I couldn't bare to write the word in the title but she has diarrhea. Our carpet was soaked and we have no idea for how long because she did it over night. The smell is just disgusting and FH is at work and Idk what to do to get the smell away. So when he gets home we are going to rent a steam cleaner for the carpets because they're stained. We live in an apartment so we don't have access to a hose so we have to bring the crate to the carwash, I'm not kidding lol FH wanted to throw it out but then we remembered how much we paid for the damn thing and scratched that idea. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?! I'm so exhausted because I've been up dealing with this since 3:45 AM.

Mix 1/3 cup hydrogen peroxide in with 2/3 cup of water, add a teaspoon of baking soda.   You probably want to test the mix on  a lil corner of carpet, but I haven't had any problems with discoloration, but definatley test it first.  then dump it on and let it sit there for a couple minutes and blot away.  After it dries a bit youmight want to rinse the rest of the mix away with water and vinegar.  The vinegar smells but it really helps neutralize odors too, even though it smells at first.

Good luck, sorry you're off to a rough day.

    AW. Poor Puppy.

Will the crate (just the flat bed portion) fit in your bathtub? If you go to a pet store they'll usually have pet shampooer for accidents. Renting a carpet shampooer might night be necessary? Unless it's that bad?

If you puppy is continuing to have diarrhea, I would call your vet and ask if they can make a recommendation over the phone for the problem.  At the very least, they should be able to tell you when to come into the office if the issue doesn't resolve.  Did you change the puppy's food recently?  Sorry, I don't have a lot of suggestions about the carpet...

I don't really have any suggestions for the carpet other than the steam cleaner and bissel pet formula - we used that when our puppy had diarrhea all over our living room and it worked.

Make sure you keep an eye on her and make sure she gets lots of fluids - when this happened with our puppy it turns out he had eaten a bit of his bedding and it cause inflamation of his stomach so he had to be put on pain meds and an antibiotic to clear it all up.  It was awful

    Good luck!

That sucks - that happened to us once and it was a mess to clean :-(  The best thing to do is rent a steam cleaner ASAP - that really got everything out of our rugs.  Also, try to get something in your pup's stomach.  My vet usually recommends some white rice, which will calm any inflamations in the pup's belly and hopefully put an end to everything.  And of course leave out plenty of fresh water to get her hydrated - if she won't drink (mine doesn't when she's sick), you can try to add a bit of low sodium chicken broth to the water (just for taste) and that will usually entice the dog to drink more.

    Good luck!!

Wow! Thanks for all the suggestions ladies! She's doing ok now she just woke up from a nap (lucky her i've been up this whole time because i have to be ready to run outside with her if she needs to *go* lol) and she's playing with her bone and an icecube. i gave her the icecube because she loves them and she isn't drinking her water anymore (she was drinking it earlier). she's running around and looks much better but i am still going to feed her the rice and chicken diet today! (thanks for that suggestion! ktdid!) i wish i had the vehicle today cuz i'd be at petsmart picking that stuff up right now!

@daydreamwanderer trust me i have like tons of candles burning lol i might have to buy some more! hehe

If your pup is still experiencing diarrhea, canned pumpkin (NOT SWEETENED) and mix it in with her/his food.  Only a about 1-2tsp.  When either of my dogs has loose bowels, I always do the canned pumpkin until it's more solid (the poopie...eeek.)

Yup, I was just going to say, 100% PURE canned pumpkin from the pie/baking aisle. For a small puppy I would say 1tsp or a bit less. I give my 50 lb dog 1 tbsp if that helps you gage.

It's the poop cure all. If it's runny it helps firm it up, and if it's not coming at all it helps get things moving :-)

The ice is great, make sure she stays hydrated, keep her on the rice/chicken, and I would also withhold treats that are edible.

