I’m interested in a new position within my company. This is the first time an opening has come up that I feel I am a good candidate for. My issue is that I work directly under the the Sr. VP/GM. I want to talk to HR about applying for this job but I’m 80% sure it will get back to my boss and I’m afraid he’ll hold a grudge.
Basically I’m not sure if I should risk talking with HR about this position. Any advice? I’m pretty close with the HR director and I’ve spoken with her before about openings but its always been hypothetical. There’s never been a position I actually wanted to transfer to.

So its a new position? I would go talk to the HR director you are close with. Be sure to say something along the lines of, “I just happened to notice this, I wasn’t looking for change but I think I would be perfect for this” Keep the focus on the fact that this is something that just “popped” up and not something you were looking for that way if it gets back to your boss you can tell him you’re not actively searching for a new job or change it just came up.

That’s tough and exactly why I hate the transfer policy at the hospital I work at. If we want to apply to a different department, we first have to have our application/transfer request SIGNED by our current department manager before even applying or interviewing for the job. So, if you don’t get the job then your boss knows that you’re looking and could hold a grudge.
