on the new job :)
I absolutely love using the Kindle app on my iPad. I had to vote other because I have an iPad so I wouldn't buy a Kindle, and I have no desire to upgrade my device even though the new ones are out.
@missyjane77: glare on the iPad! :) The kindle being glare free is a HUGE selling point for me.
@pink.sequins: thanks for the congrats :)
@lox: does the glare bother you at all, reading on it?
ps - I do have an android phone, on which I use the kindle app. That's what got me started thinking that I'd love an ereader ... I didn't think I would use it, but I totally read on my phone every night before bed now! I love how many classics they have for free too :)
I want an iPad just because I'm a mac junkie, hahahaha...I only use my macbook recreationally, so I don't really NEED an iPad for anything. :/ Although, if we traveled as much as we wish we could, I think it would be a lot easier to tote around then my laptop. I hate the limited nature of email and facebook (and not having access to WB) on my phone. I mean, I love having some access, but it's just ... not the same.
This is going to sound like a dumb question (and it probably is), but you can't use an ereader for anything besides reading, right? Books, magazines, newspapers. You can't, like, surf the web or read plain text email on it?
We have a BIG 3gKindle and I love it.
I don't think I would ever buy an ipad, i just don't see the point. I have a [media heavy]laptop, my partner has a notebook, we share a kickass kindle and we both have smart phones.
I think I would probably buy something else, though I don't know what.
maybe upgrade my ipod to a larger[gb] version. maybe.
@daydreamwanderer: gotcha! I was wondering! lol
i think an ereader is limited to sites without flash or [heavy]java.
we've used it to check our stocks, read [full] rss feeds for blogs --email is tricky, but we use our smart phones for that.
however, we have a 3G network kindle, rather than one without or with a bluetooth/wifi card, so i think that makes a difference too?
I have the Nook Color and it has a full web browser. I can check facebook - post on facebook, check my email. It also has a Pandora app and games (Soduku, Crosswords, Chess).
I love my Nook Color!
I have a Kindle (just got it a couple weeks ago) and I absolutely love it!!!!!!! I've already finished a couple books on it, it's so lightweight and clear, and there's no glare from the sunlight on the screen either. I have a blackberry also, so I didn't need my ereader to have an internet browser.
@Tedmo: I heard that the Nook can only download books in the US; is that true? We travel/will be living abroad, so functionality everywhere is really important to us!
@missmouse29: thanks for the info!
I guess I should use my android more ...... the screen is just so tiny! 3 inches?! I feel like my 13 inch laptop screen is too small half the time, hahaha.
I currenly have a Nook (the original one) so unfortunately all I can do is basic browsing on the B&N site and reading in b&w. But thats all I wanted a ereader for so it's completely cool! It was a Christmas present two years ago.
My husband just mentioned last night that he would like to get a iPad. "We" currently have a Macbook Pro but I guess technically it is mine because it was my Christmas present. I get what he means. He wants an iPad so it's "his" and he can play on it and browse when I'm on the laptop. The nice thing about it too is like you mention when we travel we can just bring the iPad in lieu of the laptop. Much lighter to travel with.
Per B&N Support you can not purchase books while overseas. But if it is in your online digital library you can DL it via Wifi. So when you're overseas you can purchase books online on your laptop and DL via WIFI to the Nook.
If it were just me since I have a laptop already I see no need for a full functioning tech toy like the iPad if my main goal was to read. I would just go for the ereader. However, if you see yourself consolidating tech toys when you travel abraod the iPad might be a nice convenience factor. Having a powerful laptop like tool AND a eReader.
A partner at my firm basically uses her iPad like a laptop. She even bought a super cool tiny white Mac keyboard for it. It's sooo cool!
I have a Kindle and I love it! The iPad is some really amazing technology, but if I were going to buy one, it would be just for fun, not functionality. I use my laptop constantly and don't think that the iPad could replace it. The Kindle is definitely just for reading books. It has a web browser but it is pretty much useless. I chose the Kindle over the Nook simply because I would rather support Amazon than B&N (no real reason for that other than I think B&N is overpriced and I am a huge Amazon fan). If you want to do more than just read, go with the iPad and find a way around the glare. I would guess that the iPad's screen would strain your eyes after a while, though. I read for hours on the Kindle with no problems. Good luck in your search!
I have a kindle (well, technically it's my dad's but he's been letting me borrow it). I like it for what it is, but honestly if I had the money I'd probably get an ipad at this point. My dad has an ipad and because he has it is the reason I get to use the kindle. He LOVES the kindle app on the ipad, plus all of the other features of the ipad so he's a huge proponent of that now. If I ever have the money I want to get an ipad for myself, but there are a lot of other things that we need to save for right now, so that's going on my Christmas list!
@Gerbera: Yeah, Nook would be out for me then. When we go overseas, it's for like 11 months at a time - half the point of getting an ereader is so that I would still have access to a library of books (which, you know, don't exactly fit in a 50pound suitcase). Having to buy everything ahead of time makes it really hard to know what I will want over the course of that year!
I'm leaning more and more towards getting a kindle.
Thanks for all of your input! I appreciate hearing your experiences. :)
depends what you wanna do if you wanna read on it get a kindle, if you want to play flash games, don't get either, if you want a mini computer get ipad.
Kindle is way cheaper than an ipad. You won't want to read on an ipad becasue of the glare.
I don't see why you couldn't have the nook overseas, you need to download books via your computer anyway no? It's nice that you can get free books from a library which you can't do on the kindle, for that reason I'd boycott the kindle.
Oh yes! I totally forgot about the borrowing of the library books. Doh!
Yes, I absolutely love that feature. I'm such a cheap a$$ I hardly ever purchase books. I have an account with my local library and the NYC Public Library.
