    Almost gobble gobble day!

This is something my fiance and I always (jokingly) bicker about. I'm a dressing girl, and he prefers stuffing. (For those that aren't sure about the difference, stuffing is traditionally cooked INSIDE the turkey, and dressing is cooked outside of the pan in a casserole dish).

So what team are you on? Dressing or stuffing?

I don't really like it! I'm sure i would if it was homemade, but i've always had the boxed kind...it's a little lackluster I guess

I didn't know the difference! My family are pigs - grandma cooks both b/c the turkey can never hold enough to satisfy us. She stuffs the turkey and make a couple dishes of additional "dressing." You would think we were a family of 30 and not a family of 10 LOL.

We eat beef tenderloin stuffed with garlic and rosemary for Christmas. Mmm.

Our dressing recipe has been handed down from generation to generation, so it's ridiculously good. We even bake fresh cornbread for it and then use that (same day) for the dressing. Is a long day for us. :p

Um . . . whta does the dressing refer to? Gravy?  I am for stuffing generally though.

Oh, I never knew the difference! I thought it was all called stuffing - because my family is a big fan of Stove Top Stuffing - made in the microwave.  I think one time my mom stuffed the bird and it tasted delish!  Usually we just pop it in the microwave though - so I guess while I appreciate a good stuffing, we usually have dressing.

@Carbon Girl- Dressing is stuffing cooked outside of the turkey.

I said dressing because I think it's normally drier than the stuffing that's cooked inside the bird. It can't be too mushy. I'm one of those weird people that likes corner food: corner brownies, corner cake, and even corner noodle dishes even if they are a bit dried out.

I like dressing because I like a lot of it.  :)  There's never enough room inside that d*$% bird for all the dressing I want to eat!  For Christmas, we eat ham.

@hcrit- I'm a corner girl too. I love dressing, but I HATE (aka have a huge irrational fear) of wet bread, so our dressing can't ever be too wet or I get grossed out. lol

Did you know that now they say you're not supposed to stuff the bird? Something about it not being safe to eat.

I think we cook it outside of the turkey, but still call it stuffing... I guess that's kind of weird. But I'm with Miss Spaniel - mashed potatoes!!!

@FB- Yeah, I've heard that. There's a way to remedy it, but I can't remember. The reasoning is because of salmonella (I think) going to town in the stuffing and not getting cooked out.

Huh. We have always used two different recipes and call one of them dressing and one of them stuffing. The dressing recipe is really smooth and simple and passed down from my grandmother (we basically mix bread and celery and onion with sage and thyme and salt and then slaughter it in the food processor with turkey fat and chicken broth). She says it is NOT stuffing and don't call it that because stuffing is chunky, so we don't. The stuffing recipe uses big chunks of bread and has apples and raisins in it. It is drier than the dressing recipe. I switch off which one gets stuffed inside the turkey each year.

I think they both taste good, but I think since we use the drippings from the turkey it makes them both taste better. If I had to choose from your selections, I would say stuffing.

Dressing! Although I must say, vegetarians can have stuffing too! Tofurkey sells a roast with stuffing already in it. I am seriously impressed with the strides that have been made in veggie food.

But 50, I'm with ya... stuffing is too dry for my taste.

I said dressing because stuffing grosses me out. There is a huge risk of salmonella with stuffing because if you cook the turkey to the recommended temperature the stuffing doesn't get to a high enough temperature to kill the salmonella ... if you cook the turkey so that the stuffing comes to a high enough temp - the turkey is creamated ...

I figure no one is into thanksgiving food poisoning.

I always ask if the stuffing was in the turkey, if it was - I won't eat it (which is a shame because I LOVE dressing)

According to every resource I have found out of curiosity, there technically is no difference other than the name being regional. The food itself is the same no matter whether it's cooked inside the turkey or outside and that has no bearing whatsoever on the name itself.

All that said, because there is no difference, I call it by both names and so does everyone else I know. It's yummy and that's all that matters in the end.

Stuffing!  My grandmother makes the best sausage stuffing in the world.  In fact, it's a tradition for us to "try it" before it goes in the oven to make sure it's seasoned correctly, and now that I think of it, that's pretty gross.  There's lots of raw stuff in there!  Maybe that's why I have a stomach of steel ;o)

Oyster stuffing! Dressing? It's cooked outside the bird. But it is oh-so-very-yummy.

Stuffing is not very sanitary (can pick up bacteria from the chicken or turkey), so I prefer dressing. My favorite thing on Thanksgiving though is home made cranberry sauce poured all over the turkey meat with gravy on top, yuuuuuuuuum.

We usually do a Ham with pineapple for Christmas!

Stuffing! I'd never heard about the increased risk for salmonella, but it's not going to stop me from encouraging my mom to stuff that turkey. Salmonella? Pfft. We live dangerously. ^_^ Mmm...stuffing. Especially when it gets mixed into the green bean casserole or gravy...salivating at my desk, here.

Speaking of it being mushy, it surprises me that I can even eat stuffing, but I <3 it! If bread gets the least bit soggy on a normal day, just looking at it gags me a little. So how do I manage to keep spooning in soggy stuffing and loving every bite? Tongue out