If you don't have one already, a spot bot pet cleaner can be a lifesaver!

when this happens, i've always given my puppy a small spoon full of plain yogart. that settles their stomachs pretty quickly and they love it. for the carpets, you can dilute vinegar down and it will get rid of the odor and and staining. it's a cheap and easy method and works everytime. also use this if your puppy is having trouble with potty training.

sounds like you have it covered, tho!

    plain yogurt works great.

But also make sure that the diarrhea isn't bloody or that it isn't "muddy" looking, parvo could be the cause, which would be a life threatening condition.  I would take her to the vet if it is discolored at all.  But if it is normal colored you can just keep an eye on it and give her some plain yogurt and make sure you aren't giving her alot of peanut butter or treats, but it could also be a sensitive stomach if you have switched foods.

    Good luck!

I 2nd the comment about parvo.  If your puppy might have parvo, the earlier you treat it, the better...I won't say more w/o sounding debbie downer, but it progresses very quickly!  Not sure if you would notice the smell if you haven't been around it, but often parvo has an extra gross smell, that is more than just a 'poopy smell'.

Also, my dog got (no idea how to spell) giardhea when she was a puppy.  The area has a lot of that, so we didn't treat her until we were moving, so she wouldn't take it w/ her to TX.  In general, when she gets sick, she is supposed to skip the next meal.  Then, sometimes I make her white rice with lowfat cottage cheese & steamed veggies (you might need to double check the veggies are OK).  My sister is a vet, and this is her recommendation for my dog.

Dogs can actually take pepto bismol, either chewables or liquid, to help with diarrhea.

If you are going to feed him rice, it should be plain white rice, nothing whole grain.  The point is for it to be easily digestible.

yea we have cottage cheese here but it's not plain it has fruit in it. damn! the rice is good but we only have whole grain rice i hope that's ok. i know it's not parvo because i know the symptoms and that is usually more common with younger pups who haven't had their parvo shot which she has already gotten. i think she's ok now though because she hasn't had any diarrhea since early, early this morning and she's playing with her toys again which she wasn't doing before. wish us luck!

Also, our cat had diarrhea for the first three months we had him.  So I can relate.  ;)  One time he had it all over the floor at midnight.  We cleaned it up, cleaned him up, and went back to bed hoping it was all a nightmare.

If you can't rent a carpet cleaner, the Woolite rug stick that you can get at grocery stores works pretty well.

OH no! i mean i'd like to think cleaning dog diarrhea up is worse (coming from a home where we had cats ever since i was a baby lol) but washing a cat is far worse than washing a dog so i give you soo much credit and hope you managed to get it done with few or no scratches! We tried Resolve and this special dog cleaner and it didn't do anything! The carpets are still stained from her so anything we try next has to hopefully work magic or else we're skrewed with our apt. management haha

This link is SUPER informative, you should fast the pup for 12 hours then feed the pumpkin and chicken and white rice, the pumpkin apparently is a digestive regulator and the chicken and white rice is nice and bland so it won't irritate anything that was going on.  http://www.wikihow.com/Treat-Dog-Diarrhea.  For the carpets you'll definitely want to get a steam cleaner ASAP this will help remove any bacteria in case the pup has giardia or anything like that (we just had a friend who went through this and giardia was the cause which is transmitaable to humans so be careful - it's not deadly or anything). What about the Natures Miracle stuff? Not sure if that's just for the smell but it might help. Usually the people at Petco know what they're talking about so I'd go and ask there.

wow cricket thank you! i mean she looks fine now and she hasn't had to *go* except for peeing and shes chewing on her toys right now. she looks a lot better so idk if her episode this morning was just her body ridding it of food it didnt like (we switched her foods on sunday)or if she is sick or if its something worse. i'm going to monitor her and her stools though and obviously not feed her dog food for another day or two.  i mean i'll gradually get her back into it.