And FYI B&N books are not that much more expensive than Amazons. And the nice thing about B&N is I can get coupons and rebates via Ebates on all my purchases. :D
With the Nook if you buy books from B&N's site you don't have to re-sync your Nook to the computer to get the books. You can DL via WIFI. I'm sure the Kindle can do the same as well. ;)
P.S. I was looking into the Kindle overseas for you. Looks like the current version is all good in Europe but the older versions are not. Didn't know if you already knew this?
@Gerbera: We'll be living in Asia, not Europe. I have several friends who have Kindles there who've said they had no trouble using them; they may have had to download to their computer and then transfer them like I'd have to with the Nook though. :/
I had a momentary memory lapse and confused you with another girl on here. Sowwie!
You get to go live in Asia for so long? I'm so jealous!!!
How?!? I would LOVE to go live there for like a year and then come back. <pouting face>
We have an iPad and had a Kindle until a few months ago when we sold it. The Kindle was cool for like the first few months that we had it but then we stopped using it and it sat in the box until we finally sold it. The iPad on the other hand, is used every single day. I don't use it all that often but FI does and he can't live without it.
We're big mac people so obviously the iPad gets my vote. The iPad does pretty much the same thing as the Kindle does as far as an e-reader is concenred but then it also offers SOOO much more. Honestly, I don't know why anyone would buy an e-reader over an iPad.
ETA: I would not suggest an iPad as a replacement for a laptop. It's awesome for bedtime or bathroom entertainment but if you try to use it as a primary computer, you'll get frusterated pretty quickly.
I'm obsessed with my Kindle. I already have a Macbook and an iPhone, so I don't really think I'd have much use for an iPad. I think if I had an iPad I would get too distracted and not use it for reading.
I have a Kindle and I love it...however, I wouldn't mind getting an ipad. :) If you can afford it get an ipad, if you can't, get a kindle. :) No need to get both.
@DesireeAnne: The size of books on the kindle (and thus iPhone) is not big--plus I only every "carry" one book on my iPhone at a time. Usually the one I'm reading on my kindle, so if I get stuck waiting for someone or something I can continue reading a few chapters while I'm waiting.
You can delete books of either device (the kindle or the phone) and amazon keeps track. So you can redownload it later if you want. So don't worry too much about memory.
As for me, I have a kindle, an iPhone and a MacBook Pro. No need for an iPad and I doubt I'd ever get one. I absolutely love my kindle though--I'll wait for a while to upgrade though until some new feature comes out that really changes the experience. (It gets a lot smaller, touch screen, better interface, etc.)
An iPad can be an eReader, but an eReader can't be an iPad. I'd get an iPad and then use it as my travel computer and couch internet-surfing computer!
I love love love my Kindle! It's pretty awesome because it's just like reading a book... no backlighting, doesn't hurt your eyes, and you can read it in direct sunlight or lamplight (and you can buy a booklight for it if you want to read it in the dark). I've played with ipads of my friends and it's basically a big iPhone, which I already have, so if you have a smartphone already go for the e-reader!
And I'm a huge Mac user, so it's hard for me to down my beloved Apple products, I just get way more use out of the e-reader because that's what I wanted to do - read. If you want to surf the net and get email, etc, go for the iPad :)
I have a 2nd gen kindle and I LOVE it. FI got it for me for my birthday 2 years ago.
There is absolutely NO glare issue (I spent a week reading in direct sunlight in Belize) and the battery life is awesome (3-4 weeks between charges when wifi is off).
Also, there are tons of free books. All the classics that are out of copyright are free and Amazon often has a bunch of lesser known authors books for free for the kindle as well.
I have an iPhone for apps and a mac-book as my computer, but I LOVE my kindle. I honestly cannot see much use for an iPad as it is hard to type on (without an external keyboard) and is too large to carry around easily. Plus, reading on a back-lit screen gives me a headache.
@Gerbera: My career is in Asia. I'm taking a few years off to be home for the wedding and to wrap up some loose ends with Hubby's current job, then we're headed back over. :) You can PM me if you've got more questions, haha, I don't talk about it on the boards much.
I'd get an E-reader!
I have a Sony E-reader that I LOVE! I've had it for a little over a year and it gets so much use and I will immeadiately replace it if something ever happens to it. It has no glare and a really long battery life. I read 5 books on my trip to Asia last week (and currently have 30 books in my unit).
DH just bought an iPad (took advantage of the price drop on the Gen1s with Gen2 coming out) and while it is kind of fun to screw around on with games and such, to me it is a novelty that in a very short time, I will never really use again. IMO, it is too large to reader use well as an e-reader so I don't agree with the whole "An iPad can be an eReader, but an eReader can't be an iPad" arguement either.
@Mrs.KMM: IMO, it is too large to reader use well as an e-reader so I don't agree with the whole "An iPad can be an eReader, but an eReader can't be an iPad" arguement either.
I guess this is just personal preferance since we use our iPad as an e-reader. As someone who has owned a Kindle, I personally think it is a much better experience on the iPad (and the iPad offers much more than an e-reader does). The arguement of "An iPad can be an eReader, but an eReader can't be an iPad" is absolutely true.
@daydreamwanderer: Just saw your question! Honestly, I don't know if I can answer fairly. I've only used it indoors so far. But I have a feeling the glare issue may be exaggerated a wee bit in the commercials to seel more Kindles. ;)

I know, I know ... two totally different pieces of technology. But I only have monies for one piece of technology right now (okay, actually, I only have monies for no technology right now, but I'm starting to save with my first paycheck from my new job :D) and I want both.
*harumph*
Do you have an iPad or an eReader (Kindle, Nook, etc.)?
-What do you own
-What do you mainly use it for (i.e. would the iPad just be a replacement for my laptop? And can an ereader do anything besides books?)
-What do you love/hate?
