Seems totally dumb to me.

I absolutely think helmets should be required for all motor cycle riders.  As you said, seat belts are required in cars and I could definitely make the argument that a helmet to a motorcyclist is MORE important than a seatbelt to a car rider.

ETA: Not that I would ever encourage someone to not wear a seatbelt in a car.

I live in a state with no helmet law and I think it’s stupid to get on a motorcycle without head protection.  I used to work in a level II trauma center (ER) and I can tell you that helmets really can save lives.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.  You’re required to wear seatbelts in a car, but no helmet on a motorcycle?  Wow.

I guess I’m in the camp that thinks the dumb part is that the government has to MANDATE that we wear seatbelts or helmets.  If we’re all adults who have a modicum of common sense, we shouldn’t have to be told to wear these things, it’s freaking COMMON SENSE.  I kinda have a Darwinian outlook to this: if someone is stupid enough to get on a motorcycle without a helmet and something happens to them…well?  They probaly shouldn’t have done it in the first place.  Survival of the fittest.  That may sound mean, but I really don’t think laws need to tell adults to try to protect their own lives…if someone chooses to take a chance at smashing their skull against the pavement or getting thrown through their windsheild, that’s their problem.

Not wearing a helmet is stupid. But I’m not sure regulating and enforcing adults headwear is the best use of the governments time.

I can’t imagine why they would even give anyone an option. As PPs said, there are laws about seatbelts, why on earth would anyone decide being on a motorcycle without a helmet is perfectly acceptable?

Profoundly stupid. Helmets are mandatory here in Ontario, as they should be be. My father was a paramedic for many years and I cant count the number of times he told us about bikers he had to “scrape off the pavement”. Bikes are dangerous enough, not wearing a hemlmet is pure suicide.

@msfahrenheit:  Yes, but in the long run it saves lives. In the 50’s, people smoked in much higher rates than they do now, folks didn’t wear seat belts etc. But the government made laws and now, yes, folks still drive without seat belts and yes, they do still smoke, but overall, the rates are much lower. I do think the government should make this a law AND enforce it. Although a part of me thinks that if you need the government to tell you that you need to wear a helmet when riding/driving a motocycle, then you have other things wrong with you!

@MrsDrRose612:  But what about the young kid who gets on his new bike and doesn’t want to look ‘uncool’ so he opts to not wear a helmet.  If it was mandatory to wear a helmet on a motorcycle then he wouldn’t even have to worry about that.  Just a thought…

I hate the idea of it. My dad rides and now that this is passed i know he wont wear his helmet. He got into an accident a few years back when a 16yr old had jsut gotten her license and ran him off the road. luckily he was ok but his bike was totalled.
