Does anyone else still get worried about telling their parents certain things?
I just got my first tattoo on Friday (at age 31…), and I am still a little freaked out about my parents finding out. Granted, they live several thousand miles away so it isn’t like they could hunt me down or anything. I know it is still a completely irrational thing to worry about. I just can’t help it!
Likewise, I still think that I’ll feel a bit weird about telling my parents when we get pregnant. Obviously they know we are married/sleep in the same room/lost our virginities loooong ago, but it still seems weird to say “Hey….we are doing the nasty, Mom & Dad!!! Now I’m knocked up!!” I’d put it more eloquently, of course, and I’m more than sure they’d be happy, but it is still a strange fear of mine (kind of like them finding out I skipped Easter Sunday Mass this year…and the past three years…).
Sometimes I eat ice cream for dinner, in bed, and I’ll neglect to brush my teeth afterwards. I once left a gallon of expired milk in the refrigerator for over a month before taking it out to the dumpster. Yikes. I’ll go ahead and put myself in a corner now.
I’m not sure why it is that I still get knots in my stomach about telling them certain things, and it is actually pretty funny when I think about it. Anyone else have things that they are reluctant to admit to their parents, even now as adults?

Oh my gosh, yes! I’m the biggest wimp about fessing up to things they wouldn’t approve of. The worst was when I didn’t tell them for months that FH had moved in with me. I knew they wouldn’t like us living together outside of marriage. But they actually took it pretty well, then changed the subject quickly. 🙂
Sometimes it makes me laugh and think to myself “You’re twenty-friggin-seven, for goodness sake!”.

@Mrs.DBee: LOL…Glad I’m not alone!! The first night that my (now) DH stayed over with me while we were still dating, my parents came for a surprise visit the next morning. He had JUST walked out the door before they got there, and I was trying to remove all evidence of having a sleepover from their sight. I think the bottles of man-shampoo in my bathroom gave it away. Oops!

Yes, My Dad was upset with me for getting my nosed pierced at age 23.

I am the same way. When I was pregnant (at the age of 23), I told my mom via a text message (with me sitting across the room from her.) I BEGGED her to tell my dad but she would not, lol. I’m such a wimp!

I’m with you; I’ve hid a tattoo for 7 years and they still dont know my FI + I live together (I’m out-of-state) so I figure I will tell them after the wedding. I went sky-diving last weekend, and didn’t even tell them until after! I’m not going to change their minds on things, so I save myself the headache by keeping it to myself…haha

My sister got a tat of a grateful dead bear in her bikini area. Our mom found out about it when my sister had her first kid! Beat that for awkward lol.

@Katnisseverdeen: This is why I’m planning on NEVER wearing sleeveless tops around my parents ever again! LOL I still hate disappointing them!
@TiffanyBlue91011: That sounds exactly like something I would do. Or I’d probably take an even wimpier way out and tell my sister to tell them for me!!

@anabell465: Do you make your FI stay completely quiet when you are on the phone with your parents so they don’t hear him in the background? 😉 “Honey, you’re going to have to go hide in the closet and sit quietly while I talk to my Mom on the phone.” 😛
@pharmy: Super awkward! But hopefully the joy of the occasion overshadowed her disappointment about the Deady Bear tattoo!! LOL

Every time I do something parents wouldn’t approve of, I take a moment and relish in the glory that is being an adult. No guilt here!

Me!! I’m 26 and just married and when we get pregnant I know I’m going to feel slightly weird telling them! Is like they KNOW you had sex… It’s so irrational but I can’t help feel that way lol

@MrsPom: Not irrational at all! I have the same fears.. It’s just weird to think about. Just like I pretend my baby sister who basically lives with her boyfriend is a virgin, lol.

This post made me giggle. 😀
I don’t think I have that anymore, but I remember when I was in college and a guy took me on the back of his motorcycle for our first date (hottest. first. date. ever.) and I didn’t tell my parents for YEARS.

I have this fear every now and then lol! I think we just never want to dissapoint our parents lol. Although I have done many things they have not approved of in my 23 years. Like moving in with my SO and not telling them for like a year!
@Mrs.DBee: You are not alone!
I think they are used to my antics though, like getting my nose pierced, both the side and septum, and my tattoo. I didn’t hide these things because I have been financially independent since I was 18 and haven’t live at home since I was 17.
I would feel so weird telling them I’m pregnant if and when I am. Like PP said, I’m sure they know I have sex but ew I rather pretend they have no idea that happens lol.

I’m not this way about everything (like, I’m pretty sure I’ll have no problem telling them once I’m pregnant).
But I have a tattoo I want to get on my foot some time this year and I dread the day they first see it because I know how much they don’t approve of tattoos.