@ roddy bride- i had no idea either!

just a note about parvo (this isn't directed toward busybride2be just everyone in general)... Parvo doesn't have to happen in just really young dogs (although most common... also most common in Rottweilers).  However, vaccinating dogs against parvo doesn't completely protect them from getting it (especially if they got the vaccine very early).  Dogs get antibodies from their mother's milk which can suppress the effectiveness of vaccines up until they are 18 weeks old!  Which can leave your dog unprotected for up to a year when you go to get their annual shot.  Parvo can affect adult dogs as well, although less common... And if a dog with parvo potties outside, that ground can carry the virus for up to 6 months!

Like I said, that wasn't directed toward busybride2be, I just know that there are alot misconceptions about Parvo...

@busybride2be:  I'm glad your little one is feeling better... My poor boy had a throwing up fit today so it's just not a good day for doggie's today!

You should gather a fecal sample and take it to your vet for analysis. This is normally pretty cheap ($15 at my vet). They can make sure she doesn't have any worms or other parasites.

Also, I haven't had a puppy in years, but I foster kittens and have found that CANNED PUMPKIN (plain, not pie filling) works wonders when they have the runs.

Of course, as others have said, a vet's advice is always the best. Glad your puppy is feeling better, but be sure to continue to monitor her and if symptoms continue/worsen, you should take her to a vet. Dehydration can become very serious VERY quickly in young animals.

Good luck, I'm sure puppy will be healthy again in no time!

Not sure which thing you want help on to be honest. But I think that woolite pet is the best cleaner. It gets out almost everything (except make up- but the carpet cleaner guy couldn't even get that out). After it dries if it still stinks put down baking soda for 15 min to an hour. Make sure she's drinking a lot, if she doesn't drink go out and buy some clear pediatlyte (no idea if I spelled that right) and take a dropper and giver her some. Aslo try to figure out what is causing her illness.

****all the recommendations I got from my vet for my teacup poodle. My vet is a country vet that believes in home remedies when possible.

I just saw that you said you switched her food this weekend.  That's probably what caused it.  Even if you transition them slowly (like work your way up to half new/half old over the course of a few days minimum) that can still cause an upset tummy.  And like other have said, canned pumpkin is awesome as is plain yogurt, just make sure it has active cultures in it.

thank you everyone! but i have a question, the room she had the biggest accident in, smells to high heaven :-x it's gross. the carpet is completely stained and we can't scrub clean it. someone recommended baking soda but how do i go about that? also will that woolite stuff work on dry stains??

@ the comment about parvo- i tried typing your name in but there were too many characters to remember lol anyway thank you for explaining parvo better for people who may not know what it is exactly. just so you know (without sounding snotty! so don't take this the wrong way)i do know what it is and the truth is, it is more deadly for puppies because their immune systems aren't as strong and having the parvo shot lessens her chances of getting it drastically. plus the only sign of it or any sickness that she was showing was diarrhea. she has been totally fine too since yesterday morning! thank God because i couldn't clean up anymore *mess* lol i'm pretty sure it had to do with the switching of food though. but thank you hun for the good explanation and for the well wishes!!

For the baking soda you have to rewet the carpet first.  But I wouldn't just use water, to really get at the stain mix in a little hydrogen peroxide and dishsoap with the water.  Then put it on the stain, and blot some of the water up.  If you put baking soda down, leave it for awhile and then you can vaccum it up once it dries, only thing is, it can get a bit messy that way and depending on what type of vaccum you have, clog it.  So I don't use the baking soda method and instead then put vinegar down.   The vinegar odor goes away once it dries but it works wonders for smells. Learned because 1) I like red wine   2)  I'm not coordinated - so there's accidents  3) We foster dogs, who are often tiny baby puppies, and they also have accidents  4)  I'm cheap and it works better than anything I've bought

@ busybride- i wasn't saying you didn't know about parvo, I was just explaining for others who might not know.  I work at an animal shelter and a TON of people who come in have NO IDEA about parvo.  But you are right, it is much deadlier in puppies, in adult dogs it tends to me alot milder and very treatable.  Also by working in an animal shelter parvo is a very real problem and an ever present topic when we have new/young dogs so it's always the first thing that comes to mind when there is diahrrea.
