Last night I was showing FI the video of the Maury show where Maury confronts a woman who is terrified of cotton balls by dressing up like a gigantic cotton ball and chasing her around. (search youtube if you've never seen this...it's beyond hysterical!)

This brought up the topic of weird and irrational fears that we/people have.

Mine?  Balloons.  I'm completely and utterly terrified of balloons.  I don't even like to be in the same room as them, and if one pops near me, forget about it.  Just thinking about them right now is making me feel icky.

My sister's is birds.  We got her a fake bird as a joke for Christmas one year and she nearly had a stroke when she opened it.

Anyone else with ridiculous and unfounded fears/phobias?

LOL I have to watch that Maury episode. That sounds funny. Wow balloons? They are so pretty and fun. I guess I never experienced having a phobia so its hard for me to understand, but my Aunt is deathly scared of Frogs. SHe even has gone to counseling or seeked help for it. I tell her, you are so much bigger than them! The counseling hasnt helped her yet but I believe there are ways to over come things. Like my Grandma used to smoke then went to a hypnotist and just like that quit smoking. So maybe that might help for your fears?!

HAHAHA!!  I dont meant to laugh but I have this image of a giant Maury cotton ball or a balloon chasing people around.

The only fear I have is flying.  I am TERRIFIED. TO. DEATH. to fly.  Im a little calmer with DH flying with me (bc if we go down, we both go down) but ugh...flying is the worst.  I even hate when he or my parents are flying and I am not.  Im getting a panic attack thinking about this

@KellyV: Seriously, YouTube it.  It's hilarious.

Flying is a legitimate fear.  A fear of an inanimate object that can do nothing to hurt you is ridiculous ;o)

@Kelly - I'm completely on board with you.  I'm terrified of flying too but I do it anyway.  White knuckle passenger all the way.  If I don't have at least 3-5 drinks in me before we board the plane I'm a wreck.

That is soooo weird, my two big irrational fears are balloons and birds!!! It's sometimes embarassing walking down the sidewalk when there are pidgeons present... I wish I could get over it but I just can't!

I have a funny story about balloon phobia! My sister is deathly afraid of them popping. About a week ago we went to a church-hosted Christmas dinner, and the entertainment was a magician. For one of his tricks he needed a volunteer to come up and help him. He picks my sister. She goes up to the front, he pulls out a balloon, and says "I'm going to put a needle through this balloon without it popping." And he pulls out this sixteen inch needle.

    Surprised

Back in the pew, my other sister and I look at each other and burst into laughter. The look on my sister's face as she stood up there was hysterical! She looked ready to kill someone! So she holds the balloon between her hands, refuses to open her eyes, and the guy gives her a hard time because her hands are shaking. But he tries the trick anyway. And the balloon pops. *cringe* So he does the trick again...but thankfully it didn't pop that time. She was tramautized, haha.

My phobia is needles. Pretty much anything doctor or hospital-related, really. Talking about shots is a surefire way to make me cry, have a panic attack, or pass out. Fun times.

I know people who are afraid of birds, fish, buttons....I don't know that i'm really afraid of anything 'irrational'. sometimes i go around a dark corner and my heart flutters a little bit, though, like i'm going to be pounced on. Sometmes even my own house =]

I can TOTALLY relate to the fear of birds. Oh dear, I can't stand them. I can't get within 10 ft of them. If theres a flock of birds blocking the sidewalk towards where ever i'm going i'll cross the street and go around to avoid them.

My FI planned a sweet picnic while we were traveling through London and that ended with me in tears because the birds got to close. Also while we were in Paris i ran for the entrance at the Louvre because of the birds while most people stayed outside to take a few pictures because of the gorgeous architecture.

I freak out at honking car horns on the streets of NYC. I've lived here for a while, so rationally, I should be used to it, but I'm not at all. Seriously, every time I get startled by a car horn, I jump and grab on to whoever I'm with...some of my friends are starting to get concerned :)

@songtokwok - OMG I am exactly the same, I have definitely crossed the street to avoid going near a bird before. I even get freaked when someone else gets too close to one because I am afraid it's going to start flying and might come near me. Lol.

I don't know if this is an irrational fear, but I hate spiders, like with the fiery passions of hell.  Don't even talk to me about them.  Just writing this creeps me out, yuck...

ETA: Also clowns, I really really don't like clowns.

My irrational fears are bugs and spiders.  Though I guess a lot of people have those fears.  Oh and I'm afraid that birds are going to peck my eyes out or bite your ears out.

And like ejs, I'm afraid of dark corners in my house like someone is going to be there and attack me.

I'm utterly terrified of submarines (the underwater vessels, not the sandwich). I scream and cry if I ever see one on tv or a movie, especially if it's submerging from the water. That just gave me the heebie jeebies to even type.

one of my closest friends is afraid of cotton - but more she doesn't like cotton touching her skin and she won't handle cotton at all!

I am 30 years old and I will absolutely admit my irrational fear is that I'm afraid of the dark. I have been since I was a child. It stems from being afraid of horror movies (i absolutely REFUSE to watch jason or freddy but I love stephen king movies/books. go figure! lol)

But even to this day - when I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom or something I'm so freakin' concious of my feet and thinking there's something under the bed that's gonna grab me - and I turn on the light in the hall before going into the living room and those lights have to be turned on too...

