I would do it–I love to spoil the hell out of people, and from comments you have made on other posts your FMIL seems pretty cool. Like you said, if you did it at a restaurant the amount of time you would have to put into it is pretty minimal, and if you started planning now it probably wouldn’t be too overwhelming.

I think if you can try to handle all the details a few weeks before your wedding, it should be no problem.

Is there anyone else that could also help with the planning?

I would definitely go for it!   I would pick a restaurant that’ll handle much of it for you… so you wouldn’t need much for decor and picking a menu would be fairly simple.

Where would you do it?

Sounds super fun!

With the exception of my 1st birthday, I never had a birthday party, either.  I decided to throw one for myself when I turned 30… it was ok, but not the same as having someone do it for you πŸ™‚  now FI and I have our birthdays 11 days apart (same year!) so maybe next year we’ll have a big shindig πŸ™‚

and you know… if you need a party planner, I happen to know someone who will have PLENTY of time on her hands after the end of June, ha!

I went to an OOT wedding with a double surprise birthday party the day after. It was great! It was much more laid back and casual than the wedding. What i couldn’t believe is how all 100 drunk guest kept it a secret from them during the wedding!

I think we should throw each other a surprise party, ha!

The last jerkyface I dated (before FI) from Clifton Park got an amazing surprise 35th birthday party courtesy of me.  Amazing home made food from me and my mom, great location with a big pool and plenty for kiddoes to do, and I even got his father to come into town from Eastern MA, Coccadotts custom cake, another custom cake from me and tons of fun.  Jerkface.  I can’t exactly ask my parents to let me do the same for FI just one year later, you know? πŸ˜‰

Hmm, what if you did a lunch or brunch at the resort the next day?  You could keep FMIL in the loop a little, call it a thank you lunch/brunch?   I would imagine many of the people would be at the wedding?

I’ve done a few bridal/baby showers at Bellini’s in Clifton Park, it was AWESOME.   I think Olde Bryan Inn may do parties, or Longfellows.  Longfellows pricing is fairly reasonable.

I’ll have to do some digging for some more locations I think!

@UpstateCait:  It totally was!  Jerkface.  πŸ™‚

What about Batcheller Mansion?  or Gideon Putnam?  I have a former colleague working there and at the Saratoga Hilton as well.

If you wanted to go a little more north, how about the Log Jam?  It’d be on the way home from the wedding and it’s not too bad for lunch.

Have you asked R?  She may have some suggestions for you as well.

It will probably be stressful but I think you should do it.  You might even find yourself relieved to have everything done in one weekend and then be able to relax afterward.  It’s great to hear that you love your FMIL so much and want to do something so nice for her.  Good luck!
