So I usually don't watch the show "Hoarders" because it gives me pretty intense anxiety (plus, DH laughs at me because I immediately start cleaning the house and throwing things away!), but I caved and put on an episode tonight.

I guess I'm wondering what causes hoarding to happen in the first place?  I see these people who are attached to things, yet close themselves off to real relationships.  Is this compulsion?  A "disease"? A bad habit that simply needs to be broken?

Any bees out there who have a tendency to hoard, or know somebody who does?  I'm not trying to be uncharitable -- I guess I just want to understand this very perplexing habit...

From what I know it is usually related to a traumatic experience or immense loss in the persons life that causes them to not have the ability to emotionally detach themselves from certain things. At least that's what I've gathered from the show.

It is so interesting for me to see.  Most emotional trauma affects people in ways that are unseen, but this one harbors very physical and visible tendencies.  It pains me to see the anxiety that the people are dealing with on this show...

Like with all mental illness, there's no one specific cause. A lot of it may also be a genetic predisposition (there have actually been a couple shows where they follow the kids and how they show hoarding tendencies as well). That being said it is a form of obsessive compulsive disorder and is highly tied to panic and anxiety disorders.