I'm afraid of going down into our basement at night alone even though we have a TON of stuff in our basement (it's not finished but our office, pool table, big screen tv, futon, etc are all down there it's our "party" room)

i know it's totally irrational - but i'm terrified of the dark.

OttawaBride2011 - LOL! Oh man, it's nice to know there are others like me. Laughing I also freak when other people get too close. My fear of birds however gets worse with pigeons. UGH. Just typing the word makes me cringe.

First...HAHAHAHA I know it's not nice to make fun but that video cracks me up!

Ok...so not totally irrational but I am terrified of driving behind those trucks that transport new cars...I'm so afraid one will become loose and fall on me.  I'm also terrified of seeing planes in the air because I fear that I would see one crash or spontaneously explode (which is weird to me because I have absolutely no phobia of flying since my job pretty much requires me to be on a plane often)

@ Junebride:  I have a fear of the dark related phobia too...I refuse to look at ANY mirror in the dark.  If I wake up in the middle of the night and have to go to the bathroom I keep my eyes closed because of the mirror!

I absolutely HATE grasshoppers, and praying mantis. They are so gross, my stomach turns at the thought of them. I understand that they are harmless. I do not care. So so creepy.

I also hate locusts. I seriously think that if there is one bug in the universe that is possessed by the devil, it is the locust. They make horrible loud noises and they will come straight AT you if you disturb them in any way. Be afraid. Be very afraid

I also really hate my attic. Thanks to the movie The Grudge, I cannot stand to be up there for more than 5 minutes.

I have an irrational fear of someone breaking in while I'm home alone. Its so bad, if I am home alone (i.e., FH is gone on vacay), I have to check every single window and door to make sure they are locked, and check every single room (including closets), before I can go to sleep. I also have to sleep on the main floor of our house, instead of upstairs, because I'm terrified someone will break in and I won't hear them if I'm sleeping upstairs in our bedroom. I won't buy a gun, but I do sleep with 3 big flashlights (heavy, like could kill someone if you hit them hard in the head with them), by the bed whenever I'm alone (which is better, as I used to have a butcher knife on the floor by my bed, lol see, *irrational!*)

It's irrational because we live in a good neighborhood in a city/state with low crime, and we live in an upper floor condo, and we've never had a break in. To break in, someone would either have to break into the vestibule, then come upstairs and break into my house, or climb up onto my balcony, then break into the sliding glass door.

I hate staying by myself! Oh, I also hate attics and basements. I take a flashlight with me everytime i do laundry, even though our basement is well lit!

Clowns.  Definitely clowns.  There is something just soooooooooooo creepy about them to me.  I feel like underneath all that happy-fun-time, they are terrible humans who just want to do awful things to small children & puppies.  I mean, seriously...  No offense to anyone who went to clown college or anything.  I'm sure you're a lovely exception to the rule.  LOL.

Ugh, I had a roommate once who had the King book IT on the bookshelf.  I wouldn't even go near the shelf it was on.

Oh yeah, I just remembered this one too...

Underpasses.. When I have to drive under the highway, I'm always worried that it is going to collapse and crush me in my car. Super freaky.

My hubby is all mr. sunny-pants, and doesn't understand why I worry about stuff like that.. but oh well. It's just me.

Artbee - I had forgotten about fireworks!  When I was little I was sure they were going to land on me and burn me and could NOT understand why my parents weren't concerned!  I remember making a run for the house once, positive that one was going to land on the back of my neck.  I'm better about it now but I still REALLY dislike loud bangs.  Rodeo clowns, unfortunately, seem to really like them so I'm frequently covering my ears.

I saw a show where this lady had these worm things under her scalp and they would come up out of these little holes. FREAKS. ME. OUT. BAD.

My irrational fear has almost gone away in time, but there is still a hint of it there. In 4th grade I accidentally watched the movie "Fire in the Sky" and pretty much did not sleep for a year. I seriously thought I was going to be abducted by aliens. Over the years, the fear lessened, but if I even see one of those stupid drawings made by "abducted" people, I have a little panic attack. And god forbid I even see one of those shows listed on the tv guide. I have to make sure I skip over that channel if I'm clicking through.

My SIL is terrified of styrofoam. If it rubs together she absolutely freaks out. We like to pack her Christmas and birthday gifts in it.

omg I  have lots of weird things...

I can't stand getting an IV, having blood drawn, or even getting my blood pressure taken because I hate that feeling! I spaz out...I feel sick just writing it.

I freak out when anyone touches my wrists, neck, ankles, backs of my knees. So yes, having my pulse taken is awful for me.

I'm so afraid of snakes and spiders...I also have nightmares about scorpions which makes no sense because I've never seen one or been somewhere they can really live.

I have a huge, crazy fear of stairs. I can go up them all day, not think twice. But, if I'm at the top of a stairwell and look down, I go into cold sweats, I get double vision, I am so afraid I will fall down them. The worst are stairs that are metal grating, where you can look down and see through them.

Even writing this is making my palms sweat.

Needles, the dark, flying over the ocean.

But flying over the ocean is so not irrational.

My mom hates bridges, she use to close her eyes when she drove over them- she did this when driving with her college roommate and understandably her roommate flipped.
