So…that husband and wife who shot up a Walmart in Las Vegas this past weekend…they killed a shopper, two cops, and then themselves. I thought the wife looked familiar in the mugshots that were in the news. Then I saw a story about them on the website of my hometown newspaper.
I went to Facebook…she was on my friend list, and when I saw the maiden name, I realized that I went to high school with this girl. In fact, we were in orchestra together. I’m shocked…I didn’t know her very well as I was a few years older, but she was very sweet every time I talked to her, if a little shy and quiet. The husband isn’t from the area.
It’s shocking me to read the news. I’m so sad for her family. I’m sickened to read about the racist, fringe movements she and her husband found themselves into when the left Indiana to go Nevada (apparently to support that rancher who’s having a stand off with the federal government.) It doesn’t match the memories I have of her (but again, we weren’t close. I am a minority, and I can say she never seemed to treat me any differently.)
I emailed my orchestra director this morning. He’s devastated. I’m just in shock. Have any of you ever had a similar experience? I don’t live in my hometown anymore, but it’s pretty small. My mom said there have been reporters all over. It’s so surreal.
