I was reading the thread about things you didn’t know were a “thing” until WB and there was some interesting discussion going on about US schools. We had all of last week off due to weather and are back at it this week. I have shared a few times that this year has been a real struggle for me. I’ve questioned the school I’m at and whether or not teaching is the right career for me. I’ve dealt with more challenging (both academically and behaviorally) students than I did last year, and have had to learn to cope with teaching an overall low functioning group of students. Even with this, I realized I’ve had several successes this year.
1. I’m one of the first teachers at our brand new high school! It was a legendary moment to open this school and while it has been extremely difficult, it feels pretty cool to be a part of this opening group.
2. I’ve created a positive classroom atmosphere for my 9th graders. They enjoy coming to my class even if they really, really struggle with English.
3. Our first semester was friggin crazy. We are piloting a tech 1:1 ratio so our students all have iPads. They didn’t arrive on time, and we had to change our plans, which meant we had to read Lord of the Flies completely in class…it took 10 weeks. 10! My students hated the book and I did too. This semester, however, we are reading much more engaging texts and they are really enjoying class. It feels like we are having fun again (like last year).
4. My students are reading….they’re reading! They have contracted a specific number of pages to read this semester for either an A, B, or C and must read that amount over three months. We got to talk books (!) and they were excited. It was a wonderful moment.
What are your struggles and successes this year?
