Hey Ladies, I need some advice.
My parents are really pressuring me to tell them what I want for graduation. They wanted to get me a class ring, but I know I would never, ever wear it. So my mom asked me to come up with some ideas.
I want it to be something I will actually want to use for a long time. I also don't want it to be more than $500, since they are putting a huge amount of money towards my graduation party and towards my wedding next year.
I have thought of..
-A strand of pearls and matching earrings
-A Citizen Eco-Drive watch
-A Tiffany charm bracelet
But other than that, I am at a loss...
What did you get for your college graduation?
Umm...my parents paid for my rent for the next two years while I was in grad school. Pretty good present :) I didn't get anything tangible like what you mean though, but all those options sound nice!
Student loans to pay off! Lucky me! lol...
My dad and stepmom gave me $$ to buy a suit to go on interviews.. it was nice b/c I def didn't want to spend my own money on something so boring :)
I got a beautiful watch:

The face is reversible and the back has my monogram on it. I absolutely love it.
I think I got about $300 from my dad and his parents. My MIL (then FMIL) gave me a travel bag. My grandmother gave me a blank check to pay for my first student loan payment because she kept asking what I wanted and I never told her.
I didn't get anything. I guess my present was college :)
I got new golf clubs!!! It was an awesome present, fi and I really enjoy golfing together (he's jealous of my clubs though, lol).
I got a pat on the back and a nice dinner :) My parents were having a really hard time financially and had to fly down to come to my graduation, I was just happy they came.
I was supposed to get the Adobe Creative Suite, but my mom forgot and no amount of reminding her really worked, so I just let it go since now she's paying for the wedding. My sister got an iPod, so that's an idea, too.
I think from your list, the pearls sound great. That's something that you could keep forever, really.
I got a Canon G11. My birthday was a week before I graduated, so this worked as a combination present (and one that I'll definitely use for a long time!).

Luckily, my parents aren't a penny in debt for my education. I am Ojibwe, and my tribe paid for almost all of my college, and my scholarships picked up the rest. I am very thankful for this situation.
Thanks for all the advice guys.. There is such variety.
a frame for my diploma.......but they also paid all of my tuition!
I got a nice dinner and part of my debt "forgiven" on my car. I owned my parents money for my car (I'd bought it from them) and they lowered the amount I owed them. So essencially, I got money!
They had also helped pay for school (although were in no debt from doing so - they'd saved for it my whole life) so that in and of itself was a huge gift!
DH (then SO) got me a fancy frame for my diploma.
@BeeKiss2- I like it! I am half, my Dad is Ojibwe and my mom is 2nd gen. Norwegian, so I am a very unique combo.
I just found out that my kind of rich uncle might be giving me a car. My mom is horrible about secrets. I just got into a car accident, so my car is on the fence and I am trying my best to not get to excited about the prospect of a car.
I graduated from the University of FL so our mascot is the Gators and my mom got me a Waterford Alligator. It will be nice to display once we have a house, but at the moment it is just boxed up in my room along with most of my stuff.
Asking them to frame your diploma would be a nice present. That is what my mom did for FI and I for Christmas this year.
Hm... I don't remember getting anything but I have a super terrible memory. They helped me pay rent through law school though so regardless I'd say I lucked out in the parent department :)
From undergrad my father and stepmom gave me a Rolex watch engraved with my graduation date and Sevo girl, RN since I had just completed nursing school.
My parents left it up to me and my sister to pick what we wanted within a certain budget. I got a pearl necklace from Tiffanys (which I will be wearing for the wedding!), my sister went to Mexico with a bunch of her friends the week after graduation.
I got a sapphire ring with diamonds around it...$200...dinner...massage...and other little gifts from family/friends :)
I got cash. I used it to buy myself a new laptop. (I DESPERATELY needed one.) Also they paid for college and are still helping me out a little bit, so that oughta count for something!
I got cash... and my godfather bought me a really nice diamond solitaire necklace. I'm surprised so many people got tangible presents for graduation! Everyone in my family just gets cash.
@ILikePink:My parents gave me a party and it was really nice. I then got this really rare gift of a JOB and started my career:0) There was no down time, I was offered a job 1 month before graduation!!!
Money! It was pretty much all I wanted at that point to tide me over until I locked in a job. I also got an engraved silver box that I really like from my parents.
I gave FI a watch, which is pretty standard.
A strand of pearls sounds nice! A very classic, traditional gift. Every woman should own a strand of pearls, IMO
@Soladylike: I win! I got my job offer the day before graduation! (I hated graduating in the job slump - I applied for over 100 jobs and got 2 interviews and just one offer. Definitely happy to get a job at all though - many of my peers didn't).
I am super torn between the pearls and the watch. I really like the idea of a charm bracelet, but I think I'd get more use out of the pearls or the watch.
@Nursein10- That ring is gorgeous!
We went out to lunch? We're not a big presents family, I guess. I didn't have a party or invite anybody outside of my immediately family.

Although cash seems like it would be nice, I'd rather have something I can have for a long time. Plus, I have a giant extended family, so I will probably be getting cash from most of them, which seems to be the norm in our family.

I would totally go for the Citizen Eco Drive watch, I want one soo bad!!! We had just moved in to our house the week of finals (I had finished mine early) so I got insulation for the attic and crawl space and a contractor pack of caulk for our house :) It was definitely money well spent!
Oh, and my parents are also going to frame my diploma for me, they had already gotten one before i graduated and we didn't know it would be so ginormous, so we need to get a bigger one
They bought me a new car...I had a budget so I ended up getting a used Xterra, but still it was VERY generous!
I was pregnant with my daughter and my family was so embaressed that they didn't even take me out. My mother acted as though I was the biggest embaressment of all time-getting pregnant out of wedlock.
I like the idea of the pearls.
My mom got my twin sister and I new Movado watches which we wach loved. Law school graduation we got new rolexes and a super plush party. My family has a habit of giving us watches for educational accomplishments-hehe.
The pearls sound like a nice idea if you think you'll use them.
Good luck and congrats on your graduation!
I like the idea of the pearls as well.
My parents gave me a watch, which I wear everyday. It's a nice reminder all the hard work.
My aunt was very generous and gave me some money. I used some of it to buy myself a sterling necklace and earrings. I had a lot of challenges getting through school (anxiety, depression, bad breakup) and took a year off. Deciding to go back and fight through a lot of crap (not to sound cheesy) needed to be honoured in some way. I wear both necklace and earrings often...but mostly to remind myself that I can do anything I put my mind to.
I received money from lots of different relatives. I got some beautiful diamond earrings from my mom. I think
